MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

Bonds is usually under John Dowd or something like that.

i understand that. what i was wondering is whether he and or clemens were on the free agents list? neither have officially retired, so my guess would be that they would be on there like clemens was last year. but i was just hoping somebody could confirm.

biggest issues for me is the pitch counts being really low and not enough balls being thrown by cpu or human. last game there were 120 pitches total for both teams. I keep lowering the cpu throw strike slider but it's not having much affect. Can't do nothing for the human side.

Where is that?? I can't find where to change the views? I dunno if that's a dumb question, but I've looked everywhere and can't find it..

I just cant figure out how to use the Aerial Cam. I can't see the frigan ball with that camera. To find it, Start VIP Settings and it's in there.

your missing the point,he's just saying there should not be any reason why you have to turn options off in a game to get it to run to it's supposedly 69fps, In all honestly and I have been gaming with 2k since it was WSB on the dreamcast, the bottom line is the game stinks, I know you have your opinion and I have mine, but I have been playing baseball game for ever, this game is truly a bad apple, and I do think it's worse then last years. I will give credit when credit is do, yes they tried something new with hitting and pitching, but at the end of the day they didn't care or do enough to make the game feel like baseball and to compete with the other game, because this game is just flat out a baseball game to forget, and I bet 2k feels the same about there game too.

Press the START button, go into OPTIONS and then I think it's VIP settings

You want to time your step (pull back) about when the ball is about to be released from the pitchers hand. Wait for him to go into the stretch and then pull back.

I just flipped it on, I'm trying to adjust to it right now. Wow you guys are right. It's really cool to watch the ball sail through the air.

So, I've played it for over an hour now...

Pitching and Hitting is very hard to get use to, IMO. I will give it time, but I wanted to see how the game played when I can actually play.. so I turned on classic pitching and hitting, and love it.

First game: 8-2, Boston defeated the Reds [ME]... It was a very solid game all around. I am having fun with it.

I play using Classic too and like it better. Only issue I am having is I am not throwing too many balls unless I do it on purpose.

Have you come back around on the game? I remember some of your posts yesterday and you were pretty pissed off at this game.

Presentation: the 2 second pause between the batter cut scene and pitcher camera is horrible.

Graphics: i feel like the player models are the michael jordan cartoon models in tiger woods pc (circa 2001). they just look like sh&t compared to last year which were 10 times better as well as the graphics. the graphics this year have a cartoon look to them unlike last year that was more nba 2k8 than live.

gameplay: love the new pitching, prefer classic throw, undecided on hitting. haven't played enough to comment on variety of hitting (plus still not good enough to give a good opinion). pitching is definitely a lot harder which is more realistic with no more pin pointing pitches.

thus far though...2k7 > 2k8

It's funny. It seems like after a work around was found for the frame rate stutter, there's been no impressions! Is everybody happy now?
