Madden 2010 News Post

The latest Madden NFL 10 blog is online. Letting the "Wildcat" Loose.

Quote:
"Throughout the season we have witnessed many different teams use variations of the Wildcat, but no one used it more effectively and extensively as the Miami Dolphins. In the Dolphins version of this offense, they placed running back Ronnie Brown at the “Quarterback” position. They then lined up running back Ricky Williams at slot receiver, and often times brought him in motion to either receive or fake a handoff from Brown. The Dolphins also use an unbalanced line by moving the left tackle over to the right side of the formation and lining him up next to the right tackle. The Tight End moves down to replace the left tackle and is still an eligible receiver because he is on the end of the line and uncovered (You’ll see a good video example of this below) by another receiver."

Was that a real double team block though? At first look I thought the blocker was just in position to block incase he escaped the first blocker. Might have to watch that video again.

Thanks for the blog, Ian.

The Wildcat looks like it's gonna be fun to run and defend. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

But in reference to that last video -- will the new refs signal Touchdown when the ball crosses the plane? Dude looked in to me, but the ref just jogged on by....

2 things

I love the lack of high knee's here, thats what I saw on community day.

I hate the diving animation into the end zone though, players just don't get that high in a one on one situation when going for the pylon.

Better than that, if you're going to write cheeze into the standard playbook, WHY CAN'T WE HAVE CUSTOM PLAYS ONLINE?
Explain exactly how this cheese.

First, why does the author call the RB lined up at the flanker position a slot receiver? A slot receiver is always lined up inside of a wider receiver, in the "slot," hence the name.

Secondly, why shouldn't all teams have this play series available? A good example would be the Redskins. Just because they didn't use it last year doesn't mean they might not line up Randle El at the fullback position (qb in the old single wing) and use Portis as the weak flanker. I really wish this play series would be available for all teams.

I am wondering what #88 is doing with the pull block during the PA Jet Sweep. He should've kept leading for the runner, instead he turned around and tried to block someone behind the play. Doesn't make ANY sense, and this was a problem in Madden 09.
Yeah, that decision by #88 to try and block the defender who was behind the play was ghastly. I hope they can tune those kinds of gaffs out of the game in the next month or two.

Even though the Cowboys didn't run a wildcat play at all last year, Jerry Jones and the coaching staff has emphasized this offseason that it will be installed for this upcoming season. Hopefully Cowboys fans won't have to change playbooks just to use the wildcat

95% of the time you see them lay out and reach the ball inside the pylon though, in madden everytime its that animation and you cant hit ot push them in mid air when that animation plays which is terrible.

That was one of the things that caught my eye. I think thats in every madden/football game. Either the pulling guard/tackle/whoever will completely miss their man, and keep running towards the safety or endzone, or try to engage and block someone thats already blocked behind them. It seems like that happens more than them actually blocking the guy they should .

Other than that, the videos looked good, and im excited to try these plays with my lowly chiefs.

they need both and make the huge one for those with the best agility.

its definitely ******** how you cant hit them when they are in that dive. you could have three guys there that could easily knock him out of bounds or plain punish him. but they just brush off. is that still the same way?

If that was indeed double team blocking, then that's the best part of the blog for me. The wildcat is definitely not part of my Colts plans. I can wreak havoc with Freeney and Mathis due to Fili Moala taking double teams.

Ian said something the blocking would be a little off in another thread. It will likely be fixed.
