The problem I have with the first trilogy is that it was too comedic and hokey. I realize that Peter Parker is a smart *** but he wasn't even that in the films. He was just pathetic and one-dimensional. Spider-Man 2 is about the closest they came to a good balance but 1 and 3 were the extremes.

We may find that a serious Spider-Man will do better to convey the comedy behind the character. When things aren't being taken seriously, it only forces writers to be even more hokey than before (see: Spider-Man 3). If the tone is dark then Peter Parker can shine by bringing the audience back to some well-timed relief with a smart *** line or two.

I can agree with you about 3. It just annoys me when I see it being replayed so much (but the action scenes with Osbourne were still some of the best).

But one and two provided the best balance I would have expected from a film. I can see what you're saying in terms of Maguire's portrayal of Peter Parker (at times!) but his portrayal of Spiderman was incredible IMO.

Just think back to how great Maguire was when he first learned of his powers. When he started running on rooftops... Ha, I laugh just thinking about his silly grin and "Yahooooooooooo!".

His acting followed the source material very well.

I guess if you're going to reboot, you should go in a different direction.

Nolan's Batman is a different direction from Tim Burton's Batman. I rather see a different Spider-Man film than the ones we saw previously.

I don't mind Spidey in a darker setting but there's a fine balance between beign so dark that you pull the character down into that grittiness and being too over the top. I agree with CMH that putting Spidey in a darker milieu will allow for the quips to come off better. The best Spider-Man stories are the ones when all hell is breaking loose and he diffuses the tension by being funny at just THE right moment.

I think people already realize that mood.

The image posters from S3 depicted that same sort of "gloom" and that's the direction they went with. It's all just talk at this point. What else do you expect people to discuss here? Checkers?

I just don't expect people to overanalyze based on one picture but of course, this is the Internet so I guess I had my expectations too high.
