NHL 11 News Post

EA Sports NHL 11 demo is now available on Xbox LIVE and the PLAYSTATION Network. Powered by a revolutionary real-time physics engine, the franchise that has won 22 sports game of the year awards over the past three years will showcase two game modes in the demo: Battle for the Cup and the all-new Hockey Ultimate Team.

Battle for the Cup:

In Battle for the Cup, players will experience all the emotion and drama of the third period of Game 7 of the Stanley Cup™ Championship between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Chicago Blackhawks. The mode features an all new faceoff system, new quick dekes and the ability to score amazing goals even while lying on the ice.

Hockey Ultimate Team:

The all-new Hockey Ultimate Team brings Online Dynasty play to the EA SPORTS NHL franchise for the first time ever. In the demo, players will be able to pick up a starter pack of cards to build their Ultimate Hockey Team. Take your new team to the ice and play against either the Canadian Hockey League’s Windsor Spitfires, or the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers. Play and win games in the demo with your Ultimate Team and earn up to two additional packs in the full version of NHL 11, when it is released on September 7, 2010.

The demo will also feature an interactive tutorial that will allow those new to the franchise to learn the controls, and allow long-time fans to practice some of the new controls in the game, including Faceoffs.

Use the hustle button if you're lining a guy up. I just got a massive body check

I played a quick game of Blackhawks vs. Flyers and there were a ton of goals.

If the demo is any indication, "robo-goalies" may finally be out of the game.

Teammate AI is also a ton better on offense.

So far so good. I like the hitting much more this year..
1 question I have about passing - I have this annoying habit of pressing down on the right trigger to make the pass and then press the trigger again to gain control of the receiver before he gets it on long passes..In NHL10 i would gain control of the player and then take the pass already in control, but now my player will one-time the pass instead. Any reason why?

I know nothing about that, no BS. So if you saw something to that effect, you either misinterpreted it or it was kept secret from us at the event.

Yes, puck protect is much improved. I used it with Kane coming out from behind the net... very nice. I was able to transition out of it to curl back around the net to shake the defender. Need to remember to try that with a less-skilled player, as I have a feeling it won't be quite as effective...

same stupid fake slap shot backhand or forehand is still money on a breakaway. as is the deke to backhand and then release deke to forehand wrist shot..
Attribute effect is still there. And I never understood the hate of forehand/backhand dekes. It's the most common move on a breakaway IRL. Maybe I'm not slick enough to pull it off with regularity, but when I do it correctly I have a good chance to score (but not automatic) and when I don't it doesn't work. Am I missing something?

Nice, didn't catch that at the event. I assume that will take place in OTP which will be a very cool addition.

Hmmm, never thought of doing that, but it makes sense... F=MA!

How the Ultimate Team? Mines 50% complete.

Well just completed a couple of play thrus and while it doesn't feel hugely different. the subtle changes feel good. Skating doesn't feel quite as "floaty". The new faceoff engine is pretty cool. And I'm happy that they didn't go overboard with the physics (players don't become ragdolls when they take a hit). Looking forward to picking this game up.

The physics themselves make this game feel noticeably different from past hockey games. Easily the best EA has done.
So are the physics like the euphoria engine?

when using protect the puck you really feel like your bracing yourself for hits. i was protecting the puck with JVR, and sharp came in to hit me. sharp ended up taking the worse of the collision because i was leaning into him with JVR's big frame. awesome!

No not at all. They're not terrible, but they're nowhere near that level at the moment.

I've been sampling some Ultimate Team and I gotta say, it's way better than I thought it would be, it's quite addictive already. Not sure if that will last once I get a good dynasty going though...

I've seen a couple people mention they're playing on All-Star, but I don't how it can be changed under Skill Level, as the option is grayed-out set on Pro level. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Nevermind... I found it in the settings after you enter the Battle For The Cup mode.

Thankfully no. Players actually have weight to them. They don't go fly across the ice if someone just happens to brush up against them.

That part is great yes, but they still honestly feel like animations when they do get hit a lot of the time. Is it just me, or do players still always land on their backs? They're like reverse cats.

Stick lift no longer leaves your player useless and standing there for 5 seconds with his stick in the air

# 94 m-dogg @ 08/17/10 01:51 PM
can you reverse skate (exploit) the AI D to get around them? hope this was fixed.

and can you still bring the puck back behind your body before firing a wrister (this move held the goalie on the side of the net in NHL10 for an easy glitch goal). just wondering if these massive glitches were addressed...

# 95 crobert0247 @ 08/17/10 01:56 PM
I just knocked a stick right out of a guys hands attempting a stick lift.

How many games (or periods, as we just play 3rd periods) in the HUT tournament?

I hope the 3rd period always begin at an even score?

Thanks, 5 more hours before I get home and download+play!

# 97 adayinthelife @ 08/17/10 01:59 PM
I've yet to see the ridiculous stumble/barrel roll animation when a player gets tripped up - I've seen 2 variations on dropping to their knees instead, sweet!

There are 4 rounds, so 4 periods total. All games in HUT start at 0-0 with no stats being recorded until you start playing I believe.

I think my favorite addition(next to the new physics) is the protect puck function now having skating with it. It just looks awesome and feels authentic, especially in tight areas or around the net. And, it's not a given that you'll exploit a guy using it.
