Fight Night Champion Blog #1 - Community Day

First, a huge thank you goes out to the EA team. Alain, Brizzo, Mike, Jazz, Freddy, and the rest of the EA dev team. They treated us wonderfully and really showcased what a great group of guys they have at EA Vancouver.

Now on to the community event. To be expected I can't go into specifics on the game. But what I will share with you is the plan on how things will work over the next couple weeks/months and what the event itself was like.

I will be releasing several blogs along the way pertaining to the game, the changes, and the new additions. I am very excited about what we saw and got to put our hands on. I think many people will be really surprised. I went into community day with a print out list of dozens and dozens of issues the community wanted to see fixed or included. It was real nice to see that the EA dev team had already had that same list covered. I am not saying they fixed or included everything you guys asked for. But I will say they have read just about every complaint and "want". Whether it got included or not was based off many different aspects. Time, resources, balance, need, and if it was even possible from a tech stand point.

ARRIVAL
After getting off the flight I made my way to the Sky train to head to down town Vancouver. Right before getting on the train I ran into Rob "Wepeeler" and Q "reignmaka". After the three of us arrived at the hotel we walked down to a bar for some drinks. At this point all the guys started showing up and we discussed our wants and what we hope to see out the game. We were all pretty much on the same page with what we wanted to see and the changes to be made.

We had a group of 6 guys. It pretty much covered the spectrum and showed why this group was a great group to have testing the game.

Sports Gamer/Huge Sim fans
Derek "Phobia" & Rob "Wepeeler(Rob's a huge boxing fan)"

Top Tournament players
Terminald & C45h

Boxing Guru's
Anthony & Q "reignmaka"

TEST DAYS
Over the course of two days we went in with both the developers and the game itself. Basically they wanted us to break the game down and look over the changes to see if it meets the standards of what the community is after. So me & wepeeler went in looking for the sim aspects to be met, while Anthony & Q went in looking to make sure boxing was represented correctly, then we had Terminald & Cash trying to "break" the game and make sure all exploits were found. We spent literally 14 to 15 hours a day testing. Working till close to midnight each night. It was early mornings, long days, and long nights. Waking up at 5am, getting to the studio by 7am, Not leaving the studio till 11pm each night, and then spending time partying afterwords. Then doing it all again the next morning.

We had a great group to basically cover all aspects of the game and I think the community will be happy with the end result. I know every single one of us walked away impressed and sad to not be able to play it again for a long time.

DEPARTING
On our last day in Vancouver after we left the studio. We all went and did some last night partying. It was the day before Halloween so the women were out in full force and the costumes were everywhere. The whole crew had a blast, drinking, cutting up, and kicking it with each other one last time before we all headed back home.

I was the unlucky one to have my flight leaving at 7am the next morning. So I needed to be to the airport by 4am to get through customs and all that. Like in true cajun coonass fashion. I went for the redbull & vodka's and spent the last night staying up all night partying with the guys, walking the streets, and just having a blast. You only live once right? Why not make the most of it and have the time of your life. Then I went caught a taxi at 3:30am straight from the streets and head off to the airport for my long journey home. I arrived home Saturday at 9pm, running on 40 hours of no sleep. Needless to say I spent yesterday recovering from lack of sleep. But I am fresh this morning and itching to get my hands back on Fight Night Champion.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Fight Night Champion really impressed me and left me wanting more. Not being able to play the game for many months will be tough. I think Brizzo & Mike have great direction in the path they want to take the series and I think many fans of the series will come away impressed with what the team has planned.

I will be impatiently waiting to tell all you guys about the new features and improvements they have in store for us. As soon as EA releases the "cuffs" off me in the coming months. I will be releasing blogs covering each area that I can speak on at those times. So get ready guys, "disclosure" will be here before you know it.

Here is a few pictures from the event. Nothing real special but just wanted to share them with everyone.

- more dynamic default camera
Prays there's a stationary camera
Quote:
- One button blocking allowing you to tap for a single punch or hold for lasting coverage
I was hoping for some defensive assist a la NBA 2K
Quote:
- punching out of the block
? out of the clinch maybe?
Quote:
- Haymakers are gone, replaced with a power modifier for all punches
Sweet!
Quote:
- New stun states, including a "rung bell" that can last minutes, and even carry round to round
Sweet! Hope they don't screw this up with some silly slow mo animations are birds flying around a boxer's head
Quote:
- TWO stamina bars, aerobic and anaerobic. One for punching one for movement
Hopefully stamina is present in the animations. I like turning the meters off.
Quote:
- Much closer inside fighting, including moving the opponent chest to chest
Punching in the clinch?
Quote:
- In ring referee
Sweet! I hope they did a good job with this. I also hope this means we get a stationary camera. Swivel cam & ref don't go together.
Quote:
- Automated between round corner game. Balanced and no more "points"
Yes! Just give us some good/relevant animations & audio
Quote:
- Fighters move different over the course of a lengthy fight
Hope this means quicker, more realistic footwork
Quote:
- In addition to Legacy mode (which is returning) there is a new "Champion" mode that is yet to be revealed
Hopefully they didn't split too much time between modes. We just need ONE good career mode.
Quote:
- 10 training minigames
Still calling them mini games? I'm nervous. Hopefully they get rid of the meters & flashing lights.

Nice list. I hope they get this right

All I ask at this point is no counter, parry, fireball, or anything that makes it gimmicky.

I don't really mind the gimmciky counter window/ parry crap but I'd be just fine if it all went away.

Did R3 not have a ref and tale of the tape? I thought it did. Don't remember. It was one of my first PS3 games.

What about knockout kings I thought those things were in that series too. Of course..that was a long time ago.

I had read Q1 for 2011. That could mean anything really as each company has different beginnings and endings for their fiscal years.

My money is in March sometime.

Our impressions will be better than theres anyway. Lot of the "Journalist" didnt even play the game, and just had presentations. Some only got an hour. None of them have experienced more of the game than we have. Count on it.

Sounds promising, you guys got me checking this board often.. hoping to be thrilled when it comes out. I like the sound of engaged fighting in the clinch.. Like the idea of more punches, hoping they have the pop I'm looking for. One thing has me concerned, I played the MMA demo as I hear you all talk about similarities, and was not too thrilled. It feels really unpolished to me. See I'm a martial artist first, but really just a boxing enthusiast since childhood. I enjoy watching boxing history, and Motion varies from one style to another, but is still all somewhat relevant. I agree this needs to be the 2k11 of boxing, cause EA has really frustrated me with their arcadey fest of games as of late. (Don't get me started on Madden). I have been rather harsh on the pop of punches and the lack of footwork I call Mechwarrior migration in FN4.

These are still ideas, but I think we need in boxing what 2k11 brought with isomotion this year. Different movement schemes for different boxing styles, like the way in 2k how you feel the drastic difference between a SG and C, their pace and even their dribbling mechanics. Speedy guys like Ali and Roy Jr. having some isomotion controls such as hesitation (tap LT), stutter step (tap RT). Maybe an elaborate move with elastic recoil (Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson), where he steps back gingerly, then explodes punch (Hold RT (Turbo) move -Left-, then move -Right-, then Punch). For shorter power guys like Tyson and Frazier, maybe (tap LT) is a quick move to get inside quick, (tap RT, then punch) is quick bob and weave to uppercut or hook combo. Maybe for Foreman and Lewis it's bodying up with their body mass, which causes a slight body stamina loss on their opponent. Lots of potential scenarios here.

I really hope we see a lot of variety of knockdowns and KO's this year. From taking knees to stunned and dazed KOs (thinks Tyson v. Berbick), to launching off canvas (Foreman v. Frazier) to rag doll KOs.. Can guys actually get KO'd the first time they go down instead of 4-5 knockdowns? How about guys actually throw in the towel in career? This concludes my boxing rant... still hoping for the best..

yea man you are on point. i think for me i loose interest because of the footwork in the game. it drives me up the wall i really need to feel the ring not a square its not smooth feeling if i want to box i should be able to stick and move. sometimes i get stuck and can't move in the direction i want. the game needs to be more tactical move to the weak punch of a southpaw , foot positioning, wingspan meaning more. even hand positioning swagger boxers hands too low. corner yelling bring your hands up stuff like that.

After some thought, how about calling it Total Control Footwork or Total Control Movement? Now thinking about it, the RT & LT are used for blocking, punching mechanics. But you could do it the way total control punching works with Right Stick, but use the Left Stick in a total control fashion to a much, much higher degree than FN4. It would have to be pretty solid controls however. A quick tap left right gives you that quick elastic recoil back off, move in lunging punch. Maybe left, left right gives a hesitation to pounce jab. Quick Up and down could be sway left/right, etc. etc.

Timing of punches is a HUGE concern also. FN4 gives you this bland timing of 1..... 2.... 3..... 4...... back off... 1..... 1..... 2..... then back off.. We need.... 1..... 1-1... 1-2... 1-2-3.... back off... 1... 1-1... 1-2-3-4..... back off. It's more fine tuning than just upping the total game speed. What about a variety of lightning fast combos based on styles.. One fighter comes back to mind here (Meldrick Taylor). I remember seeing some of the intros of FNR2 or FNR3 where the shadow boxer is at the start up screen throwing combos, or you see intros of the training videos. I always watched those thinking, man I wish they moved like that in the actual game!

As far as the KO's, I actually loved some of the rag doll KOs in the original Fight Night. What I liked about that physics system was the different violent chain of reactions that could happen as your opponent was falling and still getting punched in different directions as he was falling. Some people didn't care about those rag doll physics, but those were reminiscent of some Tyson fights back in the day. To me, it really gave the sense that the guy's legs went out from under him. I like over the top stuff, but how about also seeing some delayed reaction knockdowns. You connect hard, and as you back off he's stunned for 2-3 secs then falls back or forward, or on a knee. Some knockdowns from clinch connections too. I'm beating a dead horse now, but it really amounts to a ton of animations with tight control..
