Felix Doubront has been traded to the Tampa Bay Rays for Kyle Farnsworth and Fernando Rodney. Both Farnsworth and Rodney have expiring deals and are well past prime. Doubront may have some upside; it is unclear as to whether or not he has peaked.
This is Farnsworth's third stint with the Tigers. He spent parts of the 2005 and 2008 seasons with the team. Hopefully, this one is the charm.
Jurrjens declined to respond to Leyland; however, these are some talking points to remember when the Tigers head down to the Trop for a four-game series later this season.
Leyland had some softer words for his own starter, Johnny Cueto, who relieved Brandon League, but gave up three earned runs in the 6th: "He faced a tough part of the lineup. These were guys who probably had his number when he was in the NL. I tried playing the numbers; [Cueto] is lethal against lefties."
The Tigers manager also liked Kyle Farnsworth, who has pitched for Leyland on two separate occassions. When commenting on Farnsworth, Leyland claims that he'll be getting the attention of GM Dave Dombrowski before July 31st.
Surprisingly, there was not much to be said on the other side by outspoken NL Manager Ozzie Guillen. Despite winning the NL Pennant last season, Guillen didn't feel as personally connected to the game as Leyland: "I'm not going to say that this game means as much to me, because I don't want to promise that I'm making it back to the World Series. Leyland and his guys swept us! That should say something." Guillen, however, did thank his All-Stars for "holding on". The AL scored 3 runs late to fall short of the comeback.

Simply put, the Tigers are on fire. All starters recorded hits. Cabrera went 3-4 with 2 homers. Justin Verlander pitched 8 innings, giving up only five hits.
W: 7-2
Matt Cain went the distance and struck out nine. A 6-run 5th inning knocked Edwin Jackson out of the game. Jose Altuve went 2-4 and stole 2 bases. Adam Jones homered and stole a base. Brett Lawrie hit an inside-the-park home run!
W: 5-0
Johnny Cueto was perfect through 5 1/3 IP. He finished with 8 1/3 IP. Johnathan Lucroy's RBI-triple was his first hit as a Tiger.

Competition between Detroit and Baltimore increased drastically last season when the two teams swapped offensive stars and prospects. Adam Jones and JJ Hardy came to Detroit; Austin Jackson, Jhonny Peralta, and Nick Castellanos went to Baltimore.
All have been successful, but the Tigers have done so much more over that period of time. The series ended in a sweep for the Tigers, but each of these stars made a statement against their former teams.
W: 2-1
After 8 innings of futility, the Tigers got three straight hits and a sacrifice fly to score the game-tying and walk-off runs in the 9th.
W: 5-2
James Shields started off rough (2 ER in 1st), but he gritted through 7 innings and struck out 10. Adam Jones' 2-RBI double scored the game-winning runs. Craig Kimbrel converted his 22nd save.
W: 11-4
Jose Altuve went 2-5, scoring a run and stealing a base in his debut. Johnathan Lucroy went 0-5, but he made lots of contact in each at-bat. The regulars in the lineup seemed to benefit the most. Ryan Braun went 3-5 (HR, 4 RBI, 3 R, SB). Adam Jones went 5-5 (3 RBI). And, it always helps when your starter (Doug Fister) strikes out 10 (in only 6 1/3 IP).

The Tigers traded catcher Wellington Castillo to the Brewers for catcher Johnathan Lucroy. Lucroy is locked up for a longer period of time and arguably has more upside.
The Tigers traded Howie Kendrick and low-level prospect Dave Clarke to the Astros for Jose Altuve. Altuve is only 23; and he also makes approximately $6 million less than Kendrick this season.
David Freese is rumored to be on the outs in Detroit. The platoon righty is 30, and the organization is aware that his value will not be as great in the future.

The Mariners tied the game at two, thanks to an unearned run. With two men on in the 9th, Sean Kelley threw his only pitch of the game. It happened to result in a walk off single for JJ Hardy.
W: 9-1
Justin Verlander went the distance for his 17th win. Miguel Cabrera notched career hit 2000 on a day where he homered twice, scored thrice, and knocked in four.
W: 8-7
The Tigers were demoralized by a four-run 8th for the Mariners (two were unearned). But George Sherrill gave up a game-tying inside-the-park three run home run to Mark Trumbo. Ryan Braun walked off with a home run that led off the 9th inning.

Division Races
The AL East is up for grabs. The Rays (42-38) lead the Red Sox (42-39) by a 1/2 game. The Yankees (35-45) are in last place by only 7 games.)
The Tigers (75-6), complete with their star-studded lineup (and immense resulting debts and no prospects), have a stranglehold on the AL Central lead. The Indians (42-39), 33 games back but in second place, is a contender for a Wild Card berth.
The AL West is also up for grabs. The Angels (47-36) lead the Rangers (44-36) by only 1 1/2 games. The Mariners (34-46) are slowly but surely fading away.
The Braves (46-35) have a one game lead over the Mets (45-36). The Marlins (44-37) are one game back of the Mets. The Phillies (38-43) and Nationals (37-45) are running out of time to make a difference.
The surprise Astros (46-36) lead the NL Central (I am using MLB 2K12). The Reds (42-40) are only 4 back. The rest of the division is below .500. However, the Cubs (35-46) are celebrating the fact that they aren't in last place!
The NL West is another close race. The Giants (43-37) have a 2 game lead over the Dodgers (41-39). The Padres (37-44), in last place, are only 6 1/2 back of the Giants.
If the Post-Season began today, the Rangers and Indians would win AL Wild Card Berths. The Mets and Marlins would win NL Wild Card berths.
Notable Injuries
Heath Bell (MIA) is just over 2 weeks away from leaving the 60-day DL. He fractured a radius earlier this season.
Jason Bay (NYM), who was having a decent comeback season, will be out for two weeks with Achilles tendinitis.
A bruised hip will sideline Nick Markakis (BAL) for the next two weeks.
Matt Kemp is just a few days away from ending his second DL stint of the season.

Scott Baker thought he could pitch around 3 ER and 11 hits against, but Matt Cain, Mike Minor, and Craig Kimbrel threw a combined shutout. Brian McCann homered in his third straight game.
W: 11-1
Johnny Cueto two-hit the Twins. Edwin Jackson threw too many fastballs and was taken advantage of (4 HR, 8 ER).
W: 13-2
The Tigers clubbed a franchise-record 10 home runs in a single game. Miguel Cabrera had three; both Jerry Sands and David Freese had two. James Shields is still undefeated as a Tiger.

The game was close during the middle innings, but Ike Davis' 7th inning home run, David Freese's 8th inning pinch-hit home run, and Adam Jones' 9th inning home run sealed the deal.
W: 2-0
It was a classic pitcher's duel until Brian McCann clubbed the eventual game-winning home run against his former team. Craig Kimbrel, yet another former Brave, got the save.
W: 10-0
The Tigers had former teammate Jered Weaver figured out from the beginning. Justin Verlander threw a complete game shutout, striking out nine (including Michael Bourn's unprecedented 4 K's).

Justin Verlander pitched 8 strong innings, giving up only one run. The Tigers collected 22 hits as a team. Ryan Braun went 4-6; he stole 2 bases! Adam Jones had 3 hits and 3 runs scored. Howie Kendrick had 4 hits. Miguel Cabrera doubled twice. JJ Hardy was a triple short of the cycle, but he scored thrice and drove in 4.
W: 11-0
Matt Cain pitched a complete game, giving up only 5 hits and striking out 9. Ryan Braun homered on a 3 hit day for him. David Freese tripled, doubled, and scored twice. Mark Trumbo only lacked the single for the cycle!
W: 9-1
Johnny Cueto pitched around 8 hits through 6 innings for his 12th win. Miguel Cabrera, Mark Trumbo, and Adam Jones homered. Collectively, the Tigers mashed out 17 hits, whole the Mets only scored 1 run on 11 hits.

Johnny Cueto is now 11-0. Brett Lawrie went 4-5 with three doubles, driving in four. Ryan Braun went 3-5 with a double and triple and scored thrice. Adam Jones and Miguel Cabrera homered.

James Shields gave up four runs and six hits in the 2nd inning of his Tigers debut, but he gave up nothing else. The bullpen mixed and matched their way to victory. Howie Kendrick hit a game-tying RBI single in the 7th, and Ike Davis soon followed with the game-winning sacrifice fly.
W: 8-2
Doug Fister surrendered a home run to Paul Goldschmidt, but nothing else. Ryan Braun homered again on a 2-3 day. Miguel Cabrera also homered on a 3-4 day.
W: 6-1
Doug Fister gave up only one run on three hits, while striking out 10 in an 8 1/3 inning pitching gem. Jerry Sands went 3-4 with a double and a run scored. Mark Trumbo was also 3-4, doubling, tripling, driving in two, and scoring twice.
W: 6-0
Justin Verlander showed up Stephen Strasburg by two-hitting the Nationals. Brian McCann went 2-4 and drove in two. JJ Hardy hit a 3-run inside-the-park home run.
W: 6-0
Matt Cain struck out 10 and only gave up two hits over seven innings, while Max Scherzer was shelled in his return to the Motor City. Brian McCann brought his batting average above .300 with three hits, including a triple and home run. He drove in two.
