Re: MLB '10: The Show Official Team Ratings and Explanation

Don't forget that in Russel's posts, he mentioned that the ratings they used for ranking are not only based on the previous three years, but that last year's stats play a larger part in those ratings. As a result, if players had an unusually great year last year it will result in a higher ranking for the team they are now on. Some things that just can't be mathematically calculated are team chemistry, injury recovery, etc. Plus, I don't believe they used team-vs-team ratings or player versus pitchers they are likely to see ratings. These are all based upon the players' overall stats from the past years (with last year being weighted more) in a "bubble" of sort. So if a certain team tends to play VERY well against another team historically, it doesn't mean that they would be ranked higher because those team-vs-team stats don't really count.

So for those who are wondering why x-team is ranked above y-team, take a look at all of the players on the team and what their actual stats were last year. Don't go into it using a "well so-and-so was injured so his stats will be better this year" mentality since that really means nothing. If the Yankees still had Chien Ming-Wang on their roster, their pitching stats would be far worse because he got lit up while pitching hurt in the begginning of last year. Same thing with Dice-K. His performance while injured hurt his statistics last year which play a big role in the Sox' ranking this year. I think if we were to go to BaseballReference.com and get the stats from the past few years for all players on the rosters, then perform similar calculations to what I'm guessing SCEA used, we'd see the same rankings.

An example is the Indians roster. They are ranked last because last year, the players who are on the SCEA roster didn't have any really good seasons. Yes you have Hafner back, but what stats did he put up last year? Those are the ones that count the most, hence why they are ranked low. Why are the Yankees' pitching ranked 1st? Well, Sabbathia, Burnett, Pettite and Vazquez had great years last year. Also, Rivera, Hughes, Chamberlin, Aceves, Robertson, etc. had good/great years as well. So those good numbers combine to give the Yankees a high pitching rating. With the Mets, I believe that the fielders they did add, and those who are not injured this year, have better defensive numbers than we first think, so they are ranked up there defensively.

I like these rankings and especially the way they are figured out. Of course, the things that really play into how good a team is just can't be figured out on paper, hence why they play the game. Pitchers and catchers reported today, so spring training has begun.

Re: MLB '10: The Show Official Team Ratings and Explanation

I think these ratings are fair, of course they're a comparison of one team to the rest of the league.

The Padres defense at 30, a little lower than I expected, but understandable when you have Matt Stairs on the bench and players who are definitely question marks at certain positions (Headley going back to third, Blanks in LF, Gwynn, Eckstein, E-Cab).

It's funny, goes to show that even having a gold glove first basemen, you can still find yourself in the bottom of league in terms of ratings if the other guys are chopped liver.

For those crying about the Marlins. Marlins had 4 starters last year with an era close to 5 or higher. The closer had an era of 4. That isn't very good pitching in the NL East. That is the only explanation I can think of.

Too many cry babies and bias in this thread. Cardinals are ranked low because even though the top is great they have zero depth. They also play in the worst division in baseball.

His post included that he'd take the White Sox rotation over any team except the Red Sox and Yankees, so there is no need for the Yankees rotation to say hello to him when he's already acknowledged that fact.

Edit: Here is an example of jumping the gun and not reading all the posts!
