Are you sure Greinke or Soria won't accept arbitration? I didn't get picks for Felipe Lopez because he accepted arbitration most of the time I offered it in my trial runs.

I would probably keep at least one of your pitchers as trade bait. I always like to have someone decent to throw out in a trade at midseason, when it's more obvious what your needs are. I could use someone like that now to pick up another starting pitcher.

I'd look at a trade, unless you've done a good job of scouting. The draft can be a bit of a crapshoot

Your only option then would be to cut him or like you say, move him with a manual trade.
Oh ok. My bad. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I'm in early May as the Padres and both Jason Bartlett and Alberto Gonzalez have gone down with injuries (Bartlett 2-3 months, Gonzalez 1-2 months) so I placed both on the 60 day DL and brought up Everth Cabrera who hasn't produced anything, so I went out and traded for a replacement.

Padres trade RP Chad Qualls and C Jason Hagerty for Orioles SS J.J. Hardy.

I trade from my strength in the bullpen and Hagerty just as insurance the trade goes through for a reliable SS who currently is hitting .312 way better than even Bartlett was producing.

My next issue is Maybin, my team is in first place (somehow) and he just is not producing. Batting .167 with 0 HR. How long should I wait until I start shopping for outfield help? I called up Cedric Hunter who is batting .323 in AAA but struggled earlier in the MLB season. My thoughts are maybe move Venable to Center and possible call up Kyle Blanks or shop for a corner outfielder, since I feel they are easier to come by. Possibly try for Corey Hart, Josh Willingham. I just worry about trading away the farm for a big bat.

In my test runs so far, everyone save Pena declines arbitration, and he is a type B free agent so that makes sense. I also have a guy named Brad Kilby that is up for his last arbitration. I am going to non tender him because I have lost two straight hearings, one for $1.8 mil and the last for $3.2 mil. He is not worth $3.2 much less any kind of raise. Besides, on 10 you get draft picks if you non tender a guy and he gets signed. Kilby gets listed as type A, so I get two picks for him and someone always picks him up. I think I will keep Anderson at least and try to trade him since his trade value is enormous. I have a spreadsheet of all the top prospects that have been drafted since I started so I should be able to look through that and get some talent back for him. Still on the fence with Bailey, especially after that blown save in the world series and the fact that he has a fake face. He is really good though. Plus I can get great trade value out of a closer.

The draft is much less of a crap shoot after 5 seasons. Pretty much every player has been thoroughly scouted at this point. New guys will come in that were never able to be scouted, but not so many that I can't get them taken care of by June. I agree with you though about trading. I can get 3 solid prospects, a solid veteran, or any combination of the two rather than just two draft picks.

Hardy is a free agent at the end of the year, correct? I like that move from your perspective and it gives you flexibility when Bartlett comes back. Maybe one of them can move to second base if Hudson is not producing or dealt at the deadline for a more pressing need.

Regarding the outfield, I would be very cautious in trading for a power guy who will not hit for a great average because of how difficult Petco is on power hitters. Hart makes more sense to me than does Willingham, but it could be worth exploring a possibility like Delmon Young who will give you some pop for the rest of the year as you try and stay in the race heading towards the playoffs. He shouldn't cost a whole lot and is in a contract year, so if things don't work out you can cut ties at the end of the season Carlos Quentin might be worth a look as well if the White Sox are not contending, though he would obviously cost you a blue-chip prospect and might not stay in San Diego after the season.

Re: **All Trades Discussion Thread** 2011 Edition

When is it time to give up on a rookie being ready?

Fredi Freeman for me isn't doing anything, all contact is little dribblers, no matter how good contact should be. The rest of my guys are hitting close to thier real life average.

I know he is the starter in real life, but I win more when I let hinske start at first.

I'm not completely sure about JJ Hardy's contract but I am pretty satisfied with Hudson and Bartlett up the middle, however if Hudson does seem to fall off, I can see where I move Hardy to second and shop Hudson around. The Maybin situation is rough, he is extremely young, yet I don't want to waste his talent in AAA while he gets his swing back. I see where a power bat isn't a good idea seeing how PETCO plays. I think around July, if this situation continues, I'll take flyers on Coco, Delmon, Quentin, and Hart. Possibly try for Michael Cuddyer, Luke Scott, or Johnny Gomes. I can afford to trade a big pitching prospect because looking at my organization now the future rotation it is: Latos, Stauffer, Kelly, Castro, and I will always have one inning eating veteran, that leaves Luebke, Sampson, Lollis, and plenty of other arms available.
