It doesn't feel, react, or look anything like basketball.

This is what happens when you get "full control" of everything on court. When player ratings are set aside and user control is completely given, then you have a game where everyone plays the same, and you have stats that are terribly inflated. My goodness, I think I had 7 blocks in that 5 minute quarter alone playing on AllStar. Steals shoot out of hands. Mid air collisions look like mid air convulsions. In fact, people refer to 2K as canned animations...so I will refer to Elite as "mid air convulsions". I like it.

Basically, the game is all over the place. It's like some altered reality of NBA basketball. It feels like 2003 when combined with the commentary and sounds as well. However, it was fun. I played the demo about 10 times and it intrigued me. If you're someone who really cares about a game being as realistic as possible, then this game should be nowhere on your list. I really don't think they can balance their physics and realism...something has to give, and after playing Elite, I completely see why 2K decided to leave some canned 2 player animations in the game. It just confirms that they are needed.

I was explaining the physics engine to an online friend, and I think I got it down. Basically, the animations are much shorter than in 2K's, which allows for more control. Think of NBA Today on 2K10. The commentary is done by splicing short bits of words and then placed together to form a sentence. It makes the game sound a bit robotic. The animations feel the same way in Elite. It's like a bunch of extremely short animations that splice together and forms what we see, which is insanity because players are flying around and wigging out all over the place.

Can the game be fun? Yes...I think it would be a fun game against a friend on a good drinking night. It has a lot of unintentional laugh out loud moments...kinda like a poorly scipted b-horror flick...it sucks, but it makes you keep watching and makes you laugh. That is Elite to me.
Has nothing to do with your opinion, but you, sir, have a VERY good eye for detail.

Based on the outcome, you play a success/fail/call a foul animation.

In Elite, the player hand is an actual object. If the hand touches the ball, another object being tracked, it pops loose and RTP take over. There is no animation based on the dice roll. If this same hand hits the other players body or hand, a foul should be called.

This was my understanding of it.
It's just not a good system, it results in FAR too many turnovers. You're essentially baiting people into spamming the steal function (not really a button anymore) since all you have to do is make your player model make some sort of contact on the ball, with no regards to either player's abilities at all.

I know it's supposed to make it more dynamic and "skill based" but it just feels wrong/broken. Steals should be based on the defensive players abilitiy, the offensive players ball security (ball handling rating, ball security rating, etc) and the gamer's timing.

The competition has a pretty decent version of this system in their game this year, and it sure feels dynamic and skill based to get poke steals and rips in traffic. The more skilled user who makes timely reaches with the right defenders will be more successful 10/10 times.

Ripping Rondo with Bynum is completely ridiculous, but easily doable in Elite 11. Please.

I remain baffled by the decision making process that went into creating this game. They just keep insulting every fan with a high basketball IQ. I'm starting to feel like I wasn't their target demographic with this game, which is ridiculous as a die hard NBA fan.

I don't agree. I think this system can work, but it has to be tested well. Fouls have to be called and the ball handler needs to have the ability to avoid the steals. If there are too many turnovers that just means something is out of balance and needs to be tweaked.

I have only played the demo for one night so I can't comment on whether it's out of balance or not. Based on my first night against the computer I didn't notice any problems. I played on all-star and when the CPU got a steal it felt legit.

edit: (Stealing the ball from the cpu seems legit to me. When ever i try to reach with the hand that they have the ball in they quickly switch ball hands with a between the legs dribble, cross, etc.) The only time the cpu steals the ball from me is when i have it exposed to them. For example trying to dribble left with the ball in my right hand. And i seen comments say that the cpu reaches to much. but the only time i have seen the cpu reach is when i have the ball exposed to them like in the example above.

Yea it needs work also like ratings should play apart more for instance the higher a players steal rating is the faster his hand will be. But i do like the concept and is another thing about elite thats going in the right direction. Their was one time the gasol had the ball at the top of the key. i was on rondo on falling fisher. fisher ran by gasol like he was cutting to the basket. following fisher i attempted a steal on gasol because we was coming from behind him and i knocked the ball out. it was like he never say it coming

Re: NBA Elite 11 Demo Available, Post Impressions Here (PS3, 360)

I think I'm still going to pick this game up. I've come to grips with the many flaws of it because of the feel of having control of everything I do. Although I knew this was a multiple year project, going in, I was a bit flabbergasted by what I initially saw with the 5 v 5 and couldn't believe that EA couldn't have taken at least another year to give us a game fully ready for the big show. Unfortunately, capitalism rules the land even at the sake of quality and care of people yet in still, I still can't help but like this game. It gives me something that 2K just can't get together - Control...but 2K11 is still ending up a purchase on day one along with this game.
