Madden NFL 15: Hands-On Impressions

I had a chance to play Madden NFL 15 on the PlayStation 4 yesterday for about an hour, so this is obviously a small sample size and I expect to have more impressions through the show. While waiting for my opponent to choose his play, I would peek over at the other stations to see more and thus, I’ve seen quite a bit of gameplay. There is still time for the team to tweak some of the items mentioned below, so just remember that as you read through them. These are my impressions from the build I played, I have no idea how close it is to the finished product, nor do I know if things will change for the better or worse when it hits store shelves. I’m just telling you what I’m seeing now with this build, so take it for what it’s worth.

  • Animations are smoother, but sliding is still noticeable, especially in replays.
  • The kick meter reminds me of the swing controls in a golf game. It still doesn’t seem too difficult, but it’s good to finally see a change. The wind direction issue on kicks has been fixed.
  • Watched quite a few QB’s throwing on the run resulting in inaccurate passes.
  • Saw a few scramble with their non-mobile QB and try to get a few yards, noticed turnovers more often than not.
  • When seeing someone running the ball and juking close to the sidelines, I noticed quite a few ran out of bounds, instead of cutting up the field because of a drawn out animation they couldn’t break out of.
  • Uniform degradation looked fantastic.
  • Hard to hear any of the new commentary, the EA Sports booth was very LOUD.
  • I didn’t see a coin toss, you just select receive or kick, guess they removed it?
  • QB accuracy is all over the place, but that is not a bad thing. I had a few overthrows, under throws, lead the receiver too much or threw it behind him on numerous occasions, which causes all sorts of new receiver animations.
  • Receivers will try to tap both feet to catch a ball to stay in bounds, didn’t notice any sliding here, looked fantastic. Actually saw one on a fade to the back of the end zone and a regular sideline out pass.
  • I’m still trying to get used to the “cone” tackling, but you can turn it off. I just need to play with it more. Same with controlling the defensive lineman, getting a jump and hitting the right button to maneuver around the offensive lineman.
  • More on QB accuracy. I had my feet set, had a nice pocket and still threw a few inaccurate passes, I loved seeing that. Might be frustrating on a 3rd down play call, but that’s football, it happens. And I was Romo. :)
  • Saw QB’s throwing all sorts of errant passes in the games I was watching on other screens. Some had their rookie QB’s starting and they wanted to throw their controller. I was loving it. Please don’t change this EA.
  • Still seeing defenders drop easy interceptions, I guess that is ok for some of you, but I’d rather see the defense make you pay for stupid decisions. Yes, there are sliders for that, but I didn’t have time to test them obviously.
  • Love the player celebrations after touchdowns. No more cutscenes, the player(s) do them in realtime. However I still saw a few times where they didn’t do anything. For example, when  Aaron Rodgers scores he usually does the discount double check or whatever you want to call it. I didn’t see him do that, in fact, I didn’t see him do the Lambeau Leap either. But it was one touchdown, on another station. Maybe he does it the next time, maybe he doesn’t, just throwing it out there.
  • Celebrations in general just look so much more fluid. Celebrations after sacks, first downs, and big plays in general just add to the atmosphere and polish of the game. I hate seeing the play call screen cover them up though.
  • Without hitting the pause button, by tapping up on the D-pad, you can change the camera angle. We had an issue getting it to work properly, but I’ll play with it some more today. It looks like some things are only seen when playing at lower difficulty settings.
  • I tried a few curl routes and didn’t have any issue completing them, hoping they aren’t too easy against a better defender, will play around with it.
  • Not enough time behind the sticks to say whether or not zones and man to man coverages are better, but they certainly feel tighter. I was in a cover 2 deep and my opponent threw a deep ball with NOBODY around, he was wide open. It could have been a fluke.
  • Really enjoyed the running game. Had two separate kick-out blocks, one that paved the way for long touchdown run, the other to get a first down to run out the clock for the win. When you patiently wait for blocks to setup, you will get rewarded.
  • Still not seeing any jostling/hand fighting between receivers and defensive backs, this really needs to happen. Add a subtle jersey pull, throw an arm out to impede progress. Have the refs throw some flags. OK, I’m done here.

My initial impressions of Madden NFL 15 after an hour are that it’s still Madden for better or worse. It plays better than last year, but don’t expect the wheel to be reinvented this year with the game. I’ll hopefully have more time to play Madden and post more impressions later in the show.

They've talked about how they aren't going to remove features any more without giving them a real chance to become accepted & get fully developed, so I'd be shocked if it was gone.

I thought I read from the Q&A with the game developer in which he stated there was WR/DB interaction? I could have sworn I read that from one of the questions. I would have to go back & see though. If not, this is ridiculous. This should be a given for this game by now. It's been asked to be added for years now. How hard can this be? Make the darn game like the NFL! Geez!

Dropped DB passes & no WR/DB interaction are two areas of gameplay that need to be addressed. Oh! It's OK! We have next year to wait & see if these get added. I can't believe some of this stuff that continues with this game. Do they even get any NFL player opinions on what to add to the game? Do they take the game cover guys at all & ask them for their input?

If they did we would see a much better game. Get some NFL players in the darn studio when making the game & let them help make this game. We would all be complaining less & love the game. I still like this game but they need to make big improvements.

Rex Dickson has name-dropped at least three active NFL players who were consulted when designing various features of this year's game, including Panthers' quarterback Cam Newton and Steelers' linebacker Stevenson Sylvester. (I think the third was Steelers' CB Cortez Allen, not 100% sure though).

tl;dr - they are already doing this.

are penalties improved, especially pass interference?

I believe it has been mentioned that they are not improved, but the developers know about the issue and hope to fix it for 16.

I can't explain how much I really hope they do this more. IMO, they should just scrap the GC program all together and work on getting guys who have played and coached football at the highest levels in to help them work on certain aspects.

I want to believe in this game and believe all the hype but... I just can't. EA has made a ton of promises before and they always seem to find a way to jip us. I was watching the gameplay footage and while the graphics do look vastly improved, the problem remains that its basically new models using the same animations. IMHO the ignite physics engine is garbage. They need to just re-build Madden completely from the ground up instead of constantly adding bits and pieces to the same pile of crap. The game looks even more stiff in some ways. Watch the video and pay close attention to the animations. It still moves with a weird floaty stiffness until there's a pile up and players are flopping all over the place like crash dummies. I was hoping we would really see more natural flowing animations that represented true human movement. I mean this is next gen. I hope at least the defensive additions aren't just a trend and OP'd. But again, we will see.

You will be able to play on any of the Camera Views while on Defense.

One major concern I have is the cheapness of the defense. I noticed in the E3 build during the niners vs seahawks match up there was a 3 man rush with 2 double teams. Here's where it all fell apart. The middle rusher split the double team fairly easily. The blockers made no attemp to maintain or pursue their protection. The edge rusher on the far left that was also being double teamed just simply walked right around the two blockers who made NO attempt to maintain protection. Both linemen stood facing down the field hip to hip in the same stance. The edge rusher on the far right was player controlled and basically used that new jump-the-snap feature to beat his man. So now, you have all three defensive linemen coming through the line with relative ease even though the offense had what should have been full protection. It should never be that easy for a 3 man rush to get into the back field. So my concern is that we are getting the same exact f*ck'd up line play as before, only now the defense is way OP's further exacerbating the issue. I would like to see better trap blocking. Blocking down field with true awareness where your linemen and or TE don't run right past an immediate threat on run plays. Double teams that actually work and offensive linemen that continue to struggle and pursue the defensive player even if they manage to get past them. Not just stand still looking down the field as if to say, oh well he got by me, not my problem anymore. That would get you benched or kicked off the team in RL. I just want realistic simple football logic. To be honest, we wouldn't even need the OP defense if the game functioned as it was meant to. Football plays should play out based on intelligence and technique. Defensive schemes and assignments, not pure bull rush power buttons. Another concern with this new OP defense is that not all teams have the Seahawks defense so not all teams should be brick walls. Also, did they address player stats being more meaningful? There should be no possible way 240 to 250 pound linebacker should be pushing around a 310 pound offensive linemen with relative ease like we saw in the demo.

I know I'm listing a lot of concerns and thoughs and I have a ton more but I want the SIMULATION that was boldly promised by Mr. Rex Dickson. If it's going to truly represent the sport then make it a sim and make me forget about any old game, we all know which one, that was considered a better representation of the sport. My fear is that we won't see the game evolve into the game we all want until they move on from the ignite engine. There are inherent issues with it that most likely just can't be changed. or would take a ton of re-coding which I'm sure EA is unwilling to do. But, we will see. If Madden is all we have then make it worth being the only boss on the yard.

I've been extremely hard on NCAA and Madden during the PS3/360 era, but I admit that they've made some nice progress the past few years. Gang tackling, less suction blocking/tackling, better player movement physics, etc. I'm not saying that there isn't still work I'd like to see done in some of these areas, but they are noticeably better than where we were in Madden/NCAA 06-12. I don't expect a game to be perfect ... that's just not a realistic expectation. I just want a reasonable replication of the sport I love. And in my opinion, Madden is getting closer.

However, I feel like the last MAJOR hurdle EA has left to get in this game is a jostling/positioning system between WRs and DBs. It kills me because FIFA does this so incredibly well. For Madden to be as lacking in this area as they are year, after year ... it's just inexcusable, in my opinion.

I like most what of what I read. My favorite is getting 2 feet down inbounds

Everything I hear is clearly pointing to that coming next year and I was told just wait til you see what they're doing with WR/DB interactions, not this year. For someone to have already seen what it looks like now, it must be coming in Madden 16, I highly doubt anything further away than that would be that polished already.

That was a big problem last year, but maybe that was "my" fault.

Because passing was so easy last year, I used sliders to compensate to gimp user pass defense. So my reallyer uber developed OL (because I practice) would just block ghosts they could maybe see off somewhere upfield in the distance while, all too often, pass rushers got penetration, so that my franchise QB was sacked 40+ times per season.

And I could still pass for 4000+ yards, 65% completion, 32 TD's (and 27 INT's!).

It's just been impossible to get a good sim game. I hope this year will get there.

Did special teams seem improved at all?? Like kick returns possible to return one to the house now? Are punt return camera angles a little more wide and zoomed out so you can see the lanes??

Does the No Huddle Offense work like it does in NCAA 14? Or is it just like last years no huddle offense?

Is it all the way like NCAA, like, the plays you can call from No Huddle are based on personnel on the field, so you can't go from five wide to goal line and whatnot?

That would be nice

Can a Gamechanger or anyone please explain the logic in getting rid of it, especially on the PS4/Xbox One consoles?
Instead of having you pick heads or tails they just randomize who won the coin toss.

They didn't really get rid of it. It's just handled in the team selection screen. The rationale behind it being removed is to get you into the actual game quicker. As well as to probably try and emulate an actual TV broadcast more closely.

Wind direction works now, maybe it's a trade-off.

(Joking folks)

Maybe if there is enough request for a patch, they might patch it in for the big game.

I'm usually concerned what numbers I have in the pool, drinking or coming in from playing football. I've missed the flip many times. Plus, I can't hear what the ref is saying anyway with all the talking and jibber-jabber going on pre-game.

The only quiet time during the SB is the commercials.
