NBA 2K10 News Post

2K Sports have just posted another NBA Developer Insights, this one featuring NBA 2K10 art direction.

Quote:
"I want to first get into what makes our graphics more innovative than ever: Image Metrics. Before this year, we only used a maximum of 3 different blend shapes per head, which would limit the type of emotion you see on the players’ faces. The end result had the players looking more robotic than human when running around or even in doing simple actions such as blinking. Now, with the help of Image Metrics the facial animation goes beyond what we’ve ever been able to capture before. An actor is actually recorded with a camera connected to their face to capture how facial muscles work and better document a facial animation. Now, simple animations such as blinks are not so much just moving the eyelids, but rather the cheekbones, muscles, and so much more. We took it a step further and sent Image Metrics the actual NBA footage of the players with signature expressions and signature intros, so that way we actually have the facial animation to match the body animation. We are not limiting this to the players either. Coaches, assistant coaches, and others will have better facial models and animations to bring the most realistic looking characters to any sports game you’ve ever seen."

Looks great but I'm still on the fence. Let's see more insights!

LOL, 2k all the way. I agree with that theory that 2k just waits for Live to get done with all of their hype stuff and when the people come down they start to release info. Its like this every year, and no matter what Live does 2k is the better game every year.

the detail looks and sounds great but i wonder if the frame-rate issues some of these things created last year in certain camera angles (2k cam) are fixed?

Yes. It was already mentioned. I think it was in one of 2k's Insights.

no word on blurry textures?

I dont care about things I can see only in replays like facial animations if the whole stadium floor lokks like in ps1 times.

shame on you 2k

i've been a 2k man ever since the dreamcast i love 2k but live 10 really did do a good job if 2k10 player control , momentum ,and actual gameplay as far as defensive rotation, off ball movement are similar 2k10 may be the best sports sim ever

I'm not a fan of how the jerseys appear in the game. It creases and moves about as if it was paper thin sometimes. Not to mention how it floats above the players shoulders so obviously.

Oh yeah, you've always had the names on the Pistons jerseys incorrect since NBA 2k on the DC.

That's already been addressed by aholbert.

2K really put in work this year.

We've come to expect so much from the franchise that anything less than near perfection is looked at as a failure. For an "off" year 2k9 was still, when played under the right conditions, the best basketball game to date. There were obvious signs that it was rushed and they cut corners to meet a deadline, yet it still came out on top.

They seem to realize this and are focused on redeeming themselves this year. The 6th can't get here soon enough!

I literally LOVE the Auburn Hill Palace pic. Not because its a great pic. It's because that's the Palace pre-game visuals, and it sets me to think that all courts have this kind of stuff. It adds a lot to the game.

Anyways, we still don't know how this game plays.

Now that's ART for you!

I was at The Palace when the Cavaliers swept the Pistons. Here is a picture of the pre-game similar to the Art Direction photo.

If you watch the trailer, you notice some of the things that are talked about in this insight. Pay attention to Lebron's chalk toss, you can see his cheeks puff out (pause), its subtle, but you can notice it even without the camera being directly in front of him, or zoomed in.

Well damn...........

Wow, nice catch you really can see LeBron's cheeks puff out. Didn't realize the new facial animations would be that detailed this year. 2k's comin with it!

As "good" as Oden looks... he STILL needs more wrinkles.
