NBA Live 13 News Post

I wrote last week about the silence surrounding EA and NBA Live 13.

What was going on? What was the game's status? Why haven't we heard anything?

EA did nothing to help that speculation yesterday when they reported to investors the latest on the company's financial status in their quarterly report. Ominously so, in the company's list of upcoming releases this season NBA Live is nowhere to be found. Is this a sign EA has given up on yet another NBA effort or are they delaying it or choosing not to advertise it at all? It definitely doesn't look good to the casual gamer as this is almost always a bad sign in our industry if a company isn't willing to include an upcoming big release game on their quarterly earnings report.

EA's reasoning for not including Live is simple -- they apparently have yet to officially announce the game so they didn't include it on their quarterly earnings. That's highly interesting considering EA has already put out advertising material for the game already, but we'll let it slide this time.

Let's use our brains for a minute to think. In 2010 they showed much of NBA Elite and the game gets cancelled this year they showed the game not even beta at E3 and haven't even made one announcement yet about any features. I think it's safe to say that this game will not be released in Oct if at all. I could care less because it's not the game I will be spending my money on.

Oh that's easy. With the money they continue to spend no matter what, EA filters that back in the product to ensure that there's an edition of Live every year that screams qual.....oh wait a minute, never mind.

Well clearly they're taking those dollars and ensuring that they keep around the most talented guys that can push the Live name back to the top like Mike W....ehhhh okay forget about that one.

Okay, their undying support is making sure that only the biggest and brightest basketball minds are working to ensure quality on releases of their basketball.....errrrr okay nevermind again, moving on.

Well obviously the support and praise no matter what approach means that the money they are continuing to give to EA makes sure that every year they'll be able to at the very least enjoy their favorite brand of basketball in the name of NBA Liv........ohhhhhhh yeah, alright nevermind. Why are they blindly supporting them no matter what again?

But the OS staff was not trolling us and touting EA when they claimed that EA would come back and cut into 2K's sales while telling us everything wrong with 2K right after they released another 2K game in 2K12 that sold more than 2K and Live combined before EA got out of the way with that garbage product.

they should just axe NBA Live and bring back the MVP Baseball Series. That was my favorite series of all time. I remember in 6th Grade I always used to come home and after an hour of homework, and studying I'd go into the living room, hop onto my PS2, and then start playing MVP Baseball until I had baseball.

At this point, the only thing that will make sense is for them to perhaps do a mid-season launch (after the All-Star break). Cause with all the bad press and negative feedback this Live installment is getting, this thing is gonna bomb if it releases in October.

Just saw an article suggesting a download-only release for NBA Live 13. This makes sense given what EA said on earnings call about transitioning to a digital strategy.

Either EA has something up their sleeve and want to keep the game hush hush for now, or it might be delay or cancelled. I would think if it was going to be released there would be more screenshots or videos -- definitely the cover player announcement by now. I know they had the cover of Durant on Elite 11 and invested a lot of money, so they may be trying to avoid those mistakes with Live 13. I have a hard time understanding why they would say they would release and organize a development team for the last year, and say there would be NBA LIVE.
Furthermore, I don't understand their problems if they scrapped Elite's game engine. All they would need to do is use Live 10's and update the graphics, rosters, maybe add in a few things here and there, i.e, make the game stable with online play. May not be near 2K's level, but it would be a solid game.

Actually kind of makes sense for EA not to release LIVE 13 at the same time 2K13. Give players a month to play 2K and then, perhaps, they'll be curious about Live 13, or maybe they didn't like 2K for whatever reason and want to switch, try something different. If they release NBA Live that following week when the NBA season starts (end of Oct) and run some TV ads then, it might be a good separation from 2K. Give it a little room. From a gamer standpoint, yes, there should be more info about the game and what the status is. But that's my idea why there hasn't been anything news on Live 13.

After 2 years it makes sense not to release it?

Has a game company ever screwed up a game this bad before and still get passes

I can't recall a game that was with a studio, changed the whole game, was cancelled, then changed studios, waited a year, and then started on the game, and cancelled it again.

Overall, this was a huge setback in EA basketball that will probably make it extremely hard for them to recover this gen.

It's not official that EA has cancelled NBA Live 13. They just may be delaying it, but there's no word that's even the case, either. EA has a slew of other games ready to go out, and still quite a bit of time yet before the NBA season kicks off. It's just now the first week of August. Until I hear otherwise from EA, I still think it is going to be released.

I could easily see this slipping to Live 2014. No way are they going to risk the disaster they had with the whole Elite lauch etc thing.

Wishful thinking at it's finest. Is this what this board has turned into....a gossip site with NO FACTUAL INFORMATION?

Sad.
First off... I've never been one of those who believed in this whole cancellation thing, but to sit here and act like what EA is doing is abnormal is an entire different story

From Earnings calls to Big Box store dates from game site to game site... no one has ever seen this before, man so please stop it with your generalizations... its really getting tired and old

I agree. I won't believe anything until I hear it from EA, or a very reliable source.

This type of thing is crazy. Fact is, we really have no idea what's going on. We're in the dark on this one. Is it safe to say this game is going to come out? Not entirely, but it may be a bigger stretch to say it's already been cancelled like so many are saying. There's no evidence that is has been cancelled.

I just don't really see the point in having everyone arguing about this when there's really no need to. The game hasn't been cancelled, or at least announced that it's been cancelled, by EA. So why say it has been?

(not really needed to quote you 23, just the last post is all)

At this point why would anyone openly trust and defend EA in terms of basketball?

To be honest I stayed out of the arguments to be honest with you, but in this one you're right... What I wont and can't do is lock a thread thats posted to the front page

There's no doubt that they are going to get hammered either way - and truth be told, Live 13 is not going to get a fair shake whatsoever. It's it's starting already here on OS an a few other "blogger" sites.

Am I expecting a completely revamped game from EA and a title that would challenge 2K? Of course not. Nobody in their right mind (including the EA team behind this project) are expecting this.

So WHY am I so excited and hyped about Live 13???

Because I (bleeping) hate EVERYTHING about NBA 2K and I could never really get into it and Live 13 offers those like me something DIFFERENT.

Regardless if Live 13 is good or bad....at least this year I will have a choice for my NBA game. This is the exact same reason why I want 2K back in the NFL picture.

It's not about my "blind love" for EA....it's my desire for good, healthy competition and an ALTERNATIVE for the game consumer.

I blame EA for no competition

I blame EA for making a full generation of crappy games

I blame EA for buying the NFL license.. .thats who didnt want competition, EA!

..and you're being very weird... you hate 2k yet you're over here clamoring for a game that hasnt done doo doo since 2005?

I want to, sooooo bad.
I want to be able to rejoice and celebrate a great installment for a series that made me a sports gamer, that made a day like Christmas day when I got my first video game ever, NBA Live 2000, when I was 5
I want to be able to look back and say hey this is the series that made me a sports fan, that made me want to pick up a basketball and play for hours
I want to get the latest copy each year and continue the longest tradition in my life, playing franchise mode until I know every corner, every trick to take my hawks to a championship in Atlanta

Sadly for a couple years it's been on 2k, but it hasn't felt right, 2k is just, well not Live, yeah I played 2k11 and 2k12 non stop but it's not the game that actually brought this, at the time, 9 year old to tears when 34 was retired as a Hawk at the end of my created players career on NBA Live 04. Pause to remember the Cubs MLB the Show Commercial.

So as a fan of the game and the video game, I sit and wait optimistically hoping for NBA Live 13 to come along and let me rejoice in some old childhood memories, even if it only gets mediocre reviews, which I expect it will, I hope that studio down in Orlando can keep the series alive and only looking up...
