Pirates Lose Game, Series
The Pirates just could not find their groove in the rubber match of the opening series against the Dodgers. Paul Maholm was knocked around, and the offense could not sustain any kind of momentum. What makes this loss sting a little more was the surprise move for Dodgers Manager Joe Torre to start Hiroki Kuroda just 1 day after taking the loss in game 2.

On a chilly, windy April night at PNC Park, Ross Ohlendorf took the mound for what he thought would be a typical outing.....but it was far from it. Ohlendorf pitched lights out andrecorded his first career no-no and the Pirates first since 1997. If it hadn't been for a walk to Russel Martin, he would have been perfect.
In other news, Garrett Jones hit his first HR of the season, and it was huge. With the bases loaded and 1 out, he took a Kuroda fastball over the Clemente wall for a Grand Slam.
Check back to see how the series will finish out.

Spring Training Concludes/Opening Day Roster Announced
When we last spoke with Pirates Manager he outlined 3 key position battles, 3B, SS, and 5th Starter.....Here is how the battles were played out.
The 3B job was won by Andy LaRoche, as was expected, but it didn't come easy. The highly touted prospect, Pedro Alvarez, really put the pressure on. But in the end, experience won out, and Alvarez will start the season in AAA.
The 3B job was won by Andy LaRoche, as was expected, but it didn't come easy. The highly touted prospect, Pedro Alvarez, really put the pressure on. But in the end, experience won out, and Alvarez will start the season in AAA.
- Pedro Alvarez: .333 AVG, 1 Double, No HR, 2 RBI
- Andy LaRoche: .297 AVG, 6 Doubles, 2 HRs, 7 RBI
The SS battle came down to the wire, with newcomer Bobby Crosby beating out Ronny Cedeno and prospect Argenis Diaz. Diaz bowed out of the race early as he could not find his bat at all, which left Crosby vs Cedeno. In the end, Crosby's superior offense came out on top. With Crosby winning the SS job, Cedeno will become the back-up at SS and 2B.
- Bobby Crosby: .247 AVG, 2 Doubles, 1 HR, 5 RBI
- Ronny Cedeno .240 AVG, 1 Double, 0 HR, 4 RBI
Finally the 5th starter job was between Hayden Penn, Kevin Hart, and rookie Daniel McCutchen. In the end Hart beat out the other 2, and won the 5th starter job outright.
- Hayden Penn: 0-0 5.40 ERA, 10.0 IP, 6 ER
- Kevin Hart: 1-1, 3.31 ERA 16.1 IP, 6 ER
- Daniel McCutchen: 2-3, 7.11 ERA, 19.0 IP, 15 ER
As the Pirates head north for Pittsburgh, a few players really stood out during camp. Leading the hitters was CF Andrew McCutchen (.341 AVG, 5 Doubles, 3 HR, 8 RBI) and SP Charlie Morton (1-1, 2.88 ERA, 17 Ks).

Spring Training Update #1
As the Buccos converge on Pirate City in Bradenton, a few position battles have sprung up.
Here are the individual battles:
5th Starter is between
- Daniel McCutchen
- Kevin Hart (inside track at beginning of camp)
- Newcomer Hayden Penn
- Ronny Cedeno (It is his job to lose)
- Bobby Crosby (FA signee who is battling)
- Argenis Diaz (youngster who wants to surprise everyone)
- Andy LaRoche (Pretty much locked in)
- Pedro Alvarez (Prospect who will probably start in AAA)
- On the 5th Starter....."We are really excited to see who comes out on top. Last year Kevin Hart showed some promise after we acquired him from the Cubbies, but he can have some control issues at times. We are very interested to see what Danny can bring to the table. He has great stuff, but we are a little worried about his composure. Finally, we just claimed Hayden off of waivers from Florida, so we are very eager to see how he can help the ball club out."
- On the SS battle.... "Ronny provided great defense after he came over from Seattle, but we wouldlike to see more out of his bat. Bobby Crosby is a former Rookie of the Year and we are estatic that he signed with us in the winter. He will definitely get a chance to compete, we really like his bat and his glove not far behind. Finally Diaz is an intriging prospect. We know that he hits on the light side, but he is by far the best defensivemiddle infielder in our farmsystem. For him to win this job, he will need to play lights out from day one. More than likely its between Ronny and Bobby."
- Lastly on the 3B battle....."Andy is pretty well locked in, but we want to give Pedro every chance to win the job. Andy is a great defensive third baseman, and his bat came around the last month of the season. Pedro is our best power hitting prospect in years.... If he does not win the 3B jobin the spring, he will not be far off."
