Some Ideas To Make MyPlayer Better...

The following article is a guest post from Jeremy Hartman. If you are ever interested in doing a guest post or series of posts, let us know with an e-mail.

Every year when the latest iteration of NBA 2K is released, I race home to crack the game open and begin hatching my master plan to make the virtual NBA Hall of Fame. I head directly to MyPlayer mode and decide if my created point guard will be a 6-foot-1 Kevin Johnson clone or the next coming of Penny Hardaway at 6-foot-7.

I really don’t even bother with the other modes. I’m strictly a MyPlayer junkie. The amount of hours I spend in this mode borders on the insane. With that being said, the mode can oftentimes become a grind. The initial story wears off, and you really just continue trying to play games in order to gain new badges or attributes. However, I believe there are some simple ways to make the mode more engaging, and even more realistic. Here are a few ideas that could bring virtual NBA life more in line with reality.

Where I’m From – I enjoyed the Spike Lee twist to MyPlayer this year, but I’m not really from New York and feel like that took a bit of the personal aspect out of the mode for me. I’m a kid from rural West Virginia; the New York tagline didn’t really suit me. I’m sure folks from legendary basketball states like Indiana wanted to live out their dreams as well. Allow me to pick my town and state again, and let me create my own high school much like NCAA Football used to do in the Road To Glory mode. There can be generic versions of uniforms we could easily edit with colors and font, and you could even have the player participate in a respective state playoffs before choosing a college.

Speaking of Higher Learning – The college recruiting pitches were a welcomed addition to MyPlayer this year. They should be kept in the game and more schools should be added. I realize there are some potential legal hurdles with adding schools, but it’s worth the old college try. Also, allow me to stay in school another year if I so choose. In this year’s version, I thought I would have to make a decision whether to stay or go after my freshman year. Imagine the surprise when the cutscene ended and I was in the draft! Take advantage of the new rules allowing me to declare for the draft and get feedback on where I could potentially be drafted based on interviews and my performance at the Draft Combine. This could help me decide if I want to stay in the draft or head back to school to improve my stock.

"The college recruiting pitches were a welcomed addition to MyPlayer this year. They should be kept in the game and more schools should be added."

Draft Combine – As of now, there is no true way to know where your MyPlayer will end up during the draft. I tried multiple times to get drafted by a different team this past year but still ended up in Charlotte. Add the NBA Draft Combine and let me participate in the drills and mock interviews. The drills could be simple to implement as many of them are already in the MyPlayer practice mode. Interviews with general managers was in previous versions of the game, so those could also be put back in play. At the end of the combine, provide my player with feedback on where he could potentially be drafted at and let me decide what I want to do. If I feel really confident in my potential as a top draft pick, let me choose to skip the combine altogether and test fate.

Is It The Shoes? – If you’re a die-hard MyPlayer person, you’ve inevitably spent time deciding which shoe company to support and which shoes to wear. You’ve also likely created multiple custom pairs of shoes to match your team’s uniforms. Unfortunately, if you are a Nike fan, you’ve had to spend hard-earned VC to buy the shoes as there appears to be no Nike shoe deal in the game this year. Custom shoes carry a hefty 3,500 VC price tag. Shoe deals for multiple companies should be brought back to the game -- with a slight adjustment. Top draft picks often sign shoe deals before they even play an NBA game. This should be represented in the game as well. If I am going to be a lottery pick in the upcoming MyPlayer draft, why not have shoe companies fawning over me and trying to get me to sign with them? Add some cutscenes with reps from various shoe companies making their pitch to me and let me decide which option I like best. This opens up a plethora of possibilities as the shoe contracts could be incentive-based and only last for a certain number of years. When a player’s shoe deal is about to expire, have rival shoe companies make a pitch to get you to jump ship. This happens with all of the stars, so it should happen in MyPlayer as well.

"If I am going to be a lottery pick in the upcoming MyPlayer draft, why not have shoe companies fawning over me and trying to get me to sign with them?"

Summer, Summer Time – After players get drafted, many times we go right into season play. Why not take advantage of the NBA’s summer season and allow us to participate in one of the NBA’s Summer Leagues against other rookies and potential free agents? The games do not have to be long -- potentially three-minute quarters. It adds another level of realism to the game, and it could be another way for the franchise that drafted you to provide feedback on your role for the upcoming season. This could even be taken a step further with NBA Preseason games. I do believe there should be an option to simulate these games if the player wanted to, but the possibility of an attribute upgrade would make them worth playing.

Gold Medal Dreams – Many current NBA players have hopes of representing their countries in the Olympics. Make this available in MyPlayer as well. With the recent screenshot release of Paul George in his Olympic uniform, this could be a possibility in 2K17. Add the option of having the Olympics every four years during your MyPlayer career as the FIFA series did with the World Cup. This would add another goal for players to shoot for in hopes of wearing their country’s respective colors.

Tweet & Retweet – Social media is big business these days. NBA players are having their tweets re-posted on ESPN when amazing feats happen during the playoffs. I would like to see the feature be brought back to MyPlayer. Give me the opportunity to tweet out marketing campaigns again. Allow me to tweet other stars to see if they want to team up to form a Big 3 in LA. And of course, who could forget the ability to talk serious smack to another player or just have some fun via Twitter.

This is by no means a comprehensive list of features that could be added. Many of the features currently in the mode, such as connections and other endorsements, should continue to play a vital role in the game. What features would you like to see added to provide more depth and realism to the mode?

1. Bring back the Combine drills and scrimmages at the Attack Athletics center.
2. Summer League of course (it shouldn't have came out in the first place)
3. BRING BACK THE D-LEAGUE!!!!
4. The option to play overseas in the Euroleague if not drafted or want to try those options
5. Dead the spike lee story line imo it's corny and took away the feeling of having a unique experience

I want an actual off season, most players work on their game and get better in the off season. Also give us an actual free agency period. I want to see where other players are signing before I make my decision or maybe give me some options to talk to other players to sign with my team.

Imagine an online mode for draft combine with drills and such and a summer league for those who don't want to grind in mycareer. Then if you want to continue to the NBA you decide to become available for the draft and the game "copies" your player with the overall and badges you earned previously and trasnfers it to the offline mode.

When people say "add more college teams or add more Historic teams" Do they not realize that doing so isnt that easy?

# 8 AsianPowwwa @ 06/03/16 02:45 PM
This ain't probably going to happen, but please lord almighty get rid of the bucket attribute system.

# 9 Retropyro @ 06/03/16 03:03 PM
1. Don't use Spike Lee again
2. Separate My Career the single player experience from My Player.
3. Allow My Career to be carried over to game iterations.

I'd like for the connections to be more useful. I feel like, once these certain players and legends become my biggest connections, I should be able to interact with them like working out over the summer with KD, LeBron, or Kahwi; possibly earning attributes and secret moves you could use only if you unlock it,

Also, we need a return of GM sitdowns. I need to be able to tell the GM who I think we should keep, suggest who gets traded and who we should attempt to get in return.

We also need more than one generic arena for future All-Star Games. The one they currently use is very stale. Fix the Rising Stars Challenge to be an exact replication of the real thing.

Bring injuries back. Last time I've seen my MyPlayer get injured was 2K11.

NBA 2K17 my career wish list
1) start from high school 3 games
2) select which college you will play ball at
*12-15 choices*
3) play 5 games in college
(Or have it so you can stay 1 more season for higher draft stock) maximum 2 seasons
4) Declare for NBA draft
5) Have option to participate in draft combine or Work out for teams that need you to fill that position void (ex. You're a SG so Memphis, LA and Philly would choose you to work out with them)
6) speak with GM's of teams who are interested in you depending on your draft stock ex. If you're projected to go top 5 . A couple of those teams would talk to you. Same goes for lottery and late rounder(this was a feature that was in previous 2k my careers)
7) your starting overall depends on where you get drafted (max 75 overall)
8) after the draft have the choice to play 3-5 games summer league ,
9) if you skip summer league, by default you start the season coming off the bench
10) depending on how well you do or how many games you play in summer league would determine how many minutes you will get or if you're going to start game 1 of the regular season
11) realistic "NBA" CUTSCENES CUTSCENES CUTSCENES.
12) more energy and atmosphere for big games ex. Rivalry, playoffs and finals should all have different feels
13) more press conferences and possibly pre game interviews or post game locker room interviews
14) try to add more media involvement when it comes to big games ex. Rivalry , playoff, finals and playing for an old team after being traded
15)Your first 20 games YOU CANT go over an 80 overall (attempt to prevent a little bit of cheesing)

My perspective is heavily influenced by Pro-Am play, but here is my list:

Gameplay Related:
  1. Get rid of badge grinding that takes away from immersive gameplay. Idc what you replace it with, but why should I be forced to take a ton of terrible shots to get deadeye? Seriously, the gameplan is to lower difficulty then in game drive to free throw line, post, pump fake and take terrible shot over and over and over again and the coach seems okay with this, no one criticizes you. So immersive. haha smh Many of the others are similarly bad. Make it a practice thing at least for the ridiculous ones or something. Also, give us a progress bar if applicable.
  2. Lower magnetic effect in paint. Why should people need to call timeouts to avoid 3-seconds because of magnetic effect? Happens a lot in Pro-Am.
  3. More robust playbook options in single player and Pro-Am.
  4. I understand it goes against story, but let me edit my team's playbook.
  5. Let me create my own Pro-Am playbook.

Player Creation Related:
  1. Position-less player caps. I understand novices want to lean on positions like a crutch, but the reality is the variance in caps encourages playing out of position, I have three examples:
    • The standard for building the best SGs and SFs is to make tall PGs.
    • The standard for the best PFs is build 7'3" Cs or tall SF.
    • To make a true stretch big you need to make a 6'9" or 6'10" SF, except you'll go through NBA as the painfully athletically handicapped SF rather than using you at PF like every NBA team would.
My ideal situation is you create a player without position and "Likely position" shows up.
  2. Stretch bigs have been around a long time, why are bigs capped at 75 3pt?
  3. The incentive for making a smaller center isn't good enough to justify making anything below 7'2".
  4. The bucket system is a little silly. I understand it's probably there to prevent min-maxing, but there are ways to get around that, such as making requirements for raising attributes dependent on other attributes, such as Must have 70 FT to raise STD 3PT above 85.

Professional Story Related:
  1. If we're keeping the Spike Lee story, which is fine by me, then make it optional. Having made 5+ players for Pro-Am purposes, it gets old really fast.
  2. Bring back draft interviews and let me skip workouts for teams I don't want to play for.
  3. Bring back the GM asking "Which free agents are you interested in playing with here?" It's unrealistic unless your player is LeBron level, but it's a video game and it's fun to play with players you like.
  4. More should happen. Remember that DeAndre Jordan craziness? Incorporate stuff like that!
  5. Let me play in Euroleague and skip college! Or let me decide to go to the Euroleague to chase money if I'm an end of the bench NBA player.
  6. Bring Summer League back.
  7. Bring D-League back.

"15)Your first 20 games YOU CANT go over an 80 overall (attempt to prevent a little bit of cheesing)"

This is why I want separation between My Career and My Player. If I want to have an ungodly straight out of high-school legend who can dominate from the start, why can't I?

The player I take online and the one I use for a single player experience should not have to be tied together.

get rid of the "grouped" attribute upgrades and let us control individual attributes. I'm damn tired of having to become good at three pointers and free throws at the same time

No, thanks. Online players have enough. Live us some offline modes

Shot bases (Why was this even removed in the first place?), Summer League, D-League, Draft Combine, Interviews, mock drafts, editing playbooks, editing your play priorities (Again, why was this removed?), bring back play styles to allow us to create the players we want, get rid of the bucket system.

Can we have defensive settings with logic so I can sag off a guy that cant shoot without being penalised? Also so I can see what my stupid teammates are supposed to be doing. My teammates need to stop standing and watching their man shoot instead of contesting the shots.
Let our star teammates play like themselves. I didn't go and join LeBron so he can become exclusively a spot up shooter.

GM sitdowns need to return as well. The AI doesn't know how to build a team so let me give my input on trades, signings and coaching.

This is a BIG one...Let me see the projected roster before I sign with a team. I went to join Lillard and LeBron in Portland but ended up on a roster with only CPU generated players.

MyCareer used to be my favourite. I haven't played it on months. It's been steadily declining these past couple years.

Jump Shot Creator. Similar to custom shoes, let us create a custom jump shot for our players!

Agree about grouped attributes. Notice how myplayers have less attributes than regular players such as foul creation. Why not give us all the tools?

- Put draft combine back in the game and add in workout invitations from teams that are interested in drafting you. Then for the latter you can choose to do poorly or simply decline if you don't want to join them.

- Give VC during high school, college, (hopefully) summer league. It makes no sense you can't improve your player during all that.

- Put in euroleague and olympics if possible; and bring back d-league. Then, after HS, give us the choice between college, d-league and overseas.

- Possibility to get drafted anywhere from number 1 overall to undrafted.

- Storymode back to cutscenes where you have to make choices. Just have more of them. Ability to create a rivalry with another young (high rated) player.

- Ability to save faces and have different looking mycareer players.

- Allow us to choose two positions, attribute caps will be and stay based on your original primary position but you will be able switch them as you see fit. In order to negate some of the dumb gm/coach decisions.

- Talk to coach about playing time, role, preferred position (out the two you chose), less/more mins for teammate, and maybe some other things. Talk to gm about roster (select teammate you don't like or someone on another team/free agency/dleague/overseas that you want; propose trade when you're let's say 3-4 years on the team as the star) and coach. The higher you're overall rating, popularity, amount of awards and production the more they listen. If all those things are low you might get traded or cut.

- Drills that make sense for position/playstyle.

- Better rewards for endorsements (more vc, commercials, items) and connections (like someone mentioned, offseason drills to unlock and receive their animations).

- Ability to connect with any player in any of the leagues. Your team: improve chemistry and/or push one teammate to work hard and develop/improve; ask teammate to shoot more/less. Rest of nba: create a rivalry or befriend someone in order to get them to join your team when possible. D-league/overseas: again, increase the chance of them making their way to your team.

- Pick any existing bodytype.

- Attributes and badges, see posts below.

- Post whistle plays: shot/dunk/layup after buzzer/foul/etc. Increase popularity but risk getting a technical (except after the final whistle). The higher your overall/etc the less you risk a T.

- Also a taunt/trashtalk button now that i think about it. With "elite" (see attributes spoiler) emotion (resurrected attribute) you'll rarely get a technical and never in the 4th quarter or OT, so naturally the lower your emotion the more technicals you'll get. Tie it to the mind games badge which should rattle opponents on both def and off. 70 emotion unlocks bronze, 80 silver, 90 gold. The impact on the opponent will depend on his def/off consistency. Or of course if they have the mind games badge they will cancel each other out if they're the same color or at least drop it down a level if for example they have silver to your gold.
