“THE GOLF CLUB” TEES OFF NEXT GEN GOLFING THIS AUGUST

HB Studios Announces Full Retail Release Date For Golf Simulator

Canadian video game developer, HB Studios, today announced that its golf simulation, The Golf Club will launch on Xbox One through Xbox Live on August 19, 2014. The Golf Club will also leave early access for a full retail release on Windows PC through digital download distribution service Steam the same day. The PlayStation 4 version of The Golf Club will launch later this month pending certification approval. Credited with making some of the most critically acclaimed sport franchises on the EA SPORTS label, HB Studios has developed the first golf title to bring procedurally generated courses to next gen console. The Golf Club is a highly realistic game that allows players to fully customize their golfing experience by creating and playing the course of their dreams with the built-in Greg Norman Course Designer.

“We are incredibly excited to give golf fans the game they’ve always wanted,” said Anthony Kyne, Producer at HB Studios. “No other golf game provides players with this level of customization and sophistication in course design on PC and next generation consoles. We’ve worked extremely hard to get The Golf Club ready for launch, so it’s really rewarding to officially announce the launch date and share that with our fans.”

The Golf Club is a fully featured golfing experience where users can play against friends’ and rivals’ best rounds in turn-based/asynchronous competition modes enhanced by cloud-based technology. The game supports Tours & Tournaments, stroke play, match play, and 4-ball.

The Golf Club’s Greg Norman Course Designer allows players to build an unlimited number of golf courses, which can then be shared and played with friends online. New courses can be generated in a matter of seconds by selecting a theme, terrain features, and number of holes. Players can then enjoy a full suite of editing tools from changing the time of day to placing hazards and objects to create the ultimate golf challenge. Players can also discover new courses built by friends and the community by filtering through rank and difficulty, as well as interact with new members of The Golf Club through the Message Center.

The game is due for worldwide release on Sony PlayStation 4, Microsoft Xbox One and PC Windows platforms priced $34.99.

The Golf Club comes complete with three modes: stroke play, match play and 4-ball, no loading times between holes, and the course designer feature.

Fantastic. That should really make the next 8 hours fly by. I guess I'll pass the time by checking out some user created courses and decide which ones I want to download and play. I'm sure there are some good ones out there already.

I'll recommend my favorite: Autumn Ridge G.C. (make sure you put the "G.C." at the end of it because there a multiple Autumn Ridge courses). A guy named Joe Habiger created it and I think "joe" is in his Steam name, which will be attached to the course. Joe has a history of quality courses spanning several golf games over the last 15 years.

It's not the most ostentatious course you'll find for The Golf Club, but it looks like something you'd expect to play in real life. It's somewhere between easy and medium, in difficulty. Another aspect of August Ridge G.C. is the design is so fluid, the game engine supports it without a hiccup. I always got the fastest frame rates on this course (although this *shouldn't* be an issue on the consoles) because if it's naturally seamless design.

I envy you for the task that lies ahead of you tonight

Yeah will do. Thanks for the invite. I was playing until around 2:30 last night and will probably end up doing the same tonight. I'd love to get a couple rounds in with you guys.

I'd love to read a report from you or Jeff as to the lag between the voice communication and the game action. The community manager at HBS confirmed today this it will still be there due to the way their server buffers data. I'd just like to get an idea on the range of delay lag you've experienced so far? I've seen 5 to 12 seconds in the PC verison, on average.

I didn't get a chance to hook up with bluengold34_OS so I haven't had a chance to try out the voice chat. I'm hoping to find a multiplayer match to jump into tonight or tomorrow. I'll let you know what I find out, though bluengold34_OS could probably answer sooner.

It's roughly the same - for most of the 3 hours we played it was consistently 10+ seconds between the actual shot and the action on scree taking place -

With no EASHL for NHL15, I think I will take that money and do the same. I think these devs deserve it more than EA by giving us a simulation/customizable game like this. Since the game is basically just pick up and play with no levels, attributes etc, it should be easy to go back and forth and play with friends on both consoles.

A few more impressions from last night ...

I now know how Tiger Woods felt when he hit the flag stick on the fly during the 2013 Masters because the same thing happened to me. It was one of the coolest things I've ever experienced in a golf video game, even though it cost me two shots. The ball hit the flag stick and ricocheted right back off the green and into a bunker and I couldn't get up and down.

Checked out some user-created courses and some of them are just pure evil. I'm all for a good challenge, but these were borderline masochistic.

Unless I'm missing something, you need to have an internet connection to play tours and tournaments. I would have thought these modes would be available offline, too, but it doesn't appear so. I did play a round on a course that had a couple of scores already registered, and it was neat to see their round play out alongside my own. It was like being in a multiplayer match without having live people on the course at the same time.

All in all, I'm still really liking the game and think it has great potential. With an active group of players and some nice courses, this could be special.

No - it's not. After a awhile it started to become a bit of a grind, and I can't imagine what it would be like with 4 players.

Wow, I would say that would become annoying fast. It's a shame if they can't improve on that because I'm really liking how the game plays and I imagined it would be that much more fun with additional players. But from what you've experienced, maybe that's not the case.

It was still fun, but when you start to add all the delays up, it's quite the time consumer-

I can see where that would inject a lot of confusion into the mix. It's a shame though because when I've played 'live' multiplayer on the PC version, with turn-based play enabled and no voice communication. Everything looks and is executed pretty well. The sequencing looks right. The most annoying part of it to me is having to wait out that sweeping camera shot as its panning toward the swing camera view, from somewhere off in the distance. I'd love to just have it come up and show the swing camera view - at least as an option - without having to sit through that three of four second sequence that adds no value to the game... for me anyway.

I guess the best option if you're pressed for time and still want a quasi-multiplayer experience is to enable turn-based play while playing against a 'ghost' ball. As soon as your shot is finished, the ghost player is locked and loaded and plays with no delay. I use that more than I thought I would in the PC version, expecially on a new course.

So there is no sort of offline game mode other than play now?

That would make me reconsider buying this.

Unless they've added something to the final game that wasn't in Early Access, that is correct.

Yeah, this is probably my biggest issue with the game right now (keeping in mind I haven't tried a live multiplayer match, so I can't speak for the the delay others are experiencing, though I'm sure that will be a major bummer, too). But as it stands now, if you're not connected online, you have really only one option -- playing a single round.

On a brighter note, however, when I got disconnected from their server after hitting my tee shot on a hole last night, it automatically saved my progress and I was able to resume right where I left off when I got reconnected.
