Madden 2010 News Post

Everything you see on Sunday, see it in Madden NFL

Wow. Just 3 more days until the NFL season officially ends. To all of us that typically triggers a long lasting bout of sports-related depression that doesn’t subside until a few weeks before the NFL draft, we here on the Madden team are trying to make the best of this opportunity by starting to release information about next year’s game, officially titled Madden NFL 10.

We have a big team full of incredibly smart and talented people working on Madden NFL 10, but I wanted to take the time out to introduce a few more people that everyone will get to know over the coming year. We will primarily be the members of the team communicating outwards with the community. There are a lot of new faces on the team for this year’s game, but luckily I think many of you may know these folks already:

Phil Frazier (http://www.easportsworld.com/en_US/profile/8207621)
Phil “Fillycheze” Frazier is the Senior Producer of the team – “The Don” if you will. Phil has worked on countless versions of Madden in a production capacity, including pretty much every single one on PS2/Xbox/NGC consoles. Phil took over Madden 09 last year very late in the cycle, so (like me) he is quite stoked to have a full product year take place under his direction.

Josh Looman (http://www.easportsworld.com/en_US/profile/10842560)
I’m extremely happy to present the news that Josh Looman has also just recently joined the team. Josh was the lead designer for NFL Head Coach 09, a game that will go down in history as one of the deepest and most realistic football games ever. Josh is helping out all across the game, but will primarily focus on Franchise mode. You won’t find many more people with the attention to detail that this guy has.

Donny Moore (http://www.easportsworld.com/en_US/profile/10843815):
“Commish Don” was Josh’s partner in crime on NFL Head Coach, and along with Josh, Donny is going to work on Franchise mode. Donny worked on the rosters for NCAA & Madden for quite a long time until Head Coach started up. He’s also the resident EA Sports fantasy guru, so look around for “commishdon” on the EA fantasy site for his expert advice during the 2008 season (feel free to call him out on his predictions that went wrong).

At the start of the year when we all joined the team, we all got in a room and immediately came to a unanimous decision on what Madden NFL 10 was going to be all about. You saw it in the title of the post, but I’ll say it again: “Everything you see on Sunday, see it in Madden NFL”. “What does that mean?” you may ask…well it means that we have one goal, and that is to make an NFL football game that is as true to life as possible.

We aren’t about gimmicks; we aren’t about fluff; we aren’t about catering to glitchers or cheaters. We’re focused on emulating what you as an NFL fan are used to seeing on TV, and what many of you players and coaches have seen on the field. For every single update we provide you with throughout this year, feel free to call us out if anything doesn’t stand up to our new mantra.

Since we are mostly new to the team, a big goal of ours was to shake things up and we’re hoping to create a lot of “firsts” for Madden’s history this year:
1. We will be talking directly about features in the game about 4 months earlier than normal.
2. We will be releasing information on a very regular basis this year (looking at once a week as soon as we get things rolling).
3. We will talk about brand new tech that has been implemented before features have even been built around it, and take community feedback to choose what features we actually build.
4. We will be directly communicating on the forums throughout the development cycle, and also making changes in the game based directly on feedback gathered from the posts.

So the big question…”When does the real info start dropping?”

Check back here at Halftime of the Super Bowl for the first real bit of news regarding what is going into Madden NFL 10.

Your pals,
- Ian Cummings & the rest of the Madden team

We are very aware of the kind of game this team is planning to release in 2010. Im sure we will all be following Ian and company every step of the way, anticipating every new update.

However, can you imagine being a Madden player who does not get on these boards and does not follow what is going on like we do. They are going to pop in Madden 2010 and expect to see the same ole Madden they've seen the last 5 years. When that game starts up they are going to be like HOLY S***!!!!!!!!

All I can say is that's alot of big talk and I hope Madden 10 lives upto it. I don't want this to be just another new Madden hype train that comes down the tracks every year and doesn't deliver. There are certain things we have been begging about for over 4 years - officials on the field, realistic gameplay, a true NFL presentation that is upto the standards or surpasses NFL2K5,NBA2K9 and MLB The show. Its time to deliver - I just want a football game that finally surpasses what was in NFL 2K5, you know what the true NFL fans and sim fans want, now bring it.

While you are at it can you drag the NCAA team along with you so they can start working on what happens on Saturdays?

It's great when a company is transparent like this; it generates excitement for the product and builds a stronger bond with its customers.

if it delivers...things could go sour fast...and we better be allowed to vent around here if it doesn't

Ian and Phil have some stones for doing this..Again I wish em all the luck in the world.

Your game would need the following to make up for the last half decade......

- Pile-on's for fumbles.
- Refs and chain gang on the field and sidelines.
- No sliding animations.
- Online franchise with detailed stat tracking and the ability to up load draft classes from NCAA.

Good luck with that.

That's just the thing... we don't want pointless "venting" here, as that often means insults, attacks & bashing. This may very well not be what you mean by "venting" (you could be talking about Coors Light), but we want to be very clear that coming to OS to "vent" your frustration by trashing a game, its developers or other users isn't kosher.

But, if you want to state what you don't like about a game, why you don't like it and what suggestions you have to improve those aspects... that's what we see as "constructive criticism". Just thought this was an important point to reiterate with the new Madden forum ground rules...

PS - In no way am I pointing a guilty finger at you, you just happened to make the post.

Oooh! I second the "piles-ons" for fumbles! I like that one. Can we get some sideline interaction amongst players? Guys Hi-Fiving, laughing and tripping out, show the kicker practicing for a potential FG situation and you guys at EA were really close in Madden 06 with the game-winning fg scenario. You know, when the screen turned black-and-white with the heartbeat/controller vibration for drama? This time, make a split-screen with both coaches looking on as the field goal is tried. Show winning and losing team reaction.

Show the sideline reporters talking on the field as well. Make that morphing like sound when a team scores (i.e. like they do on NFL on CBS!) small touches like this matter!

Of course stupid personal insults shouldn't be tolerated, Some nice examples Im thinking about are Apexisfree's Youtube Vids, and Kmart and Bezo have had some amusing yet constructive posts IMO about their frustrations with the game.

I think they're looking for that type of feedback and will ultimately help the game. I look forward to another video showdown thread between Ian and LbRulez...which hopefully will finally show us Video Game football is moving beyond NFL 2k5

While I totally agree with what you're saying, you have to understand that certain expectations come along with bolded statements like....

“Everything you see on Sunday, see it in Madden NFL”.

Followed by....

"feel free to call us out if anything doesn’t stand up to our new mantra."

That's a lot to swallow for anyone, let alone the hardcore community of sports fans who visit this site.

I wish them nothing but the best of luck and hope they're able to blow everyone away when they finally show the game off around Draft time. However, I'm not naive enough to forget the past.

Ian one question though, Is this a screen shot of Madden NFL 10?? Because for some strange reason the player model on this screen shot look very good, like they are more realistic and proportional then Madden 09?? Does anyone agree? The knees, shoes, pads on thighs, size of the head and helmet, all look better. I really hope the players models improve overall..

That is an 09 screenshot my man. We won't let marketing have a build of Madden 10 yet.

# 134 woowoo782 @ 01/30/09 11:19 AM
take a look at switching the player models and use momentum in the players like NFL 2K5 and All-Pro. and how about actually using the ESPN lisence?

WooHoo...I cant wait.

# 136 DiddyGotGrillz @ 01/30/09 11:48 AM
It certainly sounds like you guys have your heads screwed on straight. Let me just say this...Focus on the gameplay first and foremost. When you have that down THEN you can focus on the rest.

The running game in '09 was very frustrating for numerous reasons. So many times I felt the computer was "cheating" by how quickly they could blow up the play. It was like my players refused to block. On sweeps and toss plays my running back couldn't get to the edge without being tackled by a defensive tackle. I dont know how to fix it...but the line play HAS to get better. I want a challenge, but I don't want to feel like I am getting "Tecmo'ed."

If a linebacker blitzes and go through untouched....so be it. But don't stop me for a 2 yard game EVERY SINGLE TIME just because I am on a harder difficulty level...that is unrealistic.

Good Luck!

Oh, BTW.....Online DYNASTY

Heh. Maybe this year the product will ....you know... work? Sorry guys. Got suckered for the last time on this product. Adding features to a game that locks up/freezes is akin to polishing a turd. After all the issues with this past couple years, I dont know how people are falling in line once again. Non compete FTW, for EA anyhow.

*edit* - Just in case everyone forgot. http://forums.ea.com/mboards/thread....=1020&tstart=0

Don't forget about FA. Seeing Brady and Manning there for countless year is a bummer.

Question:

Now with Josh and the Head Coach team on board, does this mean coach mode only will make return to Madden? Thanks.
