MLB The Show 17 News Post

As we attempt to wait patiently for March 28 to finally get here so we can dive into MLB The Show 17 ourselves and see how this year’s game measures up, we’ve been treated to the usual series of developer streams in the meantime to whet our appetite ahead of its release. While it may be impossible to gauge the game’s components without actually holding a controller in our hands and feeling how things actually play, that’s not going to stop us from making some snap judgments based on everything that we’ve seen so far. Here are the three best and worst things we’ve noticed in our initial impressions of the highly anticipated release.

You could but I bet Show 17 is the best old baseball game out there. So why not play it, and dont have to hook up another console to do it.

Absolutely.

But you couldn't play an old baseball game with the new ball physics

I don't care if it took them one day or 5 minutes to create the mode. They sat down in their meeting, realized they can't expand the team, so they resorted to creating a new mode for the sake of having something new. Instead of using those days on fixing pitching motions, fixing jerseys, fixing grass, they felt the need to go retro. Lets not forget about shifting priorities towards DD because we all know that is where the money is. Who is to blame them though? I would have done the same thing.
I agree to a point, but at one time they were developing for 2 systems, Vita and Ps4.

Maybe we will get lucky and all of ours asking for things will be patched into the game. Here is hoping. Madden did it last year, so who knows. I miss you 2k.

Best
1. Stadium Tagging - love the idea of commentary saying where the ball lands such as Lansdowne St
2. Situational stats - dynamic batter vs. pitcher stats in Franchise
3. Player Quirks
Honorable mention - Player faces upgraded, ball physics, Top Prospect list, Critical Situations, MLB network integration, Showcast stats

**Maybe Pave the Path will make the list, still waiitng for more info.

Things I dont care about
1. DD navigation upgrades
2. Quick Manage
3. Retro Mode

After going back through all the SCEA streams, they made alot more upgrades than I perceived. This is going to be an awesome release. San Diego Studios on their game as usual.

Good
1. Ball physics
2. Body types
3. Better faces

Bad
1. Cap side logo
2. Cap side logo
3. No Tiger Stadium

Actually, if you consider that with Retro mode (similar to the RBI baseball games released the past couple years) and Quick Manage/sim options (similar to OOTP baseball), the team at SDS is doing a smart thing by appealing to more players, drawing them in (creating more revenue) which can then be used to apply towards more franchise options for future iterations of the game. I find it extremely unlikely that they would highlight an area they do not intend to improve in the coming years. In fact, they have followed this line of thinking before with DD and RTTS.

Of course I would like more franchise based improvements, but I am willing to wait till next year. Besides, there is so much to love with what we have seen in the vids so far. Ball physics and quirks alone are going to enhance franchise mode!

I pretty much agree with your assessment. I'm not so sure that retro mode is a negative..what I will say is I doubt I'll be playing it.

I hate it too. You would think Manfred would have had some input with New Era.
I hope the cap isnt the tip of the iceberg and baseball uniforms dont turn into NASCAR uniforms.
I know thats a huge leap, and probably wont happen, but I also never thought caps would become billboards for New Era. For 25 years New Era has been a fine steward of the game but now I'm afraid their bottom line visually negatively affects MLB's on-field product.
And THAT is on Manfred, AFAIC

I think removing Diamond Dynasty Pitcher Handedness in the matchup screen could turn out to be a good thing and provide some interesting new strategy. As it is now, a lot of cards like Winfield and Schmidt are never being used. This change should also give lefty SPs like Sale, Bumgarner, etc. more value.

How many teams actually really relied on these one-dimensional platoon cards throughout an entire year anyways? One should still be able to use these cards. Just protect them in the lineup. With all of the great diamond cards available, you shouldn't have to rely on too many platoons in your lineup to begin with.

What could possibly be bad about a Retro mode?

To me the ball physics and player models are top of the list of good. Followed by the ease of play for new players bringing in, hopefully a whole lot of new players which can never be bad.

I don't see much that I don't like. I don't play franchise so that doesn't bother me and I'll check out retro for some nostalgia but won't play it much but I'm happy that the team will try every year to bring in new player and new stream of revenue to help make the game better and better.

Can't wait for the game to drop

Best:

1. Ball Physics. After playing '16 since they showed these off, I find myself saying "in '17 those hits will do this, not just stay straight!"

2. Improved Faces and Body Sliders

3. DD Seasons and RTTS PYP

Worst:

1. Retro Mode

2. Little done to Franchise

3. That's all I got

This. I've played a lot of RttS the past couple days and have been thinking the exact same thing. "In 17 that one will probably hook foul." OR "in 17 that one would have more top spin and might fall fall in for a hit."

Worst

1) Retro Mode, waste of time and space that could have been used for other things.
2) Franchise Mode being dumbed down, with veteran players seemingly being taken for granted with very limited change in core mechanics.
3) Increase in Online only stuff in DD.

Worst
1) retro mode- could of put there focus on other modes more
2) franchise mode - not much was added but hopefully things were improved
3) MLB the show seems to be going towards DD more. Even in there Offline franchise stream they seem more excited to show DD Legends then the actual franchise stream.

So what you rather have had them do in the time (less than a day) it took to implement Retro Mode?

Oh no, it's such a distraction and takes away so much from the overall aesthetic of the uniform...

Spoiler

I hope it has the "New Coke" effect driving the demand for the classic look. Fingers crossed The Show doesn't include the logo on the throw back caps.

Spoiler

Just wait until Under Armor puts their logo on the uniform chest in 2020. The Show has to do what MLB does but Manifred has made it clear the MLB is open for bu$$iness. I'm trying to just enjoy the game of baseball, this is such a great time of year, but the signage creep is yucky.

I may be wrong, but I think the game froze in the Twitch stream when they missed the bunt because they turned on some sort of "automatic contact" widget, yet they missed.

Maybe it was something else, I don't know.
