Re: Madden NFL 10 Blog: Player Ratings - A New Philosophy, A New Era

Donny & Ian-

What I'd like to propose for the elite players only (players with a 90+ rating) is a ratings group-scale grade system that will perserve superstar playmaking ability...while at the same time making the style of play more unique for each individual athlete, and also subject the elite players to average & even below average performances at times. You can do this by using the non-position specific ratings.

Here's how it works...

Ratings will be grouped like this...

SPD
STR
AWR

ACC
FAT
SPC (spectatular move)

AGL
TGH (toughness)
INJ (injury)

Now, all you do is add the number ratings in each ratings group respectively and divide by three to get the avg. That average for each group would be the players elite grade.

Example: An average of 73 for AGL, TGH, & INJ would grade out to be a C. Well, this type of player should wear down and have nagging injuries that hinder his play late in the season & into the playoffs.

Example: An average of 79 for ACC, FAT, SPC would grade out to be a C. Well, this player won't make big plays late in games because he is less explosive, tired, and not as spectacular. If you call a timeout rest him for a few plays then put him back in...he'll recover.

The higher the avg the better the player will play in the 4th qtr or in OT.

so on...so on...

any thoughts on this idea?

I totally agree...we played bad football after week 4...even when we won we were not playing well.

This is something that I think is a big part of the problem. No offense to Phillip. He is a good QB but people coming on here and complaining about their teams QB getting what should be a pro bowl rating like that is an insult to the player. EA in the past seemed to play to these comments by raising the ratings for every player until they were all really highly rated. Derek Anderson was a great example of this. He had a good season last year but really dropped off at the end and showed some weaknesses to the point where it seemed obvious, to me anyway, that he would drop off this season. Most of the people on NFL network seemed to agree with me as I watched their preseason shows. Tom Brady is another great example. He had one season throwing to Moss and all of a sudden his arm strength is up from low 90s which is to high for him up to being among the top in the league. This had nothing to do with his arm all of a sudden getting stronger. He still has a moderate to even weak arm in terms of strength. He makes up for it with great accuracy and decision making but that doesn't mean his arm is incredibly strong.

They also seem to be against the idea of lowering ratings. LT for example has been dropping off for the past couple seasons and has maintained the 99 overall rating. Before this thing about adjusting ratings I would have expected him to be a 99 again this year.

He was already 93 in the last madden 09 update, so they knew he was having a down year. They kept him at 99 for a while thinking he would rebound and never did. Thus justifying his 93 overall. He can't justify dropping someone for a bad streak of games, but after a while you have to drop them and this was the case with LT.

As an example, if Peyton goes down and Sorgi comes in...oh boy. You better get that run game going.
Ian,

I love the sound of the changes. Your last remark forced me to respond.

The quality of depth would really improve the franchise experience of madden as well. The offseason fa period instantly becomes more realistic and important. But one thing I feel needs to be included again is the injury slider. Injuries needs to happen more often so please include the injury slider again so that the casual and sim gamer can tweak the amount and severity of the injuries to their liking.

And do not get me startet on nagging injuries. I would really like to see injuries carried over from week to week. That would result in some interesting choices to be made during the season. Should I play my injured star and risk a serios injury or play the rookie backup with a lower skill set and rest my star so he heals completely. Qulity of depth again comes into account...

Progression.

Will this be a problem? Will you attempt to limit certain ratings from going up or down? Nice to see all the changes, but I would hate to have, for example, a WR go up in speed by 15.

In all seriousness though, Sorgi > Cassel, so you can still air it out
