NBA 2K17 News Post

The following article is a guest post from Jeremy Hartman. If you are ever interested in doing a guest post or series of posts, let us know with an e-mail.

Every year when the latest iteration of NBA 2K is released, I race home to crack the game open and begin hatching my master plan to make the virtual NBA Hall of Fame. I head directly to MyPlayer mode and decide if my created point guard will be a 6-foot-1 Kevin Johnson clone or the next coming of Penny Hardaway at 6-foot-7.

I really don’t even bother with the other modes. I’m strictly a MyPlayer junkie. The amount of hours I spend in this mode borders on the insane. With that being said, the mode can oftentimes become a grind. The initial story wears off, and you really just continue trying to play games in order to gain new badges or attributes. However, I believe there are some simple ways to make the mode more engaging, and even more realistic. Here are a few ideas that could bring virtual NBA life more in line with reality.

Attributes: No buckets

During creation pick a number of attributes where eventually you want to be "elite". Meaning up to 94, possibility to get to 99 during practice and offseason, 95 to 99 won't cost vc as they are a practice reward. However if you stop doing the drills to do connections/endorsements or simply other drills it will drop back to 94.

Random amount coming, let's say you get 5 selections for "elite" attributes. Then another 5 "very good" (up to 85), then 10 "good" (up to 76). Next 10 "decent" (up to 68). The rest up to 59. Certain attributes will be position based, meaning if you take an attribute that's uncommon for the position it will have an extra cost. So for example, if you have a center and select ball handling or 3pt shooting it will cost 2 selections for "decent", 3 for "good", 4 for "very good" and 5 for "elite" selections each in stead of just one like it would for a typical center attribute such as post hook or block.

So, to be clear since my explanation might be confusing, if you're a center and want to select standing 3pt shot as an elite skill you spend all your 5 "elite" selections on it, meaning that you can't pick another "elite" attribute. If you want to have it at "very good" you spend 4 meaning you can have 1 more "elite" attribute but it will have to be either a positionless attribute (such as stamina or hustle) or a center attribute as mentioned before.

Also, some physical attributes would be dependent on height/weight in stead of height/position. Weight would be tied to body type of course. So, for example, elite speed for a 7'3 center wouldn't be 94 but more like 75 if he weighs 220 and 65 if he weighs 330. I hope you get the idea. Obviously the speed mechanic would have to work properly.

- Badges

First of all, for mycareer, badges shouldn't stay forever. It should reflect how you play. If you start playing differently, your badges change. On that note, i'd like the same for attributes, maybe make it so that you get the option in the offseason to change your weaknesses and strengths.

For example for stat based badges, use "season/career average" stats instead of "season/career totals". Random example: limitless range --> 1 per game = bronze, 2 = silver, 3 = gold. Or if they want to keep using totals, have a negative counter: let's use limitless range again as an example --> make + good shot selection = +1.5, regular make = +1, make + bad SS OR miss + good SS = +0.5, regular miss = 0, miss + bad SS = -1 (unless it's with 2 or less seconds left on the shot clock then it's just 0). Half/full court shots don't factor into limitless range.

Also, i agree with the idea of making badges more exclusive. Have the aforementioned negative counter and dynamic aspect. On top of that make badges unobtainable for difficulty levels below allstar as well as the "casual" slider set. Or make it so that badges obtained at those levels are unavailable online.

- "Box out (king)": If you box out on 75-80% (or so) of the opposing teams shots while you're on the court. Obviously you'll get a higher success rate in box out battles. Of course still keeping the related attributes in consideration, like boxout, strength, hustle, and whatever else is used.

- A badge like lockdown defender should be based on performance in my opinion instead of your attributes, keeping your opponent below his season average while keeping minutes played into consideration. Same with bruiser for example, not just be 200+ pounds but based on how you body up the opponent combined with the strength rating. 60-74 strength = max bronze, 75-89 = max silver, 90-99 = max gold.

- a "bruce bowen" badge: you can get away with a foul here and there. You'll need the "lockdown defender" badge as well as 90+ on ball defensive iq and defensive consistency.

- a badge for fronting in the post and one to keep your opponent from getting position in the paint. Dennis rodman was very good at that despite his "smaller" size, so it shouldn't completely be about strength, maybe a "low post defense positioning" attribute. And then of course a counterpart for both on offense.

- add a "verticality" badge for... well, verticality blocks and keep "eraser" for regular blocks.

- I agree with the mentioned putback as well as catch and shoot.

Also, we need some negative badges like:

- "turnover prone" and "foul prone", self explanatory.
- "chucker": it takes less misses to get cold. You get it by averaging x amount of "bad shot selection". Add an "assist wizard" badge that gives you a slightly higher succes rate on passes in traffic as an extra incentive. You won't be able to get the latter while having "chucker" or "ballhog". "Ballhog" would lead to an increase in help defense iq for the opposing team. You get it by dominating the ball over 65% (or so) of the total team possession timer.
- etc... can't really think of any other right now

Play for our country come summer time in MyCAREER would be dope.

I got 2k10-2k15 (didn't get 16 because 15 MP story mode was stupid and didn't want to do the spike lee junk) and all I play is MP mode. I tell you what, if you do not get this game on PC and you a big MP like me (100% playing that mode) than it's a waste. The main reason is you can lock in sliders with different mod engines so you can have realistic games. Instead of dropping 80 points because your teammates jack up bricks all the time, with locked in sliders you can actually pass to them and they actually shoot a good %. Like with my sliders teams shoot like the real nba.

Also something new I did in 2k15 was instead of jacking my MP shooting stats to 95, I stop at 80 so I could raise the game sliders so my teammates will shoot realistically and I do not have to go superman and score every point down the floor. Ever since I did that the game has played awesome for me. Just lost a 7 game series against Houston, I'm the suns. It was fun the whole way through, very realistic. Harden and I were going back and forth the whole series.

I do want to get it on xbox 1 to play on my 80inch tv but there is no point because you can't adjust sliders in that mode (unless they changed in 2k16). I get why they don't because of my park or whatever, but some of us could careless about that. Maybe make it so we can play offline and be able to adjust sliders only offline.

-Have free agency be more of a career path selection and have it affect your legacy

Create a big 3? Discussions with the GM will tell what 2 players you will be joining
Pros: Great team mates and great coaches
Cons: Multiple championships expected, people questioning who was mainly responsible for those titles and individual accolades (MVP's etc) harder to get, things like allstar appearances and deep playoff runs are meaningless, championship or bust!

Loyal hometown hero?
Pros: Lower exceptions so deep playoff runs, MVP's, All-star appearances help toward building your legacy, 1 NBA title in this role might be enough to solidify you as a all-time great
Cons: Chances of getting good team mates and coaches are low and if by some chance you get one or two they'll only stay for a year or 2

Money Grab?
AKA playing for a big market team on a max deal.
Pros: More VC per game, more endorsements, other player taking pay-cuts to play there because it's a big market (not because of you)
Cons: Less cap room for the team to build around you, perceived as selfish by majority of the league and choosing "$ > Rings" will have a very negative affect on your legacy if you can't win multiple.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hopping between the paths is possible but has negative affects on your legacy...

Won multiple title as part of a "BIG 3" but couldn't get it done when you "went home"? The critics will say you couldn't get it done without players X and Y and if players X and Y continue to win titles without you...Your whole career and importance during those championship years will be called into question.

Thought you were the hometown hero but then went for the money grab? You will be booed out of the building every time you return to that arena and the sports reporters from that area will bury you every chance they get.

Went for the money grab first but then "went home"? Again you will be booed out of the arena you previously played in and the media in that area will bury you.

At the end of all this there should be a top 50 all-time NBA players ranking with the MyPlayer ranked depending on the above paths he chose and what he accomplished.

Add the ability to edit sliders and custom rosters for offline MyPlayer users. Make our MyPark player experience separate from our set MyPlayer to avoid the need for capping players attributes and balancing that mode.

I agree with all things you mentioned also being back GM interactions and expand on it by having meetings with the coaching staff

Make improving your MyPlayer tied strictly to completing drills and in-game achievements. VC should only be used for improving your player in MyPark. Users shouldn't be able to buy their way into being a highly rated rookie or second year player.

# 30 GuwopGeezus @ 06/06/16 12:46 PM
Make the playbook like 2k14 or whatever year it was where the coach actually ran several different plays and would run plays for you (or a teammate) if you (or your teammate) got hot. Also, different coaches would run different plays. Tired of running the same sets over and over.

# 31 Mongo14 @ 06/06/16 02:12 PM
Need more presence in the off-season. Not a lot of free agent moves, no training or more time to work on endorsements and connections. If you're the team's star, maybe let you influence the team's free agency like it let us in past titles.

Make it feel like I'm part of THE TEAM.
I feel alone in MyPlayer. Its like I play my game and I'm right back in my gym alone. Why not have teammates challenge you to 1on1 to build chemistry? Or they randomly come up to you and fool with you during practice(stealing the ball, goal-tending your shot, contesting your dunk, etc.). Another idea after (or before) a big game the coach/GM wants to meet with you(MyGM style) and you are now on the receiving end of criticism or praise that is dealt out.

Ideas from shoe brands
I know you can create and edit shoes, but it would be nice for the company to come to you with a shoe idea and you have final say to green light it or not. Having customizeable shirts/pants/etc with brand affiliation would be nice too

Allow us to play Overseas/Olympics/Summer League/D-League
2k has enough international teams for our MyPlayer to be sent overseas and play among the "international league". Same with Summer League(its possible). When it comes to the Olympics & D-League if its implemented in 2k17 we should be able to play there as well.

Make us sweat bullets during the Draft & Free Agency
The two most interesting things in the NBA is the draft & free agency. Make it huge when it comes to MyPlayer. Entering the league we should be put through the gauntlet(draft combine, interviews, private workouts, etc.) and have teams making us draft promises, with others saying they are willing to trade up for us, and some just leaving us to wonder.
Same when it comes to free agency. We should go on the usual tour like real NBA free agents with teams making us all kinds of promises(GM input, who we would want to stay and go, other free agents they can get if I sign, endorsements deals, team rebranding input, coach hiring input, drafting input, etc.)

Unexpected Trades
If we have bad chemistry with star teammate, coach/GM, or we are under performing, or a number of negative things our MyPlayer has caused to the team could result in us being trades unexpectedly and suddenly. [Poop] happens and if we want the real-feel of the NBA then if things ain't going right we could find our MyPlayer traded without any warning.

Allow us to pick our agent
Before entering the NBA we should be presented with a list of agents that are interested in us, but all agents aren't created equal. Similar to hiring your staff in MyGM/MyLeague each agent will have specific grades in categories. The three categories can be; Endorsement Deals (A grade means you're more likely get endorsements quicker than usual), Contract Negotiation (A grade means your agent will search for the best deal for you), and finally Priority (IMO the most important of the 3). This will determine how important you are to this agent based on your overall and his other clients. An "A" grade means you are top priority for this agent, but if its D/F he has bigger players to worry about). Another that can be added is badges (just like hiring staff). One agent may be a sneaker-head which means he will try to get you a nice shoe deal, another agent may be a money-maker and will constantly present you with endorsement deals. Some negative badges could be "hot head" which could result in certain teams or endorsers being turned off just by your agent. Another agent could be a "ticking time bomb" which means he wants to see constant improvement from you or he's done being your agent.

I have been begging for this ever since 2K10, and probably the main reason why I rarely play this mode...

Please allow the option to shorten the season, similarly to MyLeague. I.e., 14, 29, 64, 82 games.

I'm a fan of playing realistic sim ball, and that means the full 12 minute quarters, but the grind is just way too long. How many of us make it past the two seasons without simulating games?

The more customization, the better!

Tske off the attribute caps and have it like nba 2k11 it gives my players more variety im tired of seeing the same position of PG OR C they killed the SF and PF position bring it back!

What My Career is missing more than anything is INDIVIDUALITY!!! Forget the storyline. Forget the plays. Forget FA in the offseason (Even though those would be some really nice additions too). But the individuality aspect of the game is gone. And I believe that's more important than any other flaw with this once great game mode. Thanks to the illogical caps 2k brought out this year, there is essentially no use for the SG, SF, or PF positions. The way to make a great SG/SF is to make a tall PG. The way to make a great PF is to make a shorter C. When you play pro am or park there are always the same type of 3-4 players running around. An extremely short 5'5 PG who cheeses his speed and high jump shot ability because by 2k logic, the shorter you are, the faster you are and the shorter you are, the better shooter you are. Which truly makes no sense. You also see7'3 C. Literally the only height that makes sense to have if you make a C. You just have to worry about if it's an outside or an inside. Then there's the stretch "4" which is really a 6'10 SF. And you may get a normal non cheese player every now and then. I say all that to say there is no uniqueness to the mode at all.

# 38 Rain723 @ 06/09/16 03:00 PM
To add on to my previous post, I've come up with ways where 2k can bring back the individuality of the game. There needs to be ways to truly make your My Player unique.

1. First of all get rid of that STUPID BUCKET ATTRIBUTE UPGRADE SYSTEM!!!! Seriously I hate to be rude but that is the dumbest idea ever and whoever came up with it should be fired immediately. Why should I have to improve my post fadeaway just because I want to improve my layup? And why should I have to improve my 3 point shot just to be able to make FT's as a big man? Yeah just get rid of that.

2. When starting My Career mode, the very first creation menu should be where you choose your name, nickname, hometown, position, height, weight, and BODY TYPE. Body types should include slim (KD), athletic (basically the standard type we have now), muscular (Lebron), Stocky (Shaq), and even fat. Each body type should have its own pros and cons.

3. The next screen is where we get creative. You should be able to choose 3 key offensive weapons or strengths. Not to say you won't be good in other areas but these are your bread and butter. These could be elite passer, elite ball handler, athlete, post specialist, 3 point marksman, mid range sniper, etc. Amd you should be able to choose 2 defensive disciplines. So maybe lockdown defender who's good at staying with his man and sliding his feet, quick hands pick pocket type player, interceptor who plays the passing lane well, post defender, shot blocker, etc. Again each of these creates different caps in addition to your position, height, weight, body type.

4. This is the final creation menu. The last thing you do is pick a player comparison. Based on all the things you input previously, you will be provided with a few players from the past and present to choose to somewhat model your game after and that will be who you're compared to from time to time. Again you won't be exactly like that player, it's just a close comparison and also has effects on your caps and abilities.

So that makes the possibilities almost endless as far as uniqueness and individuality. You won't have the same type of players with the same strengths and weaknesses. Each My Player will truly be different in his own way. And it will also force players to pick all types of different positions. That way you won't have 90% of players picking a 7'3 C or a 5'5 PG.
