MLB 2K13 News Post

Thanks to Flaxseed Oil and a visit to his local Best Buy, we have a few MLB 2K13 player ratings, videos and impressions.
  • Graphics and menus are exactly the same as MLB 2K12.
  • A lot of commentary sounded exactly the same, but there are a few more lines, as noted in a video commenting on Bryce Harper's rookie campaign.
  • The ball seemed to be bouncing slightly differently. Couldn't put my finger on it, but it seemed lighter and bouncier.
  • Running looked a little different, as it seems like they did improve that animation.
  • I played an all-star game and didn't notice any new signature styles.
  • The colors do seem fixed with the uniforms, but Citi Field's colors seemed way off for the outfield wall. Almost looked powder blue.
  • Pitch speed seemed really, really slow...but that can be fixed.
  • The crowd did look a little better, but that might just be because of the TV I was playing on.
  • The pitching motions looked smoothed out...no more frame stuttering from what i could tell.
  • Astros in the AL.
  • I didnt see any inside the park home runs or glitches, but the outfield felt exactly the same. However, I do think they modified the fielding camera some...it felt more zoomed in on the main fielder than before and got closer as they approached the ball.

Unfortunately, even if that was their intention, they really had no choice with the short development cycle. The other thing is they didn't spend time taking care of some of the smallest things to appease people. I'm almost sick of checking my e-mail for the updated YouTube comments on my channel, because they're all about the player pictures not being updated. Look, I know that 2K doesn't have monkeys working over there, and this is apparently a big deal to some. I can't see how 2K lets this thing go by so many years. It's not just the pictures, but they just now got the scoreboards fixed last year too. It's kind of embarrassing how long these visual things get ignored, when they really do seem like simple fixes.

The only other thing that frustrates me with VC is they will claim to do something new and exciting and kind of lay down the groundwork as if it's here to stay, and when it is only in its early stages after its first year or it gets panned critically, they dump it instead of improving on it. I'm not just talking about modes, I'm also talking about certain hitting/pitching/fielding systems and other options. Heck, I would have even loved if they continued working on a legitimate first person camera feature that was introduced in 2K4. Yeah, it was half-assed... but keep it up, and it really could be something. But they don't go all in, hear some downsides, and give up on it. That's why the game is where it's at right now, and it has presentation options called "2K10" instead of building on what they thought could and couldn't work.

I really wish them the best in the future, but only if they are serious about making more baseball games, interact with their most loyal fanbases, and try to make it based on their own principles and valiant efforts. That also includes a stronger marketing scheme which promotes the game and its finer points. If people do believe that the hitter's eye is what makes the game, then by all means they should sign Miguel Cabrera to a cover contract and tout that feature in early trailers, demos, and commercials. I think there's more that can be done with the feature personally, but I hope they don't throw it away just because it could be panned by some.

Anyway, I think they have to truly look at their product and ask themselves what things are beyond ridiculous. I'll name three for them that they can't disagree with:

1) Player photos not being updated
2) Sounds in the stadium (umpire calls, ball off bat, etc.)
3) Later in the year, modes which are no longer tended to or don't work (MLB Today/Season, zero patch work or announcements from the team, supporting one console and not the other, etc.)

That is funny because around here they tell me to get 2K over the Show. Go figure.

Went to Walmart for groceries, decided to check out the game section. They had the game on the shelf, had it in my hand, being rung up at the register and then I hear the long beep of the register and I'm like oh crap!...then I hear, "Sorry, we can't sell it to you"...someone needs to get fired!

LOL, I was trying to figure out which ET game. I actually enjoyed the Atari 2600 version... if it was lazily developed, I couldn't tell either way.

I'm not saying it's "better" turned off or anything like that, but this kind of began with Mt Oread telling me that I'm not using 2K's game system to the best of its ability. It's not so much that I was disagreeing with what he said, but it was the way he said it like I've never given hitter's eye a chance or truly knew what it was accounting for with the hitters or anything, or like I kept the screen pure for purity's sake.
Hitter's eye (the text thing) I feel is implemented very well. Players have an "eye vs left" and "eye vs right" attribute that results in how often a hitter is able to read the pitch and get that text message.

Batter's eye i'll agree is a terrible thing to have in a game much like guess pitch in the show.

Player's on a whole though I feel need something to tip a pitch in these games as trying to read a pitch with human eye's in basically impossible.

Blzr I can definelty see your points. Not updating player portiats is very lazy of the, but then again, once your in franshice the playetpr caps chamge anyway. I'm just saying I enjoyed last years game and I hoping it'll be the same thing year. Maybe they did some work under the hood, who knows. I'm hoping MLB today works, but I didn't play exhibition games. I played My Player and franchise and I had a good time with both.

I've never complained about player portraits. I actually do see them stand out more in franchise than regularly in-game (like Ichiro in that video, for example), but then they could maybe take a page out of SCEA's book and give them an in-game rendered face with a new cap when they switch teams. Just a thought. All I was saying is that apparently everybody else definitely cares about it, because that's all the comments say on that Yankees-Angels video.

I'm a franchise guy through and through, but MLB Season seemed way too intriguing last year. I'm hoping they keep up to date with it. At least if anything, it could be a sign that they are here to stay when it comes to developing games in the future. I don't want 2K to go anywhere... and at the same time I want their football game to return as well.

Speaking of which, since OS probably updated it before we knew 2K was going to be a game, this sub-forum is still called "MLB 2K12" and not "MLB 2K13." I wonder if we can get that changed.

I hate to pan on VC's expense, but he could come back with another snappy joke and say something like: "Sorry, I have less fresh material than a 2K baseball game," or he could use that "glitch" angle as well.

Be careful what you walk into.

# 111 DirtyJerz32 @ 03/04/13 12:13 AM
2k needs to stick around for many reason, NFL is the main one. The player protraits/hats that the other baseball game uses is great. The MLB season did seem interesting last year, it's a shame it didn't work out.

Here's to VC/2k pulling one off this year and going forward.

On the bright side, 2K have a pretty long history of outdated player portraits.

My biggest concern with the game is after release support. I am pretty sure I'll pick it up but it would be nice to know that the game will be supported all though the season.

# 113 Dirty Turtles @ 03/04/13 10:01 AM
After release support is really key for me. I hope they put out patches as needed for it and don't just shutdown shop after it releases. I'm getting it for three reasons. #1 the new divisional alignment, #2 potentially the last baseball game for 360, #3 they packaged it with NBA in a double pack making it a value buy.

The giants are under rated they should be one of the top teams in the game they won the world series last year and 2 out of the last 3 years. There are a lot of teams ahead of them that are not as good. Also panda should be rated higher and posey should have a little more power IMO.

Oh and pagan and scutaro should have better contact.

Still finding it hard to justify spending $60 on this. Hopefully used copies will pop up on Amazon fairly quickly.

Well, don't expect anything until after 2-3 months of the release. They won't touch the game until the perfect game challenge has been completed.

How can the giants go down from 91 ranking at the end of last years game to 87 this year when the won the world series lol.

And most of the players rating went down too.
