Rob Jones has just posted another NBA 2K11 Developer Insight. This one focusing on enhanced control.
Quote:
"Many of you have been clamoring for foot-planting technology. What we realized was that we all wanted a feeling of being planted on the ground, especially when making changes of direction. The new dribbling animation system allows for that. From a control standpoint, we discussed sweeping changes to the dribbling mechanic, but in the end settled on two fundamental changes: immediate and accurate response to input as well as a command system that replicates the needed gestures to achieve a move, instead of randomly throwing sticks and/or mashing buttons. What that means is that holding multiple triggers to activate a special move is no longer necessary and that moves reflect the intention of the user. Mike Wang will go over these controls in more depth at a later stage. We wanted feathering controls, more control over when to protect the ball and when not to, and how to decide whether or not we wanted to stay faced up to the basket or not. All of these were achieved without sacrificing what you have come to expect from an NBA 2K game: Authenticity in AI and movement for every player in the league."
I actually really enjoyed the little details that were written. Some of the things that excited me:
In 2K10, running around the defender(with the ball) using turbo was the same speed as running straight at the defender. A physical impossibility. No more of that with more weight/momentum.
This is what I'm talking about:
Yes! Yes!! Yes!!! Maybe now this means momentum jumpshots will be added. Also jumpshots look different depending on how long you hold the button/shot stick.
Perhaps the bolded part is the animation I've been clamoring for awhile. The simple yet critical animation of offball defenders 'putting a hand on their man' which will reduce backdoor cuts/lack of resistance when heading towards the rim/lead pass abuse.
This means the AI CPU can now do canimation blocks(hoping for real-time blocks) human users can do. In the Draft Combine, the AI CPU was able to do canimation blocks but in 2K10 it was left out(probably to make the game easier).
Very nice to see as the AI CPU was easy to exploit when you try to run-n-gun. They were too slow to react and they were predictable. Also nice to see more attacking moves from the AI CPU because in 2K10, they didn't use enough crossovers.
I'm sick of seeing the same canned layup animations and with the new in air collision, it will be a blast. Something different happens each time you drive. Which means more body adjustments/contact and perhaps more fouls such as a slap of the hand/arm.
Also probably means some of the hard fouls in 2K9 will return. Other than they won't be the same canned layup foul animations.
At last, no more crazy accurate/bullet lead pass from every player.
Bears... Family... I love your passion. But this HAS to be the 5 or 6th time I've seen you go into these topics and points . I'm sure they have see it by now family. LOL I keep reading though the whole thing too expecting something different and its these same exact points. No disrespect at all but I truly believe you have gotten your point across.

You are right. It's just that I want it implemented in 2K11 so much. You know? I'm just going by what the developer insight says.
Btw Da_Czar, Mike Wang and the 2K team have seen it:

This will prevent cheap backdoor cuts/lead pass as well as providing some resistance when players try and cut to the rim.
First basketball video game to implement this animation will go a long way in the Sim department.
Also the lead pass needs to be toned down. Currently it is too fast and accurate. Needs to be fixed in two ways.
1. Lead pass is slow but accurate.
2. Lead pass is fast but not as accurate(have to gather to catch the ball).
Also the ultimate Sim wishlist. I posted this also on 2K Sports forums and also PM'd it to SimBaller here on OperationSports. He hasn't replied to me yet.
Beluba, could you please provide an answer or is it too early to discuss gameplay? Perhaps could you mention at least that you guys are tweaking on lead pass/passing in general and adding a simple animation of 'offball defenders putting a hand' on their man?
Would be much appreciated especially within this Sim community.

So you are right. I don't need to say it anymore. Unless they mention it in the developer insights.
Nah they are not that shiny as how 2K has made them the last few years.
These are how they should look. 2K's version the red is still a bit off and it's too shiny, but that's a different discussion and I'm not too worried about it, it just stood out to me so I pointed it out earlier. Miami is another team in real life that has shiny jersey there black one.
yea i was going to say mia too but i couldnt remember for sure. I thought chi reds were shinner then that but i guess its not after seeing the pic
Is it true this year we will have full control of dribbling (like NBA Live) in 2K11? gone are the animations during crossovers and size up moves that we get stuck in and end up forcing up a shot that was not my choice?
Also with new foot-planting and also weight/momentum, will we be done with those terrible animations that force up a hook shot into the back of the backboard when performing a back to the basket move on the baseline, when clearly the offensive player should be going straight up for a nice hook or a powerful drop step layup (this particular problem happens when I use dwight howard) without being pushed off the block or worse out of bounds by a single defender (this was done by serveral times by ron artest, who is a good defender, but too small vs superman).
Im all about D in these games I wanna lock down my opposing player and found this difficult because players were able to run around me at the same speed as running the length of the floor, surely there must be a way of stopping this beyond giving up room to a player ( i.e kobe, lebron, dwade) who i want to force them to make jumpers, not just run past my defender over and over.
Which brings me to help defense, which was non existent in 2k10, it was either too late, or not even thought of, which comes back to smarter A.I, on dribble drives, or coming off screens, even pick and roll situations I want to see a player step up and cover the gaps or come to a beaten defenders aid.
Lastly I want to see more realistic moves especially on the fastbreak, crossovers are too slow, quick and accurate jumpstops, or even the euro-step (similar to NBA Live) are missing, I played Live 10 after about 3 months of 2K10, and the quick, strong moves to the basket impressed me alot, i'd love to see this in 2k11 especially with a lebron james or a tyreke evans slashing to the hoop.
Alot of my quotes have been addressed in this thread already but i'm justing letting all those who have posted their thoughts and that i'm feeling what they are saying, just hoping the game developers do too.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's the case. But I'm pretty sure it's not gonna be like Live's, and thank god for that....that's all I'm gonna say about that.
We're going to get very good gameplay this year, and that's the most important thing.

If you don't want to initiate contact in the paint, all you have to do is move the shot stick away from the basket(without using turbo). If you do this over 90% of the time it will not initiate contact. Over 80% chance of the shot going in.
I have tested this many times and it works. Moving the shot stick away from the basket doesn't always mean moving it down, you move it relative to the basket. Remember, the key is to not use turbo in the paint or else contact in the paint will be initiated.
I was wondering about this, is this the case or were you assuming? I haven'theard anything so your prob right, anyone know 100%
funny i was just checking just this second...
im not on twitter so i just read whatever Ron posts..

The dev guys still trying hard to get you a NBA Insight this week. But either way, there'll be more weeks with 2 than none, that's for sure about 15 hours ago via web
Great! A presentation Insight? I remember reading something about Mike Wang's Insight being delayed. Anyone remember something about that?
he didn't specify, all he said was like yesterday he posted that they will do several prsentation insights to cover everything. He didn't allude to this one being presentation, though someone did ask him direct, thats the response he got. Who knows.
This information sounds promising and I'm looking forward to owning an outstanding 2k11.
I'm surprised to see some of you guys who have been here for 6, 7, even 8 years, saying they are giving us all this information "early". If you look at their history of releasing information, this is about the same time as it is every other year, every August, early to mid...Nothing has really been released much sooner than any other time, with the exception of the Michael Jordan news. Historically, 2k's marketing has been terrible, compared to the competition anyways. But that doesn't matter. It's August, the games out in less than 2 months and as usual, 2K will start trickling information and videos. Don't expect the bonanza of information that EA releases though. They have to market the heck out of their games, that probably accounts for half their sales.
Let's just hope a quality demo isn't too far out of the picture. Can't wait to get my hands on this game this year.
