Madden NFL 11 News Post

Check out the latest Madden NFL 11 blog, discussing gameflow and the strategy pad.

"Ian Cummings here, taking some quick time out to talk to the community after the demo has been out for a few days. First off, one great bit of info has been the positive response around GameFlow. Based on our telemetry, 95% of games played have had GameFlow as the default style of playcalling. We do realize it is the default option, which can obviously help inflate those numbers, so more telling is that of every single play called in the demo, 80% of the offensive plays and 86% of defensive plays were chosen via GameFlow vs. the conventional way. This is very positive stuff for us, as we obviously weren't quite sure how the general public would react to such a drastic change to the way the game was played.

Secondly, I wanted to talk about the primary hot-button issue in the community with the release of our demo, the Strategy Pad. As we expected, this feature has caused quite a stir lately, so we wanted to provide some context as to why we tried to unify our pre-play controls to one location.

We realize that the Madden veterans have been using the old pre-play system for years, to the point where it had become second nature. Any longtime Madden gamer could probably change the route of 2 receivers, pinch slide protection, and keep a back into block within a second. Despite the comfort with the way things were, it often caused major confusion for someone new to the Madden franchise or really any gamer who isn't familiar with the controls. I've heard a few comments on Twitter to the effect of "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" Well, when we started looking at data, it was in fact broke. Based on the playtests we ran and more importantly telemetry we gathered from the online connected consoles, we saw some pretty major areas that needed improvement."

No. 1 less FREE patch. They can do as many as they want but the first 2 are free. At least that's what I believe it is.
SO if they do use up the "free" ones, it's still up to them to fix whats wrong regardless if they have to $ to patch it.

IMO

I'd like to think my poll of people not buying the game due to the strategy pad played a small role in EA's decision to reverse their decision to only have the strategy pad as the pre-play option.

Either way, thank GOODNESS this will be fixed!! I am not kidding when I say I was seriously considering not buying Madden 11 this year.

I'm fine with the decision to make it an option to use the old way. Should have done it that way to begin with.
I just hope they still decide at some point to make better play design, add a real play editor and/or a tiered typseof play calling system so people don't feel the need to design plays at the LOS. Granted there will always be those special people that will want to always have that ability but what are you going to do.

I would take this another step...tiered D play call, with coverage shifts, shade...but no D-hot routes.

I'm fine with that and would prefer it.

Now do a study on why it's necessary to audible so often. Then fix the playbooks & defensive play calling mechanic.

Edit: Yeah, what Ryan36 & Skyboxer said

After playing about 5 games on with the Demo, the strat pad does not seem so tough. Just relearning is all. I pretty much got it down already.

Lastly, there was no way to easily communicate that A/X would bring up your hot routes, Y/Triangle would bring up coverage audibles, etc without a big piece of intrusive UI that had to always be displayed.

Thats what the instruction book is for.

Online however, issues could happen due to LAG maybe...Mistakes....IDK

I still think it was a BS decision and those numbers in the billions are inflated for sure. I mean...what are we talking about here...EA is watching you?

Either way, i appreciate the blog from IAN, but in the end it is just to isolate the issue and defuse it by any means. But of course, i could be wrong.

I can live with the strat pad no matter how non-user friendly it may be....I am still betting it wont be in Madden 12.
I think they pull that from all the 360 connected consoles...which is a little big brother if you ask me, but that's probably in a EULA somewhere.

Eww... I think QB Vision was the worst feature of all Madden History.
