Molina sinks Pirates with Late HR

The Bucco bullpen couldn't hold the lead and lost the game and series to the Cards. Chris Resop gave up the GW Solo-HR in the 8th to Yadier Molina.

Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle: "I was disappointed that we couldn't keep the lead for Kevin (Correia). I was estatic with the season debut of SS Pedro Ciriaco. We are looking for someone to step up and take the starting job. Has Ciriaco done it? We shall see. We must put this behind us and get ready for the Home Opener at PNC Park tomorrow."

Tabata Powers Bucs to Road Win

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a big 4-run 4th inning stick as they defeated the Cards 4-3 to even the series at 1.

Clint Hurdle was pleasantly suprised with the club's improved defense and pitching, "Charlie had a great outing today. This is a huge step forward in putting last year behind him. We have the utmost confidence in him and will continue to stick with him."

Bucs Lose 1st Game of Season

The Pirates lost their first game of the season to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Bucs had their chances, they just couldn't capitalize fully.

Mgr. clint Hurdle "I was pleased with the way that we played. We just couldn't pull ahead. I was a lot happier with our defensive performance."

When asked about Josh Rodriguez's Pirate debut, Hurdle said, "I know that it is a small sample size, but I think that Josh may have earned the starting SS position for the time being."

The Pirates and Cards play game 2 of 3 tomorrow evening at Busch Stadium.

Bucs Sweep Cubbies

The Pittsburgh Pirates completed the season opening sweep of the hated Chicago Cubs.

You couldn't tell by the look on Manager Clint Hurdle's face, when asked about the game Hurdle stated "We were lucky to win. Committing 6 errors and still winning is complete luck. We are going to have to look at what the problem is and fix it fast."

Garrett Jones had a monster game knocking in 5 runs, while hitting a 3-Run HR and a 2-Run single.

The Buccos travel to St. Louis to take on the Cardinals in a 3 game set. Ross Ohlendorf takes the mound tomorrow afternoon for the Pirates.

Pirates Capitalize on Cubs Mistakes
Power past Cubs 7-1 to open season

The Pirates took advantage of 3 Chicago errors on their way to an Opening Day rout. The wind was playing tricks on fly balls all game long.

Kevin Correia made a stellar debut for the Bucs, going 8 strong innings while allowing just 1 run. For his effort, he was named the Player of the Game. Said Correia, "I couldn't have asked for a better game. I just wanted to prove myself to me new teammates, and I think that I did. I realize that this is only 1 of 162, so we still have a ton of work to do."

Clearing the Hurdle, A Pittsburgh Pirates Franchise

Lets take a look back at the 2010-2011 Offseason for the Pittsburgh Pirates:

Added: Lyle Overbay, Kevin Correia, Matt Diaz, Andy Marte, Scott Olson, Jose Veras, Corey Wimberly, Josh Rodriguez (Rule V), Aaron Thompson, Garrett Olson.

Re-signed: Brian Burres.

Lost/Unsigned: Zach Duke, Lastings Milledge, Chan Ho Park, Delwyn Young, Andy LaRoche, Joe Martinez, Wil Ledezma, Dana Eveland, Brian Bass, Erik Kratz, Argenis Diaz, Brendan Donnelly, Steven Jackson, Brandon Moss.

The Spin: It was business as usual for the Pirates this winter. Overbay, Correia and Diaz qualified as "big" signings, and they also added a handful of former stars/prospects who flamed out in other organizations. There is nothing to suggest that the Pirates are ready to climb out of the cellar in the Central, but their lineup is beginning to feature a lot of young, in-house talent.

Remaining Questions: Right field is the biggest question among the everyday players, as Diaz, Garrett Jones, and Ryan Doumit are all options. There is likely to be a platoon there, and the Pirates may continue to offer Doumit in trade talks. Joel Hanrahan has beaten Evan Meek for the right to assume the Closer's role.

Perhaps the most significant gain was the hiring of former Colorado Rockies Manager and Texas Rangers Hitting Coach, Clint Hurdle.

New Bucco Manager Clint Hurdle with Bucco GM Neal Huntington

Hurdle is very excited going into the 2011 campaign. "I believe that we can and WILL win, I wouldn't have taken the job if I didn't feel that way." Hurdle has experience working with young players, and the Pirates have their fair share of young stars on the team. "I am looking forward to having a lineup that consists of future susperstars Jose Tabata (LF), Andrew McCutchen (CF), Pedro Alvarez (3B), and Neil Walker (2B). To have those 4 guys plus James MacDonald in the rotation, I am confident that we can make some nosie this year."

Hurdle continued, "The fans of the Pirates deserve a winner, 18 years is way too long. To have the most beautiful ballpark in all of baseball, we plan to give the fans a show, hopefully all the way through October."

Most beautiful park in baseball? Clint Hurdle thinks so

Will the Bucs win? Will they falter? Tune in and see.

Cutch is Clutch, Career High 6 RBI

In an offensive explosion, the Buccos and Dodgers put up 18 runs, with the Bucs prevailing 10-8.

Garrett Jones make a great catch in right

Neither starting pitcher had an outing to write home about, with Kevin Hart lasting only 2 innings and Josh Towers lasting 4+ innings.

McCutchen hits his Grand Slam to tie the game

The game was looking out of reach until Andrew McCutchen hit a Grand Slam in the 5th inning to tie the at 7. The Pirates tacked on 3 more runs, and the bullpen did it's job.

The Pirates head back home to take on the Chicago Cubs after an off day tomorrow.

Morton Rocked, Bucs Lose 2nd in a Row

The Pirates Played so bad tonight that they do not deserve any pictures to be published.

Charlie Morton did not have his greatest stuff tonight giving up 6 ER in just 5 Innings.

The offense did not show up until the 7th, but it was too little too late.

Vincente Padilla was spot on for the Dodgers, going 7 innings giving up only 1 run.

The Pirates will try to split the series tomorrow afternoon.

Mistakes Cost Pirates in Loss

McCutchen may have gone 0-5, but he made a nice catch in the 6th

Walks and errors cost the Pirates a game in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

Paul Maholm did not have a great night especially in the 3rd inning, walking 2 and giving up 3 runs.

The only bright spot was Garrett Jones' 2 Run HR in the 1st.

Jones' 1st Inning HR was all the offense the Bucs would get

The Dodgers and Pirates continue the series tomorrow night.

Pearce's 2 Homers Down Dodgers

Pearce hits the first of his 2 HRs

Steve Pearce continues to make his case for more playing time hitting 2 homeruns, including the Game winner as the Buccos get back on the winning track.

The Umpires needed video review to confirm Pearce's second HR

SP Ross Ohlendorf picked up his league leading 5th win of the season, even though he only lasted 5 innings.

Ohlendorf makes Manny look silly

The Pirates and Dodgers play game 2 of a 4 game set tomorrow evening with Paul Maholm (2-2 3.52) going for the Bucs, while LA counters with Hideki Kuroda (2-2 4.86)

Brewers sink Buc's Ship

Snap Pirates streak at 12

All good things must come to an end. The Brewers snapped the Pirates season high winning streak at 12 games, thanks in part to the Bucco bullpen faltering.

Duke pitched well enough for the win, but instead got a ND

Zach Duke pitched 6 scoreless innings, but ended up with a no decision as Jack Taschner gave up 2 late Brewer runs in earning his first loss of the season.

The agony of defeat

The Pirates now must regroup as they head to LA for a 4 game set against the Dodgers.

Milledge's Grand Slam Beats Brewers

The Pirates continue their red hot play, winning their 12th straight, and we have Lastings Milledge to thank.

Milledge's Grand Slam in the 7th

With the score tied at 2 in the 7th inning, Brewers pitcher Chris Narveson intentionally walked Ryan Doumit to load the bases, bad mistake. Lastings Milledge was up on deck, and worked the count to 2-1, when he took the next fastball deep to left for his first Grand Slam as a Pittsburgh Pirate.

Neil Walker also had a breakout game going 3-4 and raising his average to .379.

The Pirates and Brewers complete the 3 game series tomorrow afternoon with Zach Duke throwing for the Bucs and Yovanni Gallardo for the Brew Crew

Jones, Bullpen Power Bucs to 11th Straight Win

Garrett Jones hit 2 solo homers and the Bucco bullpen threw 5 scoreless innings powering the Pirates to their 11th straight win.

Jones crushes this Hoffman pitch for the GW HR in the 10th

Starting pitcher Charlie Morton did not have a great outing, lasting only 5 innings and getting a no decision, before turning it over to the Pen.

Chris Jakubauskas and the bullpen shut the Brewers out

Lastings Milledge's single in the 8th plated Neil Walker to tie the game at 3, then Garrett Jones hit his second HR of the game to take the lead for good in the 10th.

The Pirates and Brewers continue their series tomorrow night with Kevin Hart (1-0, 2.25 ERA) starting for the Bucs, while the Brewers counter with Manny Parra (1-1, 4.50 ERA).

Bucco Bits After the game, Ryan Church was activated from the DL. To make room for him, the Pirates sent Ronny Cedeno to AAA, Cedeno will have to clear waiver first.
