MLB 2K9 News Post

Here is just a random video from our Major League Baseball 2K9 beta. I'll try to get some of the hit variety in future clips, as I'm just playing around with the video software in this one.

I think the danger here is basing conclusions on Flash video replays. These videos are not doing the game justice. Especially, in this video.

However, there is definitely a drop in frames. Watch the batboy picking up the bat. The bat morphs into his hands. An entire frame is missing. 2K claimed that these things are improved upon in the final build. I just read the Game Informer article previewing the game and they mentioned that the early build they had was better than last year's (In the framerate dept.).

This game is quite beautiful. Major upgrade from 2K8.

ROTFLMAO!!!

I was watching those dumb icons trying to remember where'd I seen them before. You hit the nail on the head.

Lord, I needed that laugh!

I won't excuse the homerun in that video; it's pretty bad.

I have hopes for a good set of sliders though, including the Hit Influence Impact (or whatever it's called). That could prevent people from pulling low and away pitches 450 feet into the stands.

Obviously, it's a different developer so the chance is there that it's changed. I don't personally have a problem with it being possible to happen as long as it's not like it was in previous installments. We'll see for sure soon enough.

EDIT: To add, I'm actually on the opposite side of this concern/curiousity (whatever you want to call it) than Blzer, for example. I was more bugged by the Ortiz's shot (based on the previous problems in the series) than Markakis. At least he sort of went with the pitch. Ortiz mostly pulled the outside and low pitch. To each his own though.
I don't watch boston that much. But I know a lot of hitters pound outside pitches for homeruns and pull them. Vlad G., Frank Thomas, Joe Carter for example. I have absolutley no problem with it. If I guy pulls the ball alot, he'll pull outside pitches too (usually to left/center if he's right handed).

The LED boards in the outfield at Dodgers work:

You'd think they'd include the same animation as the LCD ribbons in Rogers (the team logo scrolling). But leaving them blank is pretty weird-looking.

it's like what one of teh Mods said. Stuff will probably show up on the LED's in franchise and the Blue Jays videos are probably in exhibition so that might be the reason for them being blank.

- we're dealing with people who play baseball video games, and probably don't watch the game in real life, and almost certainly have not played the actual game of baseball themselves....

a guy with power and also a good hitter (like Markakis), is going to drive that pitch the other way in the bleachers...i've seen manny PULL some balls low and outside for homeruns in real life, I can even remember seeing pete incaviglia(sp) hitting a ball out of the stadium for a foul ball once - hell, TODD HELTON hits almost ALL of his homeruns like this...but let these things happen in a video game, and our baseball "experts" here would argue unrealism...

this whole discussion has become downright cartoonish...

People go out of their way to find things wrong with this game

now, FF to 3:21 in this video...tuffy rhodes playing in japan now, hits a homerun EXACTLY like markakis did in this video, pitch is in the same location and everything...and this ball didn't just barely clear the fence either...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqsiZ2fPfbA

are we going to argue that real life has bad programming too? will this even DEAD the argument? I doubt it. carry on kids.

I think it's a given that the devs do watch this board from time to time. After reading the last few pages about low-and-away-out-of-the-strike-zone hr's being hit, I am sure that they probably come here for comic relief.

I know we all take our sports games seriously (ahem... maybe a bit TOO seriously), but I hope that the game makers will continue to take us seriously. Even if we sometimes OVER ANALYZE things a bit much.

This picture really doesn't give you a good indication of where the pitch was, though. It looks to me like the ball has already connected with the bat, and is heading out to left. Meaning the pitch could easily have been on the outside corner.

EXACTLY. And that picture ends the argument. The fact that people will still try to defend it just shows a blind loyalism, which gets SO OLD, and seems to be more rampant than ever in these 2K forums. We can't even discuss the positives and negatives in a civil matter anymore without a handful of characters (usually the same ones) bombarding the thread with "What are you talking about, this game is beautiful!!! You clearly are a Show lover!!" Blah blah BLAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

As so many have said already, THE GAME LOOKS IMPROVED, no on has said it doesn't... but it still has blatantly obvious flaws (ex: this homerun). I think everyone with the common sense to view things with a level head agree that VC looks to be taking it in the right direction, it's just not quite there yet.
Jesus. Can you at least wait until you actually play the game before you go Fatal Attraction??

i agree, nobody has played and the only decent movies we have is a old beta. So i dont understand why there are sooo many assumptions like homeruns grounders lazy fly's. Every video has something different in it and people jump on it.

there are cosmetic things i would of loved to have and i do agree about static scores on stadiums that we should of have. But everything else on gameplay is pure assumption and nothing more.

No, no...I agree. It can and does happen.

The trouble I'm having with this is that we've seen a couple shots now powered out on these pitches way low and outside. The probability of this happening in the real MLB is not that high. You mentioned guys like Vlad and Thomas. These are elite power hitters and Vlad in particular is a good "bad-ball" hitter. These are exceptions, not rules IMO.

To clarify, I'm not saying I have a problem with the Ortiz shot in general (meaning I agree he's certainly capable) just based on what I've seen in 2K baseball the last few it caught my eye is all...it happened waaay too much in this series...

Which leads to the other trouble, and the one some are seemingly failing to grasp (not saying you...you don't seem argumentative in this), is that this definitely was an issue in the 2K series for awhile now.

We've already seen two in a short sample. It's fair to wonder. Anyone with 2K8 or 2K7 still, can pop it and and take some hacks with any hitter. You'll see some pretty spectacular, physics defying shots from even your most frail of hitters.

Considering this game has not been rebuilt from the ground up, I think it's fair to have concerns in this regard. I'm not talking definites here. Just given the history of unreal power in 2K baseball, these HRs caught my eye is all.

sure... the past 2k baseball games were homerun fests. In fact most baseball games I've played are. It was too much and I hope it's toned way down. Usually w/ sliders though you might be able to, you miss out on distance, so every homerun is scratching the back of the wall. I wish for an infinant hit variety

I just though people were upset about pulling outside pitches, which I take exception too because I love pull hitters especially the guys that crank outside shots to left centre. A lot of those guys actually have trouble with inside pitches and you won't see a lot of homeruns from them when pitched inside (if any)

I'm actually looking forward to the game this time, and although there will certainly be issues, it seems like a big step and that there are a lot of people ripping into it w/ some kind of agenda (not you)

And for god's sake, we're just pointing out what MIGHT be concerns. No one said the game will now suck. Here, Ill bold it for you so you guys can hopefully understand.

THE GAME VIDEOS SHOW A FEW CONCERNS AND ALL WE ARE DOING IS DISCUSSING THEM. QUIT GETTING SO DAMN DEFENSIVE. I'VE SAID A MILLION TIMES THIS GAME LOOKS TO BE MUCH IMPROVED OVER LAST YEAR... VISUAL CONCEPTS HAS DONE A WONDERFUL JOB FOR THEIR FIRST YEAR EFFORT.

Of course, according to your logic, since I can't say things I don't like without having played the game, I shouldn't be able to say things I like either.
Well said, I was actually going to post something similar, thanks for saving me some time.
