Where Does NHL Go From Here?

Now that we've had a substantial amount of time to digest NHL 17 and its pros and cons, we're getting a bigger picture of what the OS community thinks about it. The general perception is a favorable one, with many praising the vast array of positives while ensuring the handful of negatives are also well documented.

Today, we'll focus on those negatives and discuss some areas we'd particularly like the folks at EA to focus on moving forward.

AI Improvements

We say it every year: The AI needs to be better. It's not that we've been denied important upgrades on a year-by-year basis, but there's still work to be done. This is particularly prominent in AI-heavy modes like EASHL, where instances of poor decision-making can ruin the experience. Irritations include everything from teammates getting stuck behind the net to making inappropriate passes, occasionally derailing the enjoyment of the mode.

It's not that the AI is generally bad, though. There are times when it truly shines, making plays that wouldn't have been possible in past iterations. It's easy to take the good stuff for granted, but until the bad stuff is nullified for good, we'll continue to rant until our typing hands are sore.

"...What Just Happened?"

If you find yourself uttering the words "...what just happened?" or a more expletive-ridden version of the same statement, it can signify a game-breaking issue. No one likes to be cheated out of a victory, especially when the game's mechanics are at fault. The so-called "Authentic Goaltending" of this year's iteration results in some great saves from time-to-time, but netminders still let in the easiest of goals when failing to adapt in awkward scenarios.

Puck control is another aspect that could do with some fine-tuning. Puck pickups aren't always as effective as they arguably should be, and players sometimes inexplicably dangle their way through a defensive setup that can't check, poke or block oncoming attacks effectively enough.

Presentation

There's nothing particularly wrong with the way NHL 17 handles presentation. If we hadn't sampled most of it before, we'd be largely thrilled with this year's offerings. But, as it is, there's a feel of deja vu about the experience. It could lead to a tinge of regret in those who struggle to see the difference between this and last year's iteration from a visual perspective.

After three years on current-gen systems with a similar presentation format throughout, a change is needed. It doesn't have to be dramatic, and even a change to pre-faceoff cutscenes would have a massive effect on the way games are perceived. And, differentiating between how each game is covered based on the type of contest taking place (NHL, AHL, World Cup Of Hockey, etc.) would offer more variety and immersion across the series' set of modes.

However, if we have to sit through another year of unskippable "let's go down to the benches" scenes with Ray Ferraro, the patience will continue to run thin.

New Modes, New Engine?

NHL 17 centered much of its focus around game modes, overhauling everything from franchise mode to Ultimate Team. Still, we can't help but speculate about future additions, such as bringing back the Winter Classic and implementing a dedicated All-Star Weekend experience. We'll continue to hold out hope for the return of GM Connected, no matter how unlikely the possibility may be.

The Frostbite engine is also bound to make an appearance in the near future, equipping the potential to drastically transform EA's NHL series as we know it. It's had a substantial effect on the FIFA series with this year's iteration, offering new possibilities and posing new stumbling blocks in terms of progression. The introduction of this visually spectacular engine is an exciting prospect, and how the transition is handled will ultimately prove vital for the future of the series.

Revamped presentation, Frostbite engine and full roster flexibility are the changes that need to be implemented in '18 for this series to truly take the next step.

New commentary, custom masks would add a lot , quicker roster updates , quicker patches, communication from e.a , smarter a.I, if u could follow the mold that NBA 2k17 has done or some aspects of it .

I second the AI improvement. It seems like our EASHL D are complete morons while our opponents' will squirrel their way out of anything. I'd also love the ability to select what style players our AI line mates are. The ability to save strategy settings from game to game seems like s no brainer, but yet it is not available. You can in HUT but not EASHL. Finally, what my team sees as some sort of ping assist that gives us insurmountable lag since we have good connections. My ping is consistently 10ms yet it feels like I'm driving a train some games.

We NEED to be able to edit stats DURING GM mode..that way we can keep up with the current roster edits...why is this so difficult? It's been in MLB The Show since day 1....nothing more frustrating than starting a season and wanting to boost a players attributes based on real life and having to start all over to do so..

I fully believe frostbite will give the push this series needs. High expectations for 18

I think the gameplay of the series is pretty solid rn.

Still alot of AI issues but regardless the game with some slider adjustments just looks like hockey.

However its time they took a year to flesh out all the game modes and update them to the standards 2k and Sony currently present.

Give both GM and EASHL equal treatment this game needs a proper single player option to the mulitplayer modes.

GM mode need roster share, sliders and a real scouting tool.

I always think gameplay should come first. In saying that A.I. Still need a lot of work. It's getting better but you still scratch your head a lot of the time. That plus ratings need to be wider still or have more impact then they do now. In saying all this I'm highly enjoying this years game.

They need to work on adding individuality to players. Since there are only 6 guys on the ice at a time they should really focus on players feeling different.

This seems to be an EA issue though as Madden has the same problem. I think adding a trait/badge system similar to NBA2K would do wonders for the series.

However I'm also worried that the move to Frostbite will involve another year or two of them making a million excuses for why the game seems to be stuck in the mud in terms of innovation or change.

I'm one of those people that thinks they really need a fresh new dev team but NHL sells just enough for them to justify the current regime.

The AI issues in this game make it unplayable for me. This game needs, first and foremost, a complete AI overhaul before any presentation changes. I would play a 16-bit looking hockey game with great AI over this, probably 8-bit in fact.

Who cares about player likeness, when the players' decisions and moves on the ice look nothing like the player to begin with.

Successful release? I must have played a different game.

Gameplay need to be improved, presentation too (I can remember in old hockey games when you'were in the dressing room before the game).

Classic/legends rosters with realistic gears will give hours of playing. Well little stuff wich can make the game deeper

I'm strictly a Be a Pro player, so I would love to see more immersion in this game mode.... (Post game interviews, More off ice decisions, Olympics/World Cup of Hockey invites, All- Star game selection etc.)

Also a revamped AI and complete gameplay overhaul.

Roster Sharing

More player differentiation/Tendencies
