MLB 15 The Show News Post

During Thursday's Twitch feed, the MLB 15: The Show team showed off a revamped Diamond Dynasty mode. While there are a lot of things to be excited about with any new version of The Show, improvements to Diamond Dynasty (DD) mode are certainly an intriguing and welcome change.

If you haven't experienced DD before, it's The Show's version of EA's innovative Ultimate Team mode. The gist of these modes is to collect some kind of currency, spend it on packs of virtual cards, and build a competitive team. EA has mastered the art of making Ultimate Team addictive -- and squeezing you for a little extra cash after you've bought the main game.

Coming from a long-time FUT player, the new additions sound great. I can tell you I'll definitely be playing more DD this year. A virtual baseball card-collecting game where you get to use the players and items you acquire, without contracts or expirations? Sign me up!

And you're spot on about contracts. At first they added a layer of management, but now they're more of a chore than anything. I'd love to see them done away with in other UT games as well.

I too tried getting into DD when it was introduced in '12 but after 10 games I lost my star MLB players and was left with really bad DD players and it wasn't fun. I love that it is all MLB players and they are with us forever.

But I also like that they didn't completely get rid of the DD player and gave us 1. Although I am not fond of it being able to both be a Pitcher and a Position Player, I would prefer either just one or the other or give us 2 DD players.

But I loved you're idea of being able to import your RTTS guy. And if this were the case, as your RTTS improved, your DD player improved too so you do not have to feed cards as the only way to improve the DD players ratings.

"First, they have gotten rid of contracts. This incessent need to manage how long players can play for you has been a staple of these modes from the beginning. At first, it was kind of neat, and provided another layer of decision making. But eventually, it seemed, collecting the contract extensions became more important than the players themselves. And, as the modes became more complex, this level of tedium was more annoying than interesting."

Uhh DD never had contract extensions so this whole paragraph is just wrong. The fun thing about DD was the fact you had to constantly manage your team and find replacements for your guys about to retire. Plus retired guys can win awards or make the HOF, which is not in any other Ultimate Team mode.

I can appreciate and understand SCEA's decision to appeal this to the mass more than while still leave the customization in there for the hard core DD vets. I just hope they fix the online stability and give us a choice on which difficulty to play online. I am sick of being forced to play on Vet/AS mode where PCI is big as the K-zone.

My greatest fear is that the mode will just turn into a glorified ASG where everyone will have Cano, Tulo, Cabrera, Trout, Molina, Kershaw, Scherzer, etc. I wish they would take a page from MUT in something that MUT actually does well. And that is all of the offline challenges and the array of cards they release weekly into new packs, plus adding new collections to fill. I don't see SCEA doing this much, thus you will see the same players once everyone gets enough packs to open. I hope it really is as difficult as they say to earn the diamond cards or else this could get stale by June. At least with the fictional players you never saw the same player twice, literally.

In the stream, they made it very clear that these cards are Diamond cards and that they are very, very extremely rare. To get more than 3 of them I feel is going to be rather difficult. They mentioned that there will definitely not be stacked teams like in years past.

Yeah they said that but we will see what everyone's team looks like in May/June.

lol statistical monsters is an understatement, mode was anything sim like and if guys really feel the need to play that way then by all means keep it offline and create multiple players to your hearts content.

I dunno, I've been playing UT for years and have never spent a dime. It's not like it's mandatory to enjoying the mode.

the 12K in "Stubs" with Anniversary edition is more than enough to get people started at creating a decent team

I hated the way DD was before with fake players, it felt like I was just playing an unlicensed version of the game. I think this will be the first year I will invest some time into DD seeing that I can just keep my players cost free unlike in FUT.

This looks like a lot of fun this year. I am just concerned about the lag if it is online only. I understand you can play against other players teams when they are not online, but I want to be able to play unique theme teams like in NBA My Team, random challenges, and themed tournaments. That would be really cool.

I love that fact that I can be collecting cards without playing the mode itself. I love collecting cards in real life. I collect cards a lot in NHL ultimate team without playing too many games in the mode in the first place.

I am very pumped up to play DD now that you can earn universal rewards and currency in Franchise and RTTS where 100% of my time is played to begin with.

Being able to collect virtual baseball cards is very exciting. Being able to use legend players in DD is also a really cool proposition (you can right?).

On MLB 14 I spent a lot of time in RTTS due to the nice enhancements made to that mode as well. So hopefully DD becomes that third mode I can enjoy on my favorite video game bar none.

I'll definitely have to give DD a try again this year. Looks cool. My problem is I won't play this game online until it feels the same as playing it offline.

I do love the way they're handling Universal Rewards though. Unless something changes I'll probably be trading a lot of my DD cards for RTTS equipment and whatever else there is.

I do have to say that the two original HUTs in the NHL series way back when, were some of the most fun I've had playing sports games online. Those two games' UT modes had a salary cap. There was ways around it a little bit but nonetheless, it made it a more strategic mode than what these things have become.

I dabbled in DD the last few years and would have dove in deep if not for the biggest problem the game has....online play. Its incredibly unstable and doesn't come close to offering 1:1 button press/lag gameplay.

I do understand and accept some level of button delay/lag. I play a lot of sports games and a few FPS games online and know we're a long way from perfect but what The Show has had in it's games is unplayable.

Fingers crossed it's more stable. I'd love to get into this.

I was speaking more at the meta-level, in regards to players in all of these modes needing to be resigned or leave after a certain time period. You are right, there weren't contracts, per se, in DD. But the need to manage a roster because players randomly expire lost its appeal to me after a while.

But I can appreciate that level of decision making, if you liked it. I think the new way seems more appealing, but to each his own.

I probably will never play Diamond Dynasty but I like that you can collect cards by playing all the modes.

I never played Diamond Dynasty before as I usually like to just play with my favorite team and players, but is DD also playable offline? Or do you have to play online against other people?

Yes, you can play other people's teams (with the CPU controlling them) offline.

I still wish there was some schedule form to follow with DD. Like a season to it. I understand the user v. user aspect and for those who like the online play (hopefully fixed) I can see where it stays somewhat fresh. But I think I would like to be able to play my squad against other MLB teams in a scheduled season, not just manually selecting them.

can you not do this with a fictional team with edits in regular offline season mode?
