Re: 2014-15 Hot Stove League Thread

Just a thought, if the Cubs/Upton rumor has any legs to it. Maybe we swap bad contracts, sending them Edwin and get BJ in addition to Justin.

BJ makes $14M, $15M and $16M over the next three, while Jackson is at $11. Right now, I'm thinking that I don't want anything to do with BJ. I guess that I feel the same way about Edwin though. The only way I'd support it is if it meant Atlanta would take less and thank us for ridding them of BJ.

Still, there's a lot of "what ifs" and the better Upton still has to agree to be traded to the Cubs for any of this to happen. Kind of Thinking out loud here.

In principle, I could see a deal like that happening. E-Jax is owed $26MM over the next 2 years and BJ is owed $46.4MM over the next 3 years. I don't think 1 year of Justin Upton is worth the excess $20MM we'd be taking on unless we were definitely going to lock him up and if we thought BJ had something left in the tank that's untapped in Atlanta. In other words, there'd have to be something else the Braves bring to the table to make this work. I wonder if Atlanta would be interested in Welington Castillo if they are trying Gattis all around the diamond or trading him.

The other issue with that is Upton in LF closes a spot on the diamond for Bryant/Schwarber to migrate to. That makes the idea seem a bit odd.

Good for the Cubs and Lester getting this done. I admire Lester taking less than he could have gotten from San Francisco to go where he truly wanted to be.

I'm tired of hearing about BJ Upton. The Braves ****ed over with that contract, it was bad the minute it was signed and you could see it a mile away. I don't think there will be any lifesavers, Braves are gonna have to eat it.

Jeff Passan @JeffPassan The San Francisco Giants were willing to go seven years, somewhere in the neighborhood of $168 million for Jon Lester. He took less money.

Giants never did offer a seventh year, but there was an understanding that if Lester indicated he wanted SF, Giants would be at seven ~$168.

Come on San Fran panic and overpay for Scherzer. LA goes for Shields in response. Boston is left out of the FA game.
