Madden 2010 News Post

EA has just posted another Madden NFL 10 blog. This one covers adaptive AI.

Quote:
"In nearly every sports game that you’ve ever played, there usually comes a time where someone discovers some sort of gameplay strategy that is extremely successful (in an unbalanced way). Often times these are considered ‘exploits’ because they are either impossible or extremely hard to stop. You may find it on your own, or you may learn it from someone abusing you with it online, or you may even pay to find it on a shady website. Regardless, these exploits can often extremely hamper the replay value of a game because at some point, nearly everyone gets tired of doing the same thing over and over again and beating up the CPU by 100 points…and at this point the game typically comes out of the tray. Whether it’s an exploit or a “money play”, it’s all frustrating…so from the start of the cycle we knew that we wanted to create an Adaptive AI infrastructure in our football games. Two of our most experienced gameplay / AI engineers – Daniel White and Ryan Burnsides – took the reigns with designing and implementing the majority of this system so I hope this blog does it justice. I'm curious if the community peeps that saw the game could comment on this feature or other features that you've mentioned? Obviously it'd have to be regulated but for example all I would need to hear from LBZrule is that the WR/DB interaction info that you posted looked "good" in the game for me to be sold on the feature. Hopefully that could be worked out.

This community day stuff just put me over the edge for excitement. But there's another thread discussing how significant this event was for us hardcore Madden fans so I'll leave it out of this one .

Imagine having a 10-6 season, just missing the playoffs, and NOT feeling like you got jipped or cheated. Now you're thinking about how to improve your roster, gameplan and execution instead of how bad you got robbed by the CPU.

With some good tuning, this feature could make the game damn hard without any cheating by the CPU.

couldn't have said it better myself

I think this is going to be agreat feature! One thing i would like to add though and im not sure if this has been mentioned yet or is possible for this years madden is maybe adaptive ai over the course of the season. Example: on 3rd and 2 i always run or 3rd and 5 i always do a screen pass. It would be cool if it was situational too.

GREAT work on this years madde!

Damn. I remember when i met with EA in Maitland years ago and told them 2k was the greatest football game ever and they were not happy. These new guys are cool and understand it's not personal and just being honest. If I saw you guys downtown I'd buy you drinks!

One day, we will see a bug-less sports game that will not require patches. But, for now, EA is on the right track.

Good job...

What would make this feature even better is not only have the AI adjust to your tendency but also have different tendencies that can be adjusted for each coach, preferably adjusting themselves as their team changes, but with these tendencies determining what they try in these situations. Then you could see their tendencies and adjust your playcalling as well. This would add some variety team to team and game to game as well as kinda making it like you are actually scouting opponents and watching film. I generally prefer that tool available to either the user or the cpu should be available to both.

With all the plays in all the playbooks going up against all the defensive play types there are bound to be some glitches that won;t be caught. If that glitch happens to be in the play type normally designed to stop the offensive play and that offensive play works as it should otherwise then there will be a play that can be cheesed. The problem is no matter how much testing they can do they it will be tough to test every play in every playbook against each type of defense trying each possibility with the offensive play and then go back and test every defensive play in the same mannor against each type of offensive play.

Is it lonely under that rock?

I am all about franchise mode! And i know this is a BOOK! I
have been ever since i can remember playing madden. Play just
over half the games in a season so i can affect my players
stats for the season. I really loved managing the salary cap
in Head Coach, but in madden that aspect was lacking for me.

when starting a multiplayer franchise there should be an
option to assign a controller to a specific team, that way
there would be no accidentally signing or drafting a person
for your friend's team. This would also allow for the same
style of signing people that is used in nfl head coach which
would be really neat for madden.

players, even recievers shouldnt increase in speed at all, and
if that cant be fixed then they should only increase in 1,
maybe 2 points over there whole career (in speed)
in madden the rookie contracts are no where near realistic,
guys who are good but drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round for some
reason always ask for more than 1 mil per year which is not
realistic. NFL Head Coach got this aspect right, where pretty
much anyone outside of the first round even if they were
projected higher wouldnt ask for more than a million.

i would love to see players leave for more reasons than just
not having enough cap, or the user just deciding not to sign
him. Maybe a player wants more money, more PT, a better team,
better coaches etc... whatever it is that happens in real
life, implement it into the game.

i see that salary cap tuning will be attended to next time
which is cool! after about year 3 i have around 38 million in
cap with an superbowl caliber team. i have to set my own cap
limit! but what i really want to see is some sort of negotiation when
dealing with contracts because as it is now, anyone you want
to sign, you sign. Pretty much no matter what. I want to see
un-restricted free agents want to leave to get a change of
scenery or to get more playing time somewhere else. NCAA has
the option of making promises to your recruits, and if you
dont fulfill them, those recruits might transfer. it would be
really cool to see promises in madden; if you dont fulfill
them the player will demand a trade, or demand to be released!

back on the xbox and ps2, we were able to control ticket,
food, merchandise, and parking prices...whatever happened to
that? if people dont enjoy that stuff give them the option to
turn it off. Also, have some sort of owner approval, if it
gets too low you lose your job and may have to find a new job.

position coaches would be a nice addition and pretty cool to
see more of the better players retire to become those position
coaches

creating an expansion team would be really fun too, i remember
that All-Pro Baseball had this feature back in 2002 (maybe)
and it started with an expansion draft and everything, it was
really cool. have some way to compete with friends throughout
franchise besides how many titles you win. Maybe how much
money you earned, total amount of probowlers, longest winning
streak, best drafting...etc

maybe more injuries, look at the seahawks this year, their top
3 recievers go down, most of the O-line, and others are
injured. Much too often do i find myself with no injuries
throughout a whole season. strategy that effects your next
game, sort of like a gameplan that you focus on to give you a
higher chance of winning. It could give you special boosts in
areas that you choose in your gameplan.

One of the coolest things i've heard about for gameplay is a
snap count where you choose either on 1, 2, or 3 and you as
the QB have to hike it on that snap; if you hike too early
then your O-line can possibly be dominated by the D-line...
too late and your O-line will jump early causing a false start
which would eliminate the randomness of that penalty. On the
defensive side of the ball we need the jump the snap, early
will be a encroachment or offsides/nuetral zone infraction,
while jumping late will bring you to get dominated by the
offensive lineman. also another thing i have heard is the
preplay/pre-hike run/pass commit.

As would everyone else, i would love to see more catch
animations...dives, one handed, not that lame spin around
catch that no one in the NFL does! More tackle animations
would be nice too. I think the hitstick needs to be alot
harder to time, and only available to the elite players or to
an offensive player who is going to be blind sided. Someone
said it best when they said that the hit stick is more of a
sure tackle than a normal tackle, which shouldnt be the case
at all!

thanks for the amazing update!

lol you created a profile just to say that?

How sad...

I also love how you say "if madden was good as i's fan base claims it to be..." when most who are fans of madden see the flaws in the game.

Hi, *****! How does it feel to be unappreciative towards EA's efforts to make a quality football game?

I just hope this isn't another Back-of-the-Box feature. They said the same thing about "adaptive A.I." in Madden 09. All that did was give people a reason to keep the difficulty on Rookie mode, because the "adaptive A.I." made it easier.

Great idea for Madden 10, if they can get it right...

# 97 lv2bll @ 04/13/09 11:37 PM
i still think that this game is over hyped and has alot to prove when it comes out, it WONT live up to the hype, but i will say i think that it will be better than 09

# 98 therizing02 @ 04/13/09 11:46 PM
All the Adaptive AI sounds great, but will the CPU change it's offense based on my defenses?

All the comments and changes discussed talked about the Adaptive AI by the CPU on the defensive side of the ball.

# 99 lv2bll @ 04/14/09 12:07 AM
true, so many people including me still think that 2k5 was still the best value in football games, i just hope that ea takes advantage of the last chance that so many of us are giving them! I hope this next madden wont hafta be my last one!

It's interesting to see everyone's confirmation bias in regards to the new adaptive AI feature. Only a few people have acknowledged any possible negatives of the adaptive AI. Is it possible that this new feature was easier to implement than addressing the always deficient coverage abilities of the DB's (ie... the always open crossing patterns)?

Also, if a team without a lot of depth has an injury to their star CB and a scrub is forced to play against Anquan Bolden the scrub will get better on particular routes (because he sucks) instead of forcing a different coverage scheme?

Obviously, we will need to see more details before opinions can be formed. However, I'll maintain a critical outlook until I see complete details in regards to the new features Madden 10 is proclaiming.
