NCAA Football 11 News Post

Jon Robinson, over at ESPN Videogames, sat down with Producers Ben Haumiller and Russ Kiniry, as they break down nine changes being made to NCAA Football 11. They have also posted the very first screenshot from the game.

Quote:
"Numbers on helmets might seem inconsequential to some gamers, but if you're an Alabama fan, the fact that the video game recreation of your school doesn't accurately represent the uniform details you cheer so hard for on a weekly basis has been driving you message board mad & as in, leaving threats of "I'll never play the game again," on any sports gaming board you could find in hopes someone at EA will finally hear your cries.

Cry no more.

"Alabama fans, we hear you," says "NCAA Football 11" producer Ben Haumiller. "This game's for you."

That's right, not only will "NCAA Football 11" finally feature Alabama's famed look that includes numbers on helmets, but now when gamers create their own schools using the wildly popular "Team Builder" (over 500,000 teams were created last year), they can put numbers on the sides of their helmets then watch as they actually appear in-game.

But that's not all the "NCAA Football 11" creative crew has in store for this year's game."

I'm hopefully but it is frustrating to see so many people just bypassing the gameplay, which in a word, SUCKS. I'm not going to rehash my stance but seriously people, get on board with the gameplay, physics, momentum because without it, yeah the players look cool sitting still but when you actually play the game, and that is what they make NCAA 10 to do I hope- it sucks.

Please EA no more bells and whistles. No stupid mouth pieces either. Move on and fix our damn game so we can enjoy it. We get it, the players look cool and I'm thankful but for the love of god, fix the gameplay because its a freaking embarassment to say the least...

can people chill out a bit, this is what he said at the end of the blog.

"It's very exciting, the stuff we're doing with the game. I personally haven't been more excited with a feature set than what we're doing with "NCAA Football 11.' What we just told you about, these are just some of the small things that we've added, some of the building blocks. We have a lot more to announce in the coming months, but this is a really exciting year for us. This is the game the fans have been waiting for. "
who said this is the complete feature list. No one, there's more to be announce. It's Feb guys relax and be patient. I've been playing Ncaa football since Bill Walsh and i have the same frustrations, but stop being so negative.

This is for Michigan21
Also, if they are going to implement Pro tak and smooth out the system they have to slow the gameplay down. Thats why barely anybody played madden 10 faster than slow last year because anytime you play at normal or faster the animation were so jerky. Pro tak also mean power back matters. Madden 10 showed that it was fun to play with a power back. I would only hope that this game would play better than madden 10 (which was fun) being the case every year that the Ncaa version it's always better than the privious year Madden.

All people are saying is that they are excited that these so call fluff are finally being added. They might be fluff but these are fluff that the community asked for. I can't remember how many thread we had about color cleats and certain style cleats that OSer were posting pictures of in their (please add these equipment thread) also helmets and half sleeves and 1 arm sleeves and towels.

We asked for all those stuff, you might not have asked for it, but the community did.

Wait and be patient and stop being so negative guys. Now once once we get to community day around may and june and things are not looking right then you guys have the right to #$@$. I'll get off my soap box now.

Did some of you not bother reading the last paragragh?! "These are just SOME of the SMALL additions, some of the building blocks. WE HAVE A LOT MORE TO ANNOUNCE IN THE COMING MONTHS"! Can you all be patiant and wait for the other news that they said was coming! By saying that "this is the game the fans have been waiting for" makes me believe that both sides(gameplay/detail) are going to be very pleased come release! Just think of this bit of news as the appetizer before the main course!

Still too early to tell guys.

A few things to add to this...

The Community has been asking for an upgrade to presentation for 5+ years now...and we still havent gotten it.

The Community has been asking for ratings besides speed to actually matter for years now ..and still dont have it.

The Community has been asking for Bowl atmosphere...and still hasnt gotten it.

The Community has asked for the removal of Robo QB for years....and still hasnt gotten it.

The Community has asked that lineman actually block for years now.....still hasnt gotten it.

The Community has asked for the ******** AI on defense to be fixed for years now...still hasnt gotten it.

The Community has asked for some sort of interaction between the DBs / WRs for years....still hasnt gotten it.

The Community has asked for some sort of momentum to be in the game instead of turning on a dime for years now....still hasnt gotten it.

But yet people are tickled to death to get an undershirt....

Field goal nets, windsocks, mouthpieces...etc, cant possibly take more than a few days to put in, and yet people are squealing like pigs at a slop trought because we can now add Cups to the players jock straps.

As to your comment about community day, its nothing more than hype , propaganda , and a marketing opportunity. Last few years we heard many amazing things coming from the community day and then all of a sudden people all rushed out and bought the game....

Next thing you know , we realize that what we heard from the community day people, and what we were playing were not exactly the same things we were seeing. Onward comes the community day people to state that " EA must have changed the build" after we previewed it etc..

The majority of us are not stupid. EA and their NCAA series has fallen flat on its face for years and each year the hype machine gets rolling and the chants for " just wait till next year guys" starts back up.

Your $60 and my $60 are the same, and I understand that. They are losing their customer base on a yearly basis that just wants a good game of pigskin, but gaining consumers such as yourself that are so easily pleased that all they need to do is change the picture on the cover of NCAA 10, and resell you the same garbage with NCAA 11 as the title.

At the end of the day its about money, and they will lose some faithful fans, but gain some new ones in the process. Every 5 years there is a ton of new people that enter the market and those are the people they are catering to, and I dont blame them.

these are few post that Adam posted in the Ncaa 11 equipment thread request from last year. It's kinda interesting, it showed that they were paying attention and why these things on the blog were added base on demand. It was a 38 page thread.

Quote:
This is a good thread and very helpful.

Let's keep out the personal stuff and keep it about equipment. That way we can use it as a reference point on where we should go as far as adding in new equipment.
Quote:
The art isn't where the lion's share of work is done with equipment.

The first part is the database. To add a piece of equipment we need to add a line to the database. Every line of the database has a memory cost associated, so we need to free up the memory from somewhere else.

Then the real tricky part is the in-game rendering. This has an impact on frame rate, and optimizations have to be made there.

There is also all the UI work that needs to be done to have them appear in Create/Edit player, but that is pretty trivial.

I'm not saying it is impossible or even hard to add equipment. Just that adding equipment isn't a simple issue of an artist making the gear and exporting it into game. That's just the first step. There is a lot of programming work that needs to be done by engineers that specialize in memory and graphics.
Quote:
Several new stadiums were added and many stadium additions were made. In addition, we updated just about every uniform and implementing the pipelines for the mix and match system took a lot of art time decoupling the pants and the jerseys which used to be one texture.

Also, as I stated in another post, the lack of equipment wasn't due to art time but to programming time.

Yes. This is exactly what happened. __________________

That would have needed to be set up in the game before hand. Since we wouldn't want to charge money for this type of content, we could have just used that dev time to include the new equipment in the packaged game.
Quote:
Most of us started on NCAA 11 about 3 weeks ago. Equipment is on the early list and I'm feeling pretty good we will be able to do new gear for NCAA 11. I don't know how much at this point and I can't make any promises, but it is something I want to improve.
Quote:
And since this thread is sure to get big, if anyone wants to suggest equipment post pictures instead of text. We'll reference this thread to figure out what we want to do, and if it has hundreds of posts the ones with pictures are going to catch out eyes.
Quote:
If there is one thing I have learned it is to never make promises. That is true in February... let alone June of the previous year! It is VERY early in the cycle right now.
Quote:
We'd have to 1) support the equipment in the data base, 2) support the equipment being rendered (drawn on screen) in game by allocating space in the graphics heap and RAM, 3) establish a pipeline for downloading the content into the game, 4) set up UI screens for actually downloading it, as well as adding it to create/edit player screens, and 5) anything else I might have forgotten

To do all of the above, it would be just as easy (actually easier) to include the equipment in the packaged game rather than making it downloadable.

Respectfully though, please don't sort us in this category. I know you can't make promises, but at least give it the effort you put into the unis this year. How about a banner year for equipment kind of deal?

I'd love to be able to deliver that. However, I don't call all the shots all by myself.

I can't promise a banner year for equipment, but I'll promise to do whatever I can to achieve it.

I understand that the community are asking for all those thing. And agree with it completely sir. I'm just saying to please wait it's the 1st bit of news. I'm making a point that this merely shows to me that they are listening to the small needs that we are asking for (equipment) which gives me hope that they'll listen to some of the big things that we're are asking for.

I think we will get presentation this year, to what extent? I don't know.

I think the game will play more like madden this year, but a new physic engine, probably not.

Will some of the AI issues be fix this year, yes but probably not all.

Will dynasty running stats be fix this year, i think so.

All i'm saying is that changes have to start somewhere, and it could be NCAA 11. It doesn't help that everyone is negative about it when they are actually listening. If i was making a game and trying to implement what the community wants knowing that i can't disclose all the detail yet. And I give you the 1st little piece of info (which was alot for 1st info). And most of the 1st piece of info was what the community asked for and all they did was complain. My thought would be I can't win, why even try.

I'm with you on all of this. They(ea) has shown over the years to not listen much to the community. This early info shows that they finally are. This is just the start!

Hopefully they get rid of those "gray" long sleeves and that god awful de-fense chant that you hear at basketball games as well. Oh yeah maybe they'll add the hair maybe they won't. I thought the players faces were painted into the helmet still and make the football smaller among other things. I have a question. What is the over/under that they screw up Iowa again for the third year in a row?

I'm not getting my hopes up that EA will create a near perfect game but I'm also not going to bash on them for addressing the demands of people on this board.

If this were the features list released around April/May, you'd have every right to be livid and I would be too. But they wouldn't release this much info this early (and refer to it as minor) if there wasn't more in the cupboard to share. Last year, minor additions included field goal nets and windsocks... which no one got excited about (except Solidice)

Three months from now if we're still only getting updates on different color shoes and different number styles on helmets then this post would be very much warranted, but not this early.

It's February

# 192 stoncold32 @ 02/28/10 02:00 PM
Well all I'm saying is, we shouldnt be too excited they would add all the cosmetic stuff....the guy who does most of it (OMT), posts on this board.

So to me, this doesnt mean they've finally heard our cries on the gameplay end.

And yes, I realize it said these "are only small announcements and more are to come", but last year, those "more to come announcements" were stuff like Season Showdown, and Team Builder. Unfortunately Teambuilder was mentioned in this article as being wildly successful (which to me is misleading...just because ppl dl'd a team doesnt make it successful....I dl'd a team and never touched the mode again) so I'm sure they spent a large chunk of time on it again.

The bad part is, even if they mention improved gameplay in a blog, you can't really take that to heart either, b/c they dedicated whole blogs last year to certain gameplay aspects. Then when the came out, those aspects were either way overblown or did not function as they led us to believe.

Basically, until I see YouTube vids of real people playing the game on the field, this game is on my no buy list. I'm buying The Show with the money that I always put towards this game....then if I see real improvement, effort, it will warrant a purchase.

Just looking at your bolded part...In your first sentance we have already started the " Well maybe next year" phrase that we have been hearing for as long as I remember.

Each year the same cycle repeats itself.

Some of us have had enough of the " maybe next years"

I think we can all agree that we would like to see the best possible product released. But 10 pages of praises for tshirts is ridiculous given all that is wrong with this series.

You people on here blow my mind. Did ANY of you take a second to read the first few paragraphs thoroughly?

Quote:
ESPN caught up with producers Haumiller and Russ Kiniry to get the dirt on some of the improvements being made to "NCAA Football 11" that they will be blogging about for EA Sports beginning next week. And while a slew of much bigger features will be announced in the near future, anyone who plays the game passionately will find some additions to the game in this list that have been sorely needed for years.
This means that blogs are starting next week showcasing the new improvments and such. Also, they said that these small things added to the game were the first MINOR things added that all kinds of people have been complaining about (including myself).

Also, for the people who say, "oh this is nothing special, this should have been added 5 years ago!" Who gives a flying **** if it should have been added 5 years ago? This isn't 5 years ago. We finally get stuff we have all been bitching about, and then instead of being excited we got it back, you complain because it should have been here sooner. That irritates the hell out of me.

Personally, this is great news to me. The polished version of pro-tak, referees to add to the college atmosphere, all the new equipment additions...KNEE BRACES ON LINEMEN (i played college ball, all of us linemen were required to wear knee braces), which will definitely distinguish offensive linemen from other players on the field. Now, linemen won't look like d-line, or look like linebackers. It looks like these new additions are separating the players on the field and making them look like the positions they are playing. In that picture, the clemson player looks like a tail back, and the south carolina player LOOKS like a linebacker, finally. he looks like a lean muscle machine, and the tail back looks smaller and more compact. I love the differentiation. I also love how the calf muscles are flexed on the running back, it seems like the calves on players on pass iterations of ncaa football have plain solid legs. I am loving the different options in sleeves, the wrist bands on forearm, calves, etc. The arm brace looks realistic on that linebacker, the different cleats, the helmets with the pride stickers look great, everything looks polished. Did anyone else notice how the linebacker has that focused expression on his face? It doesn't look like a solid looking face anymore, it looks like he shows expression. In terms of presentation, the next part I am praying for is team entrances, some sort of highlight show or pre-game, better band fight songs integration, and more stadium atmosphere. I am so freaking pumped for this game!

The best news for me though, is that blogs are gonna start coming this week, hopefully meaning we will see some short videos!

# 195 mm boost @ 02/28/10 02:18 PM
Oh, and while this is a small thing, did anyone else notice where the cleat is meeting the grass/turf, how realistic it looks? Instead of the player floating on the field, it looks like they have weight and are actually planting their feet in. That looks killer to me. Plus the overall detail in the cleat...instead of looking like a solid shoe, you can count the individual spikes and such on the cleat. Very impressive in my opinion. I am so excited to see these blogs.

# 196 SmoothOlaf @ 02/28/10 02:27 PM
I've been begging for one feature ever since I started playing the NCAA series nine or ten years ago. Please EA, pretty please, I'm on my knees here, please allow me to give to players on the same team the same jersey number. I edit my rosters. I like them to be accurate. The default rosters have two guys with the same numbers. TeamBuilder allows everybody on the team to have the same number. All I want to do is be able to edit it in the game myself.

# 197 mm boost @ 02/28/10 02:31 PM
Um, can you please explain why exactly you want 2 players on the same team to have the same number? That's just...dumb in my opinion? You can't in real life, why would you want to on a game simulating real life college football?

This is the relevant point. Message board euphoria or cynicism doesn't matter. What matters is, has the development team made enough improvement in the core area that you care about to convince you to purchase the game. This won't be known for sure until July.

Being put off about the excitement of other people concerning the improvement of secondary and tertiary issues is wasted energy.

I might, and you might, but not everyone is going to adopt a stance of grim skepticism about the game because of the long standing problems with the gameplay mechanics, A.I., etc.. Trying to convince someone else to temper their enthusiasm about a game, is a like trying to put out a fire with an eyedropper.

there are plenty of teams that have 2 players with the same number in college football. they just can't be on the field at the same time.

You said you played college ball??? I dont even see how you can make this statement above. Plenty of teams have players on offesen/defense with the same number.

Yes, we all saw that blogs are starting next week.....same as last year. They have to do this now b/c, imo, it's simply a marketing ploy to get the ball rolling. They never needed to do this in the past. But there's so much negativity (and well warranted) out now that they need to do something to shift it back in their direction.
