Yeah, the next hammer was likely about to fall. Might as well bow out and let Triple H/Stephanie take control instead of doing irreparable damage to the brand.

Probably should have done this after the first one. By sticking around, making pointless appearances in the face of the story on TV and carrying on business as usual in creative and the fact WWE pretty much IS Vince, the brand is still gonna take a hit with whatever comes out if it's in a couple days or so. This will just look like a reactionary move instead of doing what was right before hand.
