Madden 2010 News Post

Everything you see on Sunday, see it in Madden NFL

Wow. Just 3 more days until the NFL season officially ends. To all of us that typically triggers a long lasting bout of sports-related depression that doesn’t subside until a few weeks before the NFL draft, we here on the Madden team are trying to make the best of this opportunity by starting to release information about next year’s game, officially titled Madden NFL 10.

We have a big team full of incredibly smart and talented people working on Madden NFL 10, but I wanted to take the time out to introduce a few more people that everyone will get to know over the coming year. We will primarily be the members of the team communicating outwards with the community. There are a lot of new faces on the team for this year’s game, but luckily I think many of you may know these folks already:

Phil Frazier (http://www.easportsworld.com/en_US/profile/8207621)
Phil “Fillycheze” Frazier is the Senior Producer of the team – “The Don” if you will. Phil has worked on countless versions of Madden in a production capacity, including pretty much every single one on PS2/Xbox/NGC consoles. Phil took over Madden 09 last year very late in the cycle, so (like me) he is quite stoked to have a full product year take place under his direction.

Josh Looman (http://www.easportsworld.com/en_US/profile/10842560)
I’m extremely happy to present the news that Josh Looman has also just recently joined the team. Josh was the lead designer for NFL Head Coach 09, a game that will go down in history as one of the deepest and most realistic football games ever. Josh is helping out all across the game, but will primarily focus on Franchise mode. You won’t find many more people with the attention to detail that this guy has.

Donny Moore (http://www.easportsworld.com/en_US/profile/10843815):
“Commish Don” was Josh’s partner in crime on NFL Head Coach, and along with Josh, Donny is going to work on Franchise mode. Donny worked on the rosters for NCAA & Madden for quite a long time until Head Coach started up. He’s also the resident EA Sports fantasy guru, so look around for “commishdon” on the EA fantasy site for his expert advice during the 2008 season (feel free to call him out on his predictions that went wrong).

At the start of the year when we all joined the team, we all got in a room and immediately came to a unanimous decision on what Madden NFL 10 was going to be all about. You saw it in the title of the post, but I’ll say it again: “Everything you see on Sunday, see it in Madden NFL”. “What does that mean?” you may ask…well it means that we have one goal, and that is to make an NFL football game that is as true to life as possible.

We aren’t about gimmicks; we aren’t about fluff; we aren’t about catering to glitchers or cheaters. We’re focused on emulating what you as an NFL fan are used to seeing on TV, and what many of you players and coaches have seen on the field. For every single update we provide you with throughout this year, feel free to call us out if anything doesn’t stand up to our new mantra.

Since we are mostly new to the team, a big goal of ours was to shake things up and we’re hoping to create a lot of “firsts” for Madden’s history this year:
1. We will be talking directly about features in the game about 4 months earlier than normal.
2. We will be releasing information on a very regular basis this year (looking at once a week as soon as we get things rolling).
3. We will talk about brand new tech that has been implemented before features have even been built around it, and take community feedback to choose what features we actually build.
4. We will be directly communicating on the forums throughout the development cycle, and also making changes in the game based directly on feedback gathered from the posts.

So the big question…”When does the real info start dropping?”

Check back here at Halftime of the Super Bowl for the first real bit of news regarding what is going into Madden NFL 10.

Your pals,
- Ian Cummings & the rest of the Madden team

If Franchise mode becomes as deep and functional as Head Coach, I'll definitely have to get into it.

I rented Madden 09, didn't buy though. It wasn't for me. I must say that this information has me a little excited. I am again cautiously optimistic about how much improvement will be in Madden 2010. Thanks for the information Ian. I will be watching closely. I missed not having an NFL game to play last year.

Yeah because we have to get our hands on it first right Ian?

What about Thursdays and Mondays? I mean the NFL is on those days too. You bunch of slackers!

The only bummer for me about all this is....trying to struggle through '09' just got even more difficult.

No kidding. This seems like it could be a completely fresh start for the series. August seems so far away. At least the weekly updates will help to whet the appetite.

I told a number of my friends that I was done w/ Madden after this years because of the never ending frustrations...but now I am looking foward to it as much as I ever did...Great move to keep people updated so early, I think it will bring back most of the people who werent going to buy it again.

I'm tempted to wish it was August right now.

But up here in Northern Minny you don't dare wish our whole 6 weeks of summer away.

Ya Matt...the updates will be interesting to follow.

first, paragraphs would make that much easier to read. And second, there is a wishlist sub-forum for this type of discussion.

I understand why some of you guys are cynical about all of this, but give the new development team half a chance, would you? If the game comes out in August and is another disappointment, criticize all you want, but it makes no sense whatsoever to harp on what is already done and rip into the team when they're attempting to make this series over with our feedback. These guys can do nothing about previous Madden games.

Great post, I have hope in these guys. They seem to be TRUE FOOTBALL FANS, and want to translate real football to the screen. I really appreciate that and for that they should be commended.

Excellent news.

NFLHC '09 is an exceptional game, and I hope that the powers-that-be give Josh a lot of say-so in this game. It's desperate for a major overhaul.
Hopefully they'll take everything Josh has to say and recognize

A PC version would be nice. The 360 hasn't grabbed me. Running down the clock with a running play when the obvious course of action is a QB kneel??? Please!!!!!

here is my list to for franchise mode.

multi year draft pick trades
players getting suspened
starting the first year right after this years superbowl like in nfl head coach
better scouting
draft combine
how about other coaches talking to you for plays rather than maddens choice
players moral rise or falls
drop the weapons they mean nothing to me.
CFL TEAMS
random free agents that you pick up out of a supermarket
the option of trying to keep a retiring player.
more GM decisions.
choose what jerseys you retire.
possible to bring in the legends of the game to coach your team.
like the 85 bears players have 4 coaches in the nfl right now.
have some coaches in college that are tight with coaches in the nfl suggest certain players or help with the scouting
practice squad players
two times during the off season for free agents.
have team loyalty .... madden 09 sometimes has peyton manning on the free agent list in year 3 of my franchise (stupid)
have more choices of logos CFL
thats just to start.

take what you want but i would love it if you could put my last name in it keweriga (ker e ga)

Last year's game was beautiful. The only thing me and the rest of the die-hard, from day one, EVERY SINGLE YEAR BUYERS, want is Online Franchises. If you don't do anything but make it so we can play a Franchise similar to NCAA 09, including a draft in which we can import players from NCAA 10 ALL OF OUR PRAYERS WILL BE ANSWERED!!! The only thing I would add to that is if you can implement a system in which we can all be Online at the same time for the draft, that would be unbelievable. Maybe make that a part of the Franchise Headquarter's features. This is what us, as TRUE FOOTBALL FANS want more than anything else.

What? You want my wishlist? Oh, you don't...well, here it is anyway...

1. Full rosters, including expanded preseason rosters and roster cuts. Make it an option, so casual fans don't complain about it. Also, it always bothers me slightly that teams long-snappers are generally not in the game. Marvin Philip is on the Ravens roster as our 2nd-string C (even though he isn't even on our practice squad in real life), and yet Matt Katula (Ravens long snapper for 4 years) has never been in the game.

2. Implement that physics engine. You know the one. The one with the awesome football videos. I can't think of it's name. I don't know. I can't remember...

3. For the love of everything that is good, bad, and ugly; fix the deep ball. I know everyone is sick of how terrible the deep ball is in Madden, and for me, personally, it is almost a game-killer, since I use Flacco 99% of the time, and the deep ball is his forte.

4. Touch-up blocking. It's five times better than it was just 2 years ago, but it still needs some work.

5. Fix defensive players routes to the ball. It seems like one of the patches may have addressed this issue a bit, but there are still times a LB or S will take the absolute worst route to the ball carrier and end up giving up an 80 yard TD.

That's my top-5.
