MLB The Show 17 News Post

As we attempt to wait patiently for March 28 to finally get here so we can dive into MLB The Show 17 ourselves and see how this year’s game measures up, we’ve been treated to the usual series of developer streams in the meantime to whet our appetite ahead of its release. While it may be impossible to gauge the game’s components without actually holding a controller in our hands and feeling how things actually play, that’s not going to stop us from making some snap judgments based on everything that we’ve seen so far. Here are the three best and worst things we’ve noticed in our initial impressions of the highly anticipated release.

Retro mode is very niche. I wish the Owner Mode-like features stripped out after MLB 12 would make a return. Madden, NBA 2K, and NHL all added the feature in during that span. Even FIFA tracks jersey and ticket sales now.

Im interested in retro even though Im not the biggest minigames fan when it comes to sports titles, but considering how much Ken Griffey Jr is involved in that and how much I adored Ken Griffey Jr Baseball 64 there's no way I'm not giving this mode a chance. I'd like to see fantasy baseball in on season modes too, that would be an acceptable mini game to add someday.

I respect them for not bringing in cheesy owner mode features though, they mentioned it before that when it does come back someday it will be fully featured or much closer to it than before.

I see Retro Mode as a "Couch Co-Op" mode with your buddies. Without all of the intricacies of playing the full game. Good way to just relax and hit some dingers against your friends.

Matty V not updated

I've got to question Harold Reynolds being one of the 3 best, of course you are entitled to your opinion. In my opinion he's one the 3 worst. I'm excited for the MLB Network, and with that network tie in SDS had access to one of the great commentators of our day, who is very knowledgeable about the game of baseball and very funny, John Smoltz, everything Harold Reynolds is not.

That is true. I would've been in seventh heaven had they updated Matty V, added John Smoltz, and dropped the 3 man booth altogether.

I agree with the DD backing out issue . It is my biggest gripe with DD , having people back out should result in a loss for them , I don't necessarily need a W, but that person deserves a loss for backing out.

Best -

1) Improved Ball Physics

2) Humanity AI (improved infield defense, specifically)

3) Player Quirks (if done right)

Worst-

1) Franchise mode clearly antithetical. Focus on buzzwords like "quicker" and "easier" set off alarms.

2) Diamond Dynasty further cementing itself as the focus of SCEA

3) Player Quirks (if done wrong)

Best
1) Ball Physics
2) Humanity AI
3a) More equipment brands
3b) Ball Physics

Worst
1) Franchise updates not touching actual franchise logic
2) Still 18+ days until the game is playable
3) uh, I dunno... haven't seen SunTrust Park yet...?

Retro mode gotta be great i spend 20 bucs on the R.B.I garbage game this new feature its like we own 2 games in one, will be more easer to many peoples out there to play the game cause this game is not for everyone to much reality on it you need to know how 2 pitch on online mode even on the season you need to know how to pitch Legend mode its not a joke 😂😂😂🤣🤣 they just need to make the stubbs stuff little more accessible, other thin i hope they fix are the issues wiith the foul balls near the benches they use to vacum the ball for an out, other thin the half check swings hit and hommers 😂😂🤣🤣 i hit a few, another good add will be if they could make a louder first base coach yelling for the pitcher pick off attemp, and last we ask for the player collision gotta be great see the outfield on base runners colissions aswell

Best

1) Ball Physics
2) Ball Physics
3) Ball Physics

Worst

1) Retro Mode, waste of time and space that could have been used for other things.
2) Franchise Mode being dumbed down, with veteran players seemingly being taken for granted with very limited change in core mechanics.
3) Increase in Online only stuff in DD.

# 12 rkocjay @ 03/10/17 10:16 AM
Best

1) Ball physics any addition of improved ball physics is great for any sports game
2) MLB network presentation
3) commentary

Worst
1) retro mode- could of put there focus on other modes more
2) franchise mode - not much was added but hopefully things were improved
3) MLB the show seems to be going towards DD more. Even in there Offline franchise stream they seem more excited to show DD Legends then the actual franchise stream.

Best

1) Ball Physics
2) Humanity AI/Player Quirks
3) Retro Mode - I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea but I'm really looking forward to playing in a "league" with my buddies like we did back in yesteryear.

Worst

1) Things I was hoping were added to franchise mode weren't added this year
2) Having to wait until the end of March to play
3) The Cubs are probably going to crush me........again.

I think many of you are missing a key component to Retro Mode. As a father of a 6 year old son that LOVES baseball, it is difficult to play The Show while he watches wishing he could grab a controller and play. In this years version he can do just that with Retro Mode. One button does everything just like when we were kids. Will he be able to play franchise? No but he has no interest in that. He just wants to play as his favorite players and teams and have fun. Retro mode was not built for the hardcore players but I know I am looking forward to sharing my passion for this game with my son!

Great, great point. Even my 10 year old has a tough time with all the mechanics. This is going to be great for us too.

I love the idea of Retro Mode. I'm hardcore into sports simulation just like most of us here are. But I do have friends and my girlfriend, who don't want to invest the time and effort a regular game of the Show offers. Me and my best buddy (even to this day) will spend many hours into the night playing Griffey Slugfest on N64. This allows us to do so - with far better graphics and physics this time around.

And I am in the extreme minority in liking Harold Reynolds. Super pumped to be playing '17 every day very soon.

I'm extremely excited for retro mode. More action, much less frustrating missing those low curves and change ups. And we can knock out a game in half the time.

I'm just really hoping we can have a broadcast style game, but with retro cam and gameplay. Something about that retro cam brings out the graphics imo.

3 things I like
Quick manage
New graphics
new launchpad

3 things I don't
Retro mode
DD
No Scouting changes.

Couldn't we just play an old baseball game if we wanted retro mode? I don't understand the appeal, I remember when madden did this. It lasted one year.
