Playstation.Blog has posted another MLB 09 The Show blog. This one covers the new and improved A.I.

Quote:
"Today we’re going to show you some of our new and improved A.I. for MLB 09 The Show. Realism is THE most important thing to use here on the MLB 09 The Show team. Year in and year out, with a development team that has a wealth of baseball knowledge, not only as fans of the game but development members that have actually played the game at very high levels, we dedicate ourselves to making the most realistic baseball experience possible. That being said, there were a few things about last year’s game that were a bit frustrating and not as realistic as we would have liked. As much as we would like to tackle every idea out there, we strategically have to pick and choose our battles. This year we decided to work on a little bit of everything, so today I’m going to highlight four of them."

Seriously, judging from the video, there is no leap forward to last years. The new fielding, tagging, etcc animations are not going to be that much noticeable when playing the game. Judging from the video, the game is the same, batting and pitching animations are the same. Yeah. Optimistic? Not yet!
How does one leap forward to last year? Anyway, you are entitled to that opinion but that video tells a healthy story that key areas of the game have been improved.

I don't think it's unfair to state that MLB 09 could be MLB 08.5 but it all depends on your point of view. This isn't necessarily a bad thing nor should it be unexpected. I would argue that the Show is already a great game with little in terms of major flaws. I think it's only fair to expect small changes over time but those small changes can also make the game significantly better without changing the core very much.

Anyone expecting to see massive improvements in graphics or a radically different gameplay experience is setting themselves up for disappointment. The Show already represents baseball better than any other sports video game represents their sport. Other games have a lot of areas they can improve on. The Show doesn't.

typo*

i meant to say from last year. I guess since player models are changing next year, the game would at least feel different.

to add to the list of little things, around the :54 mark it looks like the fielder may be wearing wrist tape? Seems smaller and tighter then the normal wristbands...and a slightly different color.

Thank you.

There is no doubt in my mind that once we play a game of MLB The Show 09, we will notice significant improvement in many areas and will be playing the best baseball game of all time.

I hope so. I just hope the sliders are more powerful so I can tweak some things better for my abilities. I need to lower pitch speed more than they let us last year.

ah, thank you

and in addition to my original "wrist tape" post....you can also see it on Pedroia when he swings off CC. Its gotta be wrist tape.

as of now it seems that the team added new pants, wrist tape, sunglasses, eye black, new sleeves and batting gloves in the back pockets. Thats pretty impressive.

so..day to night lighting transitions, new fielding angles taken by cpu outfielders, new fielding animations for the infielders, eye black, sunglasses, being able to go the short way for the 3rd out, and new tag animations won't be noticeable when playing the game? Are you serious?

And a new blow your doors down, robust franchise mode, along with what I mentioned above equates to the same game as last year? Again, are you serious?

All I can say is.....WOW!....

Your PS3 guys are extremely lucky. Honestly, I don't even want to play 2k9 after reading that blog and seeing that video. Simply amazing.

Oh no, just check a couple posts up, the game's basically the same, nothing really to see here. Seriously, I'm hoping for you 360 guys that 2K at least puts out a game worth playing this year, I thought they had some real good ideas in place last year, the overall product just fell flat.

Yeah, i didnt wait a year for this game just to get eye black and sunglasses as additions. What I'm saying is these are just add ons that should/could have been in 08.

Innovation. But apparently, The Show isn't about innovating, its all about keeping the same old and adding little things that could have been added in the past. People say the swing stick will hurt the game because its "unrealistic." But this is a video game, games are never realistic no matter how much you try not to believe it. Just because you press X to hit, doesnt make it any more realistic than using the likes of the right analog stick to hit. Also, my major grip is the pitching. I'm fine if they leave the hitting the same as long as they provide a more innovative pitching meter. They used the same meter over about 4 years now. Its not overhauling the gameplay, its tweaking them with a new batting or pitching system.
