NBA 2K17 won't be released until later this year. While the league still has to get through the playoffs, the NBA Draft and free agency, this is a fun time to talk about the future. This is going to be a huge summer for the NBA. It's an offseason like no other, and it's one we may never see again. The intrigue and mystery factors are off the charts.
For instance, the draft has two potential superstar players in Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram. There is a lack of star power after that, but at least two teams are going to come out happy in the end.
There's also this matter of a huge salary cap increase. The likes of Kevin Durant and (maybe) Dwight Howard are going to get these bank-breaking contracts from any team that has the necessary space to get a deal done. With the cap explosion, this means roughly 26 teams can offer a max contract. The upcoming free-agent class is not the strongest, but there's still lots of money to spend. We will probably never have this many teams with max money to spend again, which could mean some wild trades also happen to fill those cap sheets.
But look, I know you're all still looking at me funny. You're saying, "why don't we wait to talk about this once teams have new faces and are settled come August?" Well, what would be the fun in that? The mystery is the best part of the NBA offseason, so let's indulge and try to figure out what teams will be the most intriguing come next season.
Philadelphia 76ers
When I think about these teams, I try to think of teams that would work well in a MyLeague situation or, 2K servers pending, an online ranked match. Of course, in a MyLeague situation the Sixers are a clear choice here because of Jahlil Okafor and Nerlens Noel.
Now take those two and add Ben Simmons to that roster.
Scary, right? And scary for multiple reasons. I mean it might be a mess. The spacing would be terrible, and you also have Joel Embiid to consider. But ohhhhhhhhhh the talent.
It's not a lock Philadelphia lands the top pick in the NBA Draft (also not a lock they don't pick Ingram over Simmons), but Ben Simmons would be my pick because we should all trust the process. Plus, the idea of Simmons being a point forward, running a pick and roll with Okafor/Noel, and getting to the rim with Okafor/Noel waiting at the rim to grab a rebound is something to dream about. Especially with the reality of those three getting better each year in a MyLeague setting, this is a scary group. I'm not saying Brandon Ingram wouldn't have just as much of an impact in Philadelphia, but that's why this list is subject to change later on.
Milwaukee Bucks
If you asked a group of hardcore basketball fans which team they were most disappointed in this season, I think the Bucks would be on a lot of those lists.
Milwaukee made the playoffs last year, added Greg Monroe last summer and played most of last year without star rookie Jabari Parker. This was the time for the Bucks to ascend into a new tier in the Eastern Conference.
Well, that may need to wait a bit. Milwaukee took a step back this year. Part of that was perhaps the absence of head coach Jason Kidd due to hip surgery. Another part was the Bucks spent most of this season trying to find an identity they can stick with going forward. Milwaukee tried to turn Giannis Antetokounmpo into its point guard of the future while having a space killer named Michael Carter-Williams figuring out how to not get in the way.
One of these things doesn't belong here, and the Bucks continue to realize trading away Brandon Knight might be the worst decision the franchise has made since trading away Ray Allen. Knight makes the Bucks a playoff team, and probably an Eastern Conference contender with this group.
The good news about video games is you can easily remove a problem with trade finder and go forward with the Greek Freak as your point guard. The Bucks can be great, and they will be great because they're already a fun team to play with in 2K.
Houston Rockets
If you enjoyed watching the comedy sitcom that was the 2015-16 Houston Rockets, then this offseason is about to be the bee's knees.
Dwight Howard is likely gone. James Harden is going to be all alone with Michael and Clint Capela -- maybe they can watch SpongeBob together. The Rockets are also in need of a new head coach because who knows if they want to bring back J.B. Bickerstaff? The Rockets are a mess and can no longer fix everything in free agency.
But there is good news if you're talking 2K with the Rockets. They may be a mess, but at least there's a star to build around. For all the jokes of Harden not playing defense, he's pretty good in video game land. He can make All-Defensive Third Team with a little bit of luck and skill. Harden is someone you can build a franchise around, or ship off for draft picks because you want to start over.
The Rockets are such a mess right now, and they might not even make the playoffs next season. But they're that much of a mess it's worth putting the label of "intriguing" on them.
Detroit Pistons
Here's my team to watch for next year. Look for the Pistons to make a gigantic leap in the Eastern Conference standings next season.
I'd like to point out none of this will be possible if Reggie Jackson makes the same boneheaded decisions he made in the first round of the playoffs this year. However, he's got plenty of playoff reps under his belt at this point, so I have to believe he will be better next time.
Jackson point aside, the Pistons have something going here. They're going to re-sign Andre Drummond to a max contract at 12:01 a.m. on July 1, and it will be shocking if he even looks for deals elsewhere (it wouldn't matter anyway because Detroit would match any offer given to him). Also, here's your daily reminder that Andre Drummond is younger than Frank Kaminsky.
Detroit has a lot to look forward to. Stanley Johnson showed in the playoffs he's going to be a very good wing player in Detroit, although maybe trying to get in LeBron James' head was not the most tactical maneuver. Detroit is also filled with shooters like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope --even if he's still only a shooter in theory -- and Marcus Morris. On top of all that, this team is very young.
The only thing that needs replacing for the Pistons is that bench. It's a mixture of old and young, but mostly old contributors like Steve Blake and Anthony Tolliver. Detroit proved it can hang with the likes of Cleveland, but the Pistons need to learn what it takes to close out games. They came close, but just didn't possess the experience the Cavaliers had.
If you're looking for an intriguing team to do a MyLeague with next year, I'd recommend the Pistons at this point.
