The first NHL 12 screenshot has been released. It involves Washington Capitals center Brooks Laich absolutely blowing up Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury in the Winter Classic. What differences do you see?
Looks promising if they've overhauled the goaltender AI, physics, and animations. Not going to expect jack for offline improvements except maybe a "winter classic mode" yee-haw!
Hopefully they incorporate a way to utilize the winter classic in OTP, though I doubt they will.
Online is the main thing I'd like to hear about. Hopefully some new exciting things come to the EASHL.
I just hope they knock the hitting power down a tad after last year. It was ridiculous. In reality, you'd only see a guy get destroyed maybe once or twice a game. It was happening at least 20 times in most OTP games.
1) The "legal" time frame for hitting a player after he touches the puck is gratuitous.
2) Height, weight, and momentum don't seem to matter much; if you have high checking and strength ratings, you are a beastly hitter even if you are undersized.
3) You can just barely clip a player's body frame from a terrible angle and it will still trigger one of those "huge hit" animations.
The funny thing is that there will be like 50+ huge hits in an online a game in NHL 11, but you might get 1 random injury out of all these hits that would've sent a real NHL player to the dressing room.
I'm trying not to read too much into a single screen, so I won't get too worked up about thinigs. It does look nice and I like that we are going to have the Winter Classic.
Be A GM improvements are going to be my main focus this year, along with presentation. As an offline guy, this game has grown very stale. I hate to say that b/c I like hockey and I like the NHL series, but really outside of adding some real-time physics and minimal BAG changes, it's getting harder and harder to find reasons to update your game every 12 months.
Ya Dan...just last night while having a great time playing a game in my BEAGM, I thought to myself...I could rather easily, if needed be....play '11' for another year. In fact...this would actually give time to get somewhere with the mode. [more than just two seasons]
However...I dig the game to the point where I pretty much know I just can't resist updating to '12'. But I am hoping of course that EA Canada does an impressive job with this cycle.
Did you guys see some of the things that are going to be in FIFA 12 ? I'd like to see all that stuff make it into NHL12. Check out the front page of OS.
Oh and the screen shot really did nothing for me but its still early.
So I wonder if they finally have all four officials on the ice this year? While they are adding small things to the game, maybe this is one of them this year.
Sorry but i actually believe the graphics have gotten worse. While i do appreciate the improvements, its the lack of necessary improvements that annoy me.
Things that grind my gears:
1) generic arena
2) The ice still doesn't look like ice but like plastic
3) The graphics have gotten worse or maybe its just because ITS BEEN THE SAME FOR 5 YEARS.
4) 4 players on the ice, really, when do you ever see this in the nhl.
I look at the magnitude of Improvements Madden and NCAA are making. It is evident in the first pics as well as videos. When i see NHL, it actually looks repulsive. I do hope that the video next week makes me eat my words. Lets just say that i am not to optimistic.
Not that you don't have valid gripes, but how can you say "generic arena"? They're playing the Winter Classic in Pittsburgh in that picture. Unless you're referring to NHL11 in which case I understand your complaint.

Fleurys mask coming off, could mean that we will players losing there helmets and not goalies every time they get hit. I'm not going to judge the game until I can say that I've played the demo.
Does anyone remember last years opening screenshot?
It was a waaay too low hipcheck, the player literally had elbows on the ice. This was tuned back massively to what he have now, which isn't perfect but is certainly better than what we saw.

Yeah, I remember thinking the demo was the stuff too, but it seems the more they tuned the game, the worse it got. I think they should have just fixed the issues and left the rest alone.

100% correct sir! The game got absolutely brutal once they tuned it. This especially showed in online play which IMO is the only fun part to the game because the AI is so predictable. Even online got bad because of the exploits. The main exploit with the final tuner was the ridiculous one timers. I had three one timers scored on me by my opponent from the corner. He would give the puck to the defenseman at the blue line and pass it down to one of the corners. His player would stand just above the goal line and put in the one timer every single time. When is the last time an NHL teams defense had to worry about a guy one timing one home while standing in the corner just above the goal line. It's virtually impossible to stop that in this game because the CPU doesn't cover the guy in the corner.
Needless to say I just stopped playing the game from that moment on. I've picked it up a couple times recently because the playoffs had me itching to play a hockey game but the AI is just too stale to play. So many things need improvement in this game. Every game just feels the exact same. Hockey is such a dynamic game, but EA needs to find a way to make it feel dynamic. It's one thing for NHL 07 and 08 to not have that dynamic side because the controls and features were so fresh and fun. 09 was good but it started that stale feeling. NHL 10 and 11 have officially brought that stale factor to the maximum for me. They are virtually the same two games with different hitting physics (that are still arcadish). This series needs to make some major gameplay changes.
I apologize for my stern comments about the game because I know a lot of people enjoy the game and I hate ruining it for others. The thing is that I absolutely love everything about hockey, and this game just isn't doing it justice any more. It's just not a great representation of hockey. I really hope major elements are changed so I can finally play this game year round again instead of for 3 months. I'm actually really hoping 2k releases a game for 360 and ps3 this year just so I can have two options in case NHL 12 doesn't make the necessary changes to make the game fun for me again.
i hope the winter classic isnt the big new thing in this game. nhl 10 and 11 was the same as far as game modes so i hope there is more to the game this year
