Madden NFL 16 News Post

SimFBallCritic has posted an interview with Madden NFL 16 Creative Director Rex Dickson, as they discuss quite a few different topics.
  • WR/DB interaction
  • QB passing mechanics
  • Detailed gang tackling explanation
  • The change in the running game (context sensitive juke, getting skinny, more animations)
  • Things the team wants to get to (Elite corner vs. Elite WR matchups, dynamic weather)
  • and more...
Solid interview with lots of good information.

Yeah. Good interview. Rex def has the right personality for the job and def has te right vision. I could never have said that in the past with some of the madden devs I saw interviewed. Seems really sincere in everything he talks about. I like how he discussed a few things that we all have complained about and admitted to the ratings not meaning much in the past on the dline disengagement stuff. That was one of many things in the game that drove me nuts in years past. I like this dev team. They've got a solid creative director and this game is finally moving in the right direction. Looking forward to August. And, I previously posted how I hate canned animations, but after actually listening to the interview, I can appreciate his explanation of the physics/canned combo and from the vids I've seen, I like the way it looks. Keep up the good work, tiburon. U r well on your way to redemption.

Rex talks about gang tackling. Sounds as if they "solved" the issue, but I still frequently see "issues/concerns" where the second/third defender doesn't make a "physics" based impact on the ball carrier.

I am quoting myself below.

Two examples:
(A) Positive
(B) Negative (cosmetic tackle that has no real impact)
Thanks for sharing.

Great interview, thanks for sharing. Rex sounds like a genuine person, and you can tell by the tone of his voice and body language that he's not trying to deceive anyone; he genuinely wants Madden to be the best sim football game ever. With that being said, I still believe that the EA team that develops Madden on a yearly basis isn't given enough resources & attention by the actual EA company, thus the reason why people tend to think that the yearly progress is minimal at best. When they say things such as priorities, or "we couldn't focus on that this year," I really believe that they just don't have enough personnel working on the game to improve the many facets of the game still lacking. In addition, the constant changing of teams within EA & Tiburon in the past decade have deterred whatever progress each team had been making.

This philosophy helps me justify the important progress they've made since Madden 25 (at least on ps4/XBone), however basic it may appear. I used to think that the development team simply lacked the talent needed to compete with both current sports games and other major videogames on the market; but now I just think that while the devs are actually very talented at what they do, they may not have the amount of support and backing from the big wigs themselves. I just feel that it's something that Rex and Co really want to convey to everyone.

In a perfect world (for me), they would double/triple the size of the Madden team, and start working on future Maddens today so that they can release the football game that they themselves envision in their minds, and that we as NFL gamers have been anticipating for a while. That's certainly a stretch, but at the very least, I hope that Rex and his guys remain in control of Madden for a long time.

This is not a rant, but rather me just voicing my support for the Madden team and concern for potential reasoning as to why so many people (myself included) are still pessimistic about the future of EA Football.

Is there an option for co-op online connected franchise. Where two users can play one another every game even if one user takes over for a CPU controlled team like in the PS2 days?

When Rex was talking about lining up your elite cornerback (Ex. Richard Sherman) vs the opposing team's elite WR (ex. Calvin Johnson) and the Defensive Alignment AI not able to have that Matchup for the entire game. Why can't EA Sports bring back the Defensive Assignment Feature that was in Madden NFL 12, it was taken out in Madden 13 and has not been back in the game since Madden NFL 12. I could put my best cornerback on the best opposing teams wide receiver, my coverage linebacker on the opposing team's running back, my best cover safety on the opposing team's tight end.

That never worked properly. I had to reset that all the time.

Good interview with Rex. But Rex, bro, can we get some new equipment and options to edit?

I like the philosophy. Fix the fundamental game play before adding the "frosting"

Personally, I didn't want them to get to equipment until they addressed the uniforms, which to me stand out more, so now they can go after equipment.

It's good to see them have so much enthusiasm and passion in these videos, it gives you the sense they really care about the game, the fans and the future. Kind of takes away from the usual "EA is the devil" comments we usually get this time of year. Thanks to OS for videos like this!

Great interview. It's like one of us is making the game.

The graphics are grossly outdated and game play has not made the jump we all had hoped for, so please just at the very least make the game more simulation like. When playing online this can be achieved by eliminating some of the ridiculous 4th down attempts, onside kicks, etc. Madden once had a mode that did not allow any of that foolishness!

Grossly outdated compared to what? The graphics of Madden are one of the things that usually is aways on point. The M16 Screen shots I've seen look incredible

I like Rex. I think his mind is in the right place for the direction of Madden. He seems enthused, and really seems like a guy who likes the game, and wants it to be great, like us.

I think the hard part is the corporate world and it's effects on EA. I'm sure Rex has to work within some pretty tight restraints from a resource position, etc. etc.

I love the way he talks about it though. He gets it. At least it sure seems that way anyways. They ironed out a lot of stuff in M15 that improved the game quite a bit, and it sounds like they are doing so yet again this year.

Listening to him though, he seems to be able to translate what goes on during games on Sunday, and knows that it's important, and can work with the team to find a way to do it. Everything he's talked about, you can see it working in the video clips we've seen.

I'm looking forward to checking it out when it's released, and I feel pretty good with the franchise being in his control at this point.
