Improving The Franchise Mode in NBA 2k

One thing I love about NBA 2K8 is the way the game plays on the court. One thing I hate about NBA 2k8 is, the franchise mode. The franchise mode has been stale for years now, which seems to be a trend in most next generation sports games. Companies are so focused on graphics, gameplay, and online play that they neglect an entire sect of their customers who love flying solo. The best way to cater to this group of gamers is to give them a more in-depth franchise mode.

My major gripe with the mode in NBA 2K8 is that it seems to have no drama or story lines. It gives some news updates regarding unhappy players (which essentially means nothing but a couple points off their attributes), injuries, and big wins by certain teams -- but who even really pays attention to that?

What I want is a weekly recap show à la SportsCenter with some key highlights and a review of standings and power rankings. That would give me a better sense of what’s going on around the league. It could include a host and a couple analysts who evaluate trades and players of the week and such, of course using generic dialogue lines -- any dialogue is better than none. I’m sure 2K could throw a bone to the GTA voice-over guys; I hear they’re looking for some extra money these days.

Another thing that needs to be addressed is the morale system. It needs to have a bigger influence on gameplay and franchise decisions than it presently does. The NBA is full of drama; from Kobe wanting out of LA early in the year and now claiming his team is like family, to the phantom migraine escapade from Jason Kidd. 2K should add drama to the franchise and intertwine it with morale on an individual and team basis. What happened to the Association Mode that was introduced in NBA 2K5? It wasn’t perfect, but it was a step in the right direction. Players would enter the GM office and ask questions, and the responses would dictate the player’s attitude after they left. The mode could be revised so that when a player leaves unhappy I could get an e-mail about how he spoke to a media outlet and vented his frustration. Then, as the GM, I would have to approach the player and try to work things out, which if unsuccessful could lead to a trade, head coach firing, or any other sorts of outcomes.

Speaking of coaching change, why is it that the coaching system in general has not changed in years either? Not only is there no incentive to ever change the head coach of my team since it’s expensive to buy some no name coach with the same exact ratings as the one you presently have, but I never even see head coaches fired in the game. It seems about every year in real life there are at least three or four coaches fired, so it would only make sense to have that take place in the franchise mode.

Coaching should also influence the way a team plays. It should not be an option to change sliders and affect crashing the boards or playing more transition offense. That should be dictated by the head coach, which would make the decision as to who to hire based on the personnel. If I want to change the way the team plays I should then have to meet with whoever I have manning the ship and request him to change up the style of play. The better the relationship with the coach, the easier it is to get things done the way I want.

The last thing I would address is the scouting. Not that it’s terrible, in fact it feels pretty good as is, but it still feels like it's missing something. At first, there’s no real indicator in terms of who you should be scouting. I wish there were newspaper clippings, even if just a couple generic headlines to get a sense of what kind of player the kid is. If the team is in need of a big body in the paint who can give some energy and lay down a couple dunks, the scouts could go look at a player with the headline, “Mike dunks home the championship!” It could just be a little something to help differentiate the player early on in addition to the generic letter grades.

NBA 2K8’s franchise mode has tons of potential, and I want to see it blossom in all its glory, but as of now I only think of what could have been. I need more from all franchise modes in all sports games I play. The player needs to feel more immersed in whatever virtual sports world the video game is trying to represent. There needs to be highlights, drama, headlines, firings, and trades out of frustration. So please 2K, I promise I won't berate you for not improving the A.I. of the halftime cheerleaders if it means I get a better experience within the franchise mode.

Definately need a change in the Association. Some things haven't been touched for years, like coaching.

my thoughts exactly. I don't plan on getting NBA 2k9 if you can't import the draft class. I will only get it if the game has been greatly improved and it is a must buy.

Right now I am playing choops and NBA 2k8 and enjoying itl. I am in my 4th season. I import rookies from choops and I can honestly say it keeps both games fresh and entertaining.

Nicely put. This game would be so much better with some personality. A stale association has been going on too long. I hope we are not let down. I have been in years past with the association.

Yes, I imagine they'll allow you to import ch2k8 draft classes in. I'm hoping we can delete old draft classes for the first time in a few years, because I'm having trouble which ones are which.

I agree with everyone in dealing with franchise mode, the practices while interesting doesn't really add any depth to the game.

I would rather have a create-a-play mode or hell, have a scouting section for the upcoming game.

I just said that I don't like the highlight show in College Hoops because, as the coach of Long Island (who?), I don't feel the need to check out the top teams in the NCAA, the ones always in the highlight show, because I will never face any of them. At that stage, it's all about recruiting and trying to get through your first few years, and that's how I would feel about it starting up in NBA 2K9 as well. They can put it in, but at least have a way to turn off reminders for those who would rather use the time practicing plays or something (if available).

I mentioned the press and interviews because, like it said in the article, there needs to be more to affect chemistry than "My client's not getting enough minutes." It would be more like NBA 2K5 as someone mentioned, or also MVP Baseball 2005 where the press would sometimes send e-mails. Right now the 2K Messenger is all about injuries and people on the trading block... maybe have more interactions with the owner? I mention these because you can control them, unlike a highlight show, and that adds to the experience more, I would assume.

I never said it makes you less of a gamer. I said that the 2K Forums, a lot of people ask for it, most of them ****** gamers. That doesn't mean that in-depth players won't like it, but wouldn't you rather have something that you can control? I just don't see the need, especially because in College Hoops, it is never relevant to my gameplan to see the highlights of teams I never face.

Additionally, I don't see how everyone complains that it would take too much space to add pre-game introductions but they insist upon a weekly highlight show, which would take up MUCH more space and time.

Nor am I an elitist, and please, I started coming to these forums because people were not quick to jump down your throat with petty name-calling. I thought that the community was, in general, above that sort of thing. Also, don't make comments about me as a person if you disagree with my ideas. Even on the Internet you should exercise respect.

i agree. i think that since this online gaming age has come about that people like us have been forgotten. i play online but i more so fly dolo. i think maybe we need to start a message board on 2k forums to see if we can get in contact with a community leader so that this could change. i dont want to be left out in the dust again.

I think 2K should add the option of editing contracts for rookies and for current players. the NBDL idea wouuld be a great idea and have young talent fill out he roster when some of the teams is on the IR. 2k should also modify the ai on the associatin mde fr trading. every year that i start an association i hav to turn off cpu trades bc they make some crazy deal that in ral life would not happen. finally, the last two things 2k should implement in 2k9 is during the association there should be roster updates as they occur in real time & during the draft there should be trades. other than that, i agree with all of your ideas

# 29 Jmoo890 @ 07/01/08 01:58 AM
I have a couple of issues with the association mode in 2k8. In 2k9 they need to add more aspects to make it feel like you really are the GM of the team and a fan at the same time. For example, to make you really feel like the GM they should let you have exit interviews with players, press conference when a blockbuster trade is pulled off. When a player is unhappy to come into your office and have a discussion about the issue. Now this really annoyed me, Not every player that is rated over 90 should have a no trade clause. I thought that was just Kobe not JO, J.Kidd, Baron Davis, Tmac etc. To make you feel as a fan at the same time you are playing GM if the team isn't performing well the local papers or media should criticize your work as GM. There should be a TNT pre half and post game kind of thing where Kenny, Charles and Erine talk about the game. They should also do a TNT overtime thing at the end of the week to recap the week. They should also let u import the draft class from college hoops 2k9 or whatever 2k9 college game is called so you don't feel crappy when the season is over waiting for 2k10 to come out.

I agree. Recently, I have just finished my first season with the Nuggets and went through all the off-season stuff and to be honest ... it wasnt very exciting at all.

# 31 Ceothachosen1 @ 07/02/08 10:12 AM
we need to be able to sigh our own free agents when we are over the cap and renogiate contracts during the season

# 32 Kully @ 07/02/08 02:22 PM
I'd like the user to be on the same playing field as the cpu when it comes to signing free agents.

What I mean by this is that when you try and sign anyone on the free agent list, and the interest bar is below or near 70-75%, the user's contract offer gets immediately rejected. But when you view the offers other teams give that same player, the interest bar for the CPU is sometimes at 50% or 25%, and the player will accept the deal. Watching the CPU sign someone for half of what you are offering and at a worse role kinda sucks.

Honestly I really couldn't disagree more with all you guys who are saying Association Mode is stale. That's what's gotten me attached to NBA 2K is the franchise. It's the best I've ever played. And I think whoever says Live 08's Dynasty is better must be smoking. The salary cap system is perfect so you can always improve your team versus in NBA Live, where players would always ask for 60 million and be impossible to sign. I love the system of working out your draft prospects, the trading system works well, I love development drills, managing the morale and rotation is challenging yet fun ... I think everything is great. Sure, it can be improved on, but I'd rather them not change it drastically and mess up a good thing.

But I'm not complaining on them looking to improve it. I think things that can be improved on are:

-The free agent concerns people have, although I think 2K's free agent system is the best and shouldn't be tampered with too much, are legit. It does seem the cpu has more freedom than the user as far as signing guys for worse deals. I think a system similar to Madden could maybe be developed, where they're interest is sparked based in a situation, and a player has certain 'attributes' that they're looking for in a team: concerns could be money, whether or not the team is a contender, how big the market is, etc.

-For scheduling team practices, I've always just hit 'no through simulation' as otherwise I think it's a waste to consume time. But having practices could be made interesting, if the player could actually play them, similar to the coaching development drills. Maybe practices could be a scrimmage or drills, and depending on how the user does, the players get more out of it.

-I'd love to see the game run with the whole USA Basketball and FIBA gimmick like Live tried and failed to do. The best way to do this would be to adapt it into the franchise, where players are chose to try out for the team, and if one of your players is selected you put him through the workouts which decides if he's selected. Then in the offseason you play in the tournaments.

-A lot of things people have mentioned about real coaches and a SportsCenter show ala College Hoops are nice ideas too.

-I think if in any way the NBA D-League was adapted into the game, where in your association you could scout players from it or bump your players down there to develop....It would be amazing.

Tebow, I was agreeing with you up until you said the trading system works well

# 35 amoney374 @ 06/21/09 12:56 PM
make the franchise were you can jump into games at any time

# 36 Guggy107 @ 06/22/09 12:41 AM
association mode could be hugely improved just by making the draft classes and generated rookies better. im okay with the way the actual season plays, and even free agency is done fairly well.

one other thing they need to do is keep the players attributes available to you permanently once youve used a scouting report on them. but make it so that the attributes are not updated, so if it has been 3 seasons since youve scouted, say, greg oden, and you want to see how his attributes have changed, youd have to scout him again. its annoying that you have to keep scouting players over and over again.
