Madden NFL 11 News Post

Gamespot has posted a Q&A session with Jason Danahy, animation director on Madden NFL 11, detailing the new dual stick controls.

Quote:
Gamespot: "Before we get into the details of how dual-stick controls work, can you explain the philosophy behind the new control system? What are you looking to accomplish? "

Jason: "We spent time looking at highlights of some the great running backs (Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith, etc.), as well as game film of today’s running backs. We broke down why these guys were successful when running the ball and decided to focus in on two basic points: footwork and body control.

What we found was that a lot of these guys set defenders up with a quick plant or series of plants (breakdown). They would plant to one side and see how the defender would react to that and then decide what to do next based off of the defender...maybe a juke to the outside, maybe a spin back to the inside, or just cut and go.

They also had great control of their upper body. They knew when to try and deliver a hit to a defender and when to protect the ball and try and avoid taking a big hit. They could steer into a defender they were trying to truck, as well as turn their bodies away from defenders to not take the big shot and try to slip through a tackle or be able to fall forward to get that extra yard."

The body lean looks like it would have a huge impact on getting through holes, protecting the ball, ect. I just want to see it in action to figure out its complexities. Thursday night can't come fast enough.

THANK GOD they finally got rid of that canned "Truck Stick" animation! This means people will finally use spins and jukes instead of jamming up on the right stick everytime and having it play a "special" move for you. I think the "Truck stick" was the worst thing they added into the offensive buttons in a long time.

Sounds like they are taking a page from the FIFA and NHL playbook and going heavy on control with the analog sticks. I like this move and its about time!

That looks sick...
But all of Madden's new addition look sick in tech demos, but fail in the game when they put it in. I'll wait to see in game first, but it has potential.

I'm Guessing it means if you start the truck at the best possible moment(Right before impact) it enhances your probability of breaking the tackle.

Nice. Looks like people with actual stick skills can excel, instead of cheap players.

I wonder what the Circle button does now if the spins are on the analog ?

It said in that article that all the buttons will remain the same from last year, there is just more incentive to use the sticks now.

I like what I saw there! Looks like I'm going to have to get my stick skills up this year as I'm not a huge FIFA or NHL guy!

i wonder how backbreaker controls influenced ea dual stick controls? Not bashing just asking. Also I think EA has taken this dual stick control one step pass backbreaker from what i've seen which is not much on ether end. Can't wait to see how it works in madden this year. Last year the truck stick was too powerful. This should change that. Now let work on the hit stick.

Oh ok, not bad then .. I used the stick anyways, gimme a good practice session and a couple online games and i'm a have it mastered.

I can already think of some moves to pull off ..

They should add this "lean" feature into the hit stick as well. The concept would work perfectly...

Instead of just hitting "up" or "down" on the hit stick and have it go into that canned tackle animation. They could make it so the longer you hold the hit stick the more lean the defensive player will have and the harder the hit will be (This would make it so you could only use the hit stick if the player is line up and has the perfect angle). If you hold the hit stick to long the lean will make you fall over or easily get run right by....

2nd tech demo was impressive to me as I can see how it could change game play

Lol, power to you ..

Hopefully run blocking isn't an issue, and it actually feels natural ..

I'm Curious tho are both the body lean and the right stick jukes on the same stick? And if so how will the game interpret what the user is trying to accomplish.

Well I'm glad they left the old controls for people don't like the new ones. I will try the sticks controls and all. But for now I prefer the old controls instead.

Love the idea in theory, but if the vidz are a representation of it in practice, it needs serious work.

Yes I know that these vidz are of tech demos and that the animations can change, I'm just saying IF that is an indication of how it will look, those animations are still bad.

Basically looks like they are trying to do some of Backbreakers controls. Amazing what competition does for innovation.

I want to say that was just the terminology the guy was using. He almost made it sound like some arcadish feature, which it is not.

As someone stated earlier in the thread, FIFA and NHL have similar controls. I doubt they had BB on the mind, but more so from FIFA and NHL.
