A matchup that had the aspirations of becoming yet another "Game of the Century" failed to occur, as then #3 Nebraska lost last week. Since the #2 at the time (West Virginia) lost as well, we thought that we would see #1 vs. #2 in the regular season.
Anyways, Nebraska looked like they were going to end the Spartans' run after getting to a 14-0 lead. However, Nebraska scored no more because the turnover bug ate them up.

The game was truly a passing spectacle for the Spartans, who debuted a new playbook.
Some outstanding features include the fact that:
There weren't any interceptions thrown today, and Maxwell also completed 83% of his passes. He was not sacked either, though some throws were rushed.
The win was expected, as the intent was for this game to be a warmup to (21) Boise State next week.
Some outstanding features include the fact that:
- Nearly all run plays have a lead blocker.
- There aren't any run plays out of the shoutgun.
- There are a lot of Play Action fakes.
- Most passes are intended to be quick.
- Very few passes need to develop.
- Long passes have routes intended to flood zones or cross, in order to confuse coverages.
- We prefer the "station-to-station" method, seeking long drives and focusing on each 1st down separately.

Transactions
The Tigers trade Edwin Encarnacion, Matt Guerrier, and Damon Johnson to the Cardinals for Michael Morse and Eduardo Sanchez.
Encarnacion tripled his salary over the past year, and with our commitment to getting under budget, we had to trade him. Encarnacion didn't perform fully as expected. If you remember, Morse spent the 1st half of the season with the Tigers. He produced well with a +.300 AVG and more than 20 HR. Guerrier is coming to the end of his career, and Sanchez is an up-and-comer that has proven himself in the NL.
The Tigers trade Jon Lester, Brian Fuentes, and Pedro Valdez to the Reds for Johnny Cueto, Nick Masset, and Larry Burton.
Before Lester's hot streak at the end of the year, he was troublesome. We worried about his command, and he had been rocked on occasion. The organization has decided to stay away from lefty starters forever. Cueto has become more of a lefty-killer than before. Fuentes was set to make $5 million. He didn't perform that well, until the postseason. Masset is expected to blossom later, but he has a relatively high OVR for our bullpen.
The Tigers trade Ryan Doumit and Matt Daley to the Cubs for Wellington Castillo and Claude McCarthy.
Doumit was originally signed to back up Geovany Soto, but Castillo is younger, cheaper, and better defensively. He doesn't hit for contact as well as Doumit, but he will make up for it with power.
The Tigers trade Paul Konerko, Geovany Soto, and Jason Bulger to the Rangers for Mike Napoli, Dave Graham, and Blaine Ford.
Konerko was entering the final year of his contract. His age worries us about his future, and his OVR has already fallen from the past season. Napoli is known for power. He will also share catching duties with Castillo.
The Tigers trade Josh Beckett, Luke French, and Harry Fernandez to the Rockies for Jhoulys Chacin, Rickie Gaub, and Casey Parker.
Beckett was getting expensive, and Chacin has promising potential. He can start now, but he will likely be a 4th or 5th guy. We aren't worried about the rotation, so we took the deal and hope things will turn out as expected.
As a result, for the 1st time in 2 seasons, the Tigers are under budget. That was our goal, and we will hopefully stick to it. Our top 10 salaries* account for 85% of the team's MLB payroll. As a result, we have more than half of the team accounting for only 15%!

Miguel Cabrera* is the World Series MVP.
*In my opinion, the title should belong to Justin Verlander. He only gave up 1 run and 10 hits over 18 innings. That was 2 complete games.

World Series Game 4 @ MIA
Everything went right for the Tigers, and the wheels fell off of the Marlins late. Justin Verlander pitched phenomenally on short rest. He had everyone on their seats as he retired the batting order twice, in short order. The Marlins' 1st hit came in the 7th, when Jose Reyes singled to right-center. He had 2 of the Marlins' 3 hits.
There was no scoring until the 7th, thanks to Ricky Nolasco. Then he proceeded to give up 6 runs over his final 2 innings. Steve Cishek finished things off by giving up the last 4.
There were 14 hits for the Tigers, 6 were doubles, and Adam Jones and Miguel Cabrera homered.

World Series Game 3 @ MIA
Well, the Tigers continued to beat up on lefties today, and Mark Buehrle exited before the 3rd inning was over! He gave up 3 in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd, and 2 in the 3rd. Former teammate Paul Konerko homered as part of the offensive output.
Edward Mujica is unavailable if Ricky Nolasco is given the hook early tomorrow. Thanks to the travel day of rest yesterday, Justin Verlander is ready to pitch the potential World Series winning game!
Nolasco, an All Star, has been a true surprise this season. For now, he is the Marlins' last hope. Game 4 is tomorrow.

World Series Game 2 vs. MIA
As we entered Game 2, the focus was on the effect that pitching would have. Once again, we expected few runs with both Anibal Sanchez and Josh Beckett starting. Coming in, Josh Beckett had not lost as a Tiger. However, he has had the benefit of some no-decisions.
Tigers fans were worried, as yet another Marlin ace was carving up batters. The first run was scored in the 6th when Hunter Pence slugged a solo shot to left.
After an innocent leadoff single in the 7th by Giancarlo Stanton, the middle of the Marlins lineup went on a tear, rattling off multiple hits and taking a 3-1 lead.
After posting consecutive hits (and an RBI) to start the bottom of the 7th, a double play wiped out the rest.
The 8th was treacherous, as Jose Reyes doubled down the line, but he was stranded.
Off Juan Carlos Oviedo, the Tigers rallied with 2 outs in the 8th to take a 4-3 lead. Miguel Cabrera struck out to end the inning, leaving a baserunner that almost haunted the Tigers.
John Axford came on in the 9th. With two outs, John Buck hit a ground-rule double. With 2 strikes, Adalberto Brach grounded another double down the line. John Axford blew the save.
Trouble brewed, with two outs (once again), for the Tigers in the bottom of the 9th. Oviedo was pulled for Steve Cishek, who surrendered a triple to Ian Kinsler. Pinch-hitter Mark Trumbo was intentionally walked. On a 1-2 pitch, the next batter, Geovany Soto, walked off with a single to short right.
The Tigers escaped, and they will head to New Marlins Park for the first time in franchise history. They bring a 2-0 lead with them...

World Series Game 1 vs. MIA
Coming into the game, there were a lot of unknowns. This is expected, considering the fact that this is an interleague matchup.
Few runs were expected as Josh Johnson and Justin Verlander took the mound. However, the Tigers manufactured more than usual with productive outs, including 2 sacrifice flies.
Josh Johnson was extremely effective as a result. (He also got a lot of groundball outs.) However, more runs than he wished found their way on the board.
So far, Andre Ethier is the best candidate for World Series MVP. He homered and drove in 2. But, if Verlander gets another start, we can add him in as well.
