I agree, from a pure comedy standpoint that movie should've been gangbusters but it was a pretty big hit from what I recall and was shown on TV quite a lot after it left the theatres. It was Chase's apex as a star and at the same time it was the harbinger of things to come.

I've heard a lot about that Under the Rainbow movie though I haven't seen it. It has an interesting cast but i'm not sure if was any great shakes. The setting (a hotel in WW II era LA) and the plot makes it sound like a screwball comedy in the tradition of movies of the period.

Dream of a Rarebit Fiend

Ach! Thee pictures! Zey move! I guess 7 minutes passed as a full movie in 1906. The part where his furniture walked away was pretty good but there wasn't much to it. Good special effects for something that's 107 years old, couldn't see strings or anything.

Question: Steve Martin or Chevy Chase (going by movies alone)?

Tough choice. Both have some good movies and some damn bad ones. I'm gonna have to go with Chevy Chase based off the strength of Christmas Vacation.

Savages

My kinda flick. Lots of violence, sex, drugs, and organized crime. Story doesn't have much substance to it but still a fun watch.

it's a toss up really, I'd say Martin edges Chevy out for the fact that Martin has written some of his movies and Martin was able to branch out into more dramatic or at the very least dramedic roles. I get the sense that Chevy is pretty much playing the same kind of character whereas Martin has been able to stretch himself out as an actor with movies like Roxanne, All of Me, and LA Story. You have to remember when Martin first blazed onto the trail he was ONLY a slapstick comedian who was just a "wild n' crazy guy" but he developed into someone who can put depth into his performances and has done comedy that doesn't necessarily hinge on slapstick alone.

I also think that while the output is generally on the same par as Chase there hasn't been that many highs and lows in terms of quality. So I guess it all depends on who you like more.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Chase had brilliance in Christmas Vacation, Fletch, and Caddyshack.

But Martin gets the nod from me for this A vs B, based on the breadth of his work.

I'm a huge fan of 'Bowfinger', but he was also great in "All of Me". I also liked and kinda connected with his George Banks character in the 'Father of the Bride' movies.

He ruled as The Dentist in 'Little Shop of Horrors' just for his intro song LOL

Yep. That was released, I believe, in 1986, a year or so after Fletch. Christmas Vacation was his swan song in terms of being relevant in film.

Choosing between Chase and Martin is very tough. I'd go with Chevy but that's certainly no slight to Martin, who like SPTO said, has shown more range as an actor.
