NBA 2K17 will feature league expansion for MyGM and MyLEAGUE modes. Check out the details in the new blog from Erick Boenisch, AKA SimBaller.

For anyone who has read my blogs in the past, you know that I am serious about MyGM and MyLEAGUE. I'm blessed to work with a core group of people who share the exact same level of passion. We've done a LOT of work to these modes this year, and one feature I can't stop talking about is...League Expansion. This is entirely new to NBA 2K17, and is the feature I want to tell you about today.
Please spare me. I'm an online ranked match player !! LOL>
Start Today is not replacing NBA Today. It's an option that allows you to start your my gm or my league at whatever point the nba season is at when you start the mode with all the up to date stats, standings, transactions etc.
I'm a traditionalist, so I don't know if I'll ever use the Expansion feature or not. It sounds great for guys who like to mix stuff up though. My one request is that they would allow us add alternate uniforms for teams without moving them.
I am super pumped about Start Today. I've been requesting this for years, so I'm glad it finally made it back it. It's going to be great to jump in playoff races and play them out myself. The only question I have is is it like a Season mode where you only get to finish out that one season or can you continue playing like it's a MyLeague?
From my understanding, NBA Today is a Play Now mode featuring all the games being played on that day. Start today is a mode in MyGM/MyLeague where you can start start playing at any point during the current real life season and all the stats, roster moves etc. will be present in the the game. The difference is one is just a Play Now mode and the other is for people who enjoy doing full seasons.
This is the only feature I've ever wanted in video games for years. I can't tell you how excited this news is for me, personally. It's the only news I needed to hear, everything else after this is just gravy (and I'm sure it will also be awesome).
I'm not a franchise mode player, but I'm excited for you guys. Could you explain what "Start Today" does for the mode?
Ok.
Lets say that you are waiting for a certain roster to be complete or your MyLeague and GM Mode is what you wanted it to be. You can start a new file from scratch and (hopefully) use a custom roster that is up to date and all of the stats, standings etc., will reflect what is happening in real life.
I forgot the last game it was in but it was great to start the Association mode right before the Allstar break, trade deadline or right before the playoffs. That way draft chances are the same in real life and you don't have to go through all the hell to recreate standings. Would have be great to have it in this year with GS going for the record.
They gave it back at the right time though. The next free agency is going to crazy.
Sorry I'm not sure i understand. So we can have 36 teams in franchise mode, but isn't realistic to the NBA? I know it's an "option" and people love options, but aren't we trying to get more sim?
You can go as "sim" as you want in your personal MyLeague.
I'm going to make mine full of 36 random old school teams and battle it out.
So glad start today is back. Hopefully it works with custom rosters...
Do you mean editing the roster after you start a play now league. I hope possible? I don't think you will be able to load your own roster and then start from there sounds like a conflict there.
I think it will be just stats, injuries, standings, ratings. So basically play now rosters from the day you start, ratings with real standings, stats. I think you should be able to edit the roster after that at least I hope so.

By the sounds of it your MyGM could expand without your input, dynamically on it's own. Also, the NBA could very well have 32-34 teams 10 years from now.
This news made 2k17 a day 1 buy for me, was going to GF it but now I know I'm buying. Now if they add the D-League, I'll be in heaven. Between, Madden 17, COD 4, 2k17, and BF1, I have no idea how I'm going to fit all those in.
So question, if you create an additional 6 teams for 36 total teams, does the game create all those fake players? So you end up with a bunch of generated players in the franchise?
Personally, I kinda would rather have just 30 teams because that's more realistic to the NBA.
Well honestly i hope in 2060 the nba has more than 30 teams in "real life" because that year happens in 2k sometimes.
Curious about the part where they said you can start a customized league with realigned divisions, expansion teams, classic teams, edited/rebranded teams, Euroleague teams, and more.
My question is what teams are included in the more part, they seemed to cover everything in what they listed unless they are talking about college teams or possible Olympic World league teams.

This should be implemented, I would love that. Same for created teams to as well as current teams. Can't be stuck with 2 jerseys and for some NBA teams who just have 3 or 4.
