NCAA Football 14 Demo Impressions Roundtable

Ben Vollmer: I'm having a hard time putting my finger on it. What is it that makes NCAA Football 14 so much better than it's most recent predecessors? Is it the Infinity Engine 2.0, the incredible upgrade in graphics and colors, or perhaps the wealth of new camera options at our disposal? I'd argue that it is all of these things. For once, EA seems to be getting some of the little things right. Things we have been calling for since this generation of consoles hit shelves. For the first time in years, NCAA plays a solid game of football.

That said, there are still a few issues that clearly have not been taken care of. Special teams is better, but no where near where it needs to be. Sidelines still look terrible, and the crowds are even worse (thankfully, EA has stated that will change with the Ignite Engine). What's great is that even with all of these things, NCAA 14 still gives us plenty to be excited about. I saw plenty of things that made me want to play the game a lot more, and I've already played five or six games. At this point, we just have to hope EA doesn't alter anything too drastically before the game's release.

Rob Kollars: If I am being completely upfront here, I wasn't that excited about this years annual NCAA release. My complete thought was that with the next-gen systems right around the corner, that at best NCAA fans would get some cosmetic touch-ups, a new mode that would be viewed as a gimmick, and some random updates and changes to the online dynasty portion that would do little to propel it forward - boy was I wrong. While I am not claiming it's the best sports title released this generation (it's a demo), it sure feels like the full version might have the chance to be mentioned someone's top five.

From the improvements in the gameplay itself, and the infinity engine 2.0, to the CPU's ability to not just run the ball, but do it in a way that mimics human characteristics. From the much improved secondary play, and the solid offensive/defensive line interaction and a new color palette that just pops off the screen, there is a lot to be impressed by. That's not where the improvements end though, as the coordinator cam is great, the overall ability of the CPU's game and its seemingly intelligent decisions, to neutral site games - there is just so much to like early on. Yes it has some issues that were noticeable in the demo, but for me the pro's far outweigh the con's so far.

Jayson Young: Like the college senior whose GPA is beyond repair after seven straight semesters of Ds and Cs, there is nothing NCAA Football 14 could have reasonably done in its final semester before the Xbox One/PlayStation 4 that would salvage the disastrous foundation of code on which NCAA Football and Madden NFL has been built this generation.

Downloadable uniforms and authentic glove patterns do not matter when the players sporting such super-detailed equipment still motor around the field using jerky, robotic animations.

Lavishly detailed stadiums betray their very purpose when the cardboard cutouts seated within continue to sound so muted and disinterested.

99-rated defenses full of All-Americans look as foolish as ever when their AI coordinators still profess that a "goal-line stand" is best achieved by calling a cover 2 zone from a nickel formation.

Adding a "2.0" moniker to NCAA Football 14's "Infinity Engine" does nothing to change the fact that the feature currently functions better as a comedy routine than it does as a physics simulator.

A game can license all the Nesslers and Herbstreits and ESPN logos it wants, but without intelligent commentary scripting or proper cutaway camera angles, even icons of sports television will fail to sell a believable broadcast experience.

Without getting into a doctoral dissertation on the game's shortcomings, I'll simply say that the NCAA Football 14 demo feels like the type of Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 experience that EA Tiburon should have delivered two to three years earlier, not two to three weeks before the series ingloriously graduates.

Caley Roark: Last year was the first year in a while that I skipped NCAA. From reports, it either got worse or didn't change enough to warrant a purchase. From my brief time with the demo, I'm not sure I'll be back for 2014.

I loved the Coordinator Cam, which I feel gets close to an actual playable broadcast camera. The new option plays felt good, and thanks to the tutorials, were easy to execute. The training actually helps you look for the best "option" to run based on what the defense does.

Still, as Jayson points out, there are problems with this game that haven't been fixed, and probably won't be until the next gen release in 2014. To compound on his criticism, I thought cut scenes looked washed and low-res (demo limitations?). Some animations, both player and mascot, had severe clipping. And, during a fake field goal, the commentary team pontificated on how making a quarterback change might affect the psyche of the team -- based on one gadget play.

I am still interested in NCAA 14, but more for curiosity's sake than to seriously purchase. Perhaps it may eventually quench my football thirst while I'm waiting for the next generation version of Madden.

I will definitely be keeping an eye open for a thread on this editor after NCAA 14 drops, to see what people have been able to create.
I don't play online, but for those who play in an online Dynasty, I agree that being able to use the editor to create a common Roster and Profile to best suit the objectives of that group of Dynasty players would be a good idea. To do so successfully would require that all players in a particular online Dynasty agree in advance to a set of "rules" which would govern the modifications made to the Roster and Profile. There would also need to be a way to test the modifications before Dynasty play begins, so that all players are satisfied with the play style.

The fact that we can actually make these types of modifications to the game makes all the difference for me. Now that I have personally experienced the fun of making the changes and the satisfaction of seeing the successful results, I doubt that I could enjoy the game if this capability is taken away.

I enjoyed the demo but about half of my offensive plays the play preview looked like it had OD'd on espresso. Instead of straight lines there were wildly gyrating squiggles. On ps3

Been playing awhile now still struggling with user pass rush

Anyone have tips on how to beat a block while rushing (I always use DE)

prob the wrong spot to ask but since its been brought up in here, what do you guys mean by the overating? i know it was a huge prob for years on here, moreso the progression being to powerful but do you guys mean individiual skills are to high or overall or what? didnt someone who reviewed say that there were to many overall rated 99 defenses? that doesnt matter since overall of teams factor in depth also. the overalls for individual players are not important either as they just add up the position specific skills of player to reach them. i start guys in the 70's over high 80's all the time because overalls dont translate to the field. just wondering what it is thats overpowered? i hope the progression stays the same. its not perfect but its better now than it ever was.

That ridiculous, If the game is good, and you love football, your not gonna buy the game becuz "This shoulda came out 5-6 years ago". Thats crazy.

Again, if EA can fix the 1. Corny replay angles, 2. Turn up the crowd noise to deafening on TDs and big plays, 3.Cut out those corny a** presentations in the beginning and go back to the NCAA 06 Pregame presentation, than this is a A+ effort all around.

Lags like crazy. Better not lag when the real game comes out

The game is much improve but being a loyal fan of the series I have to mention and hopefully it don't go on unheard ears that every runner is a power runner quarterbacks, running backs, and receivers. I play on Heisman no other level I been truck and stiff arm so many times by players u never seen truck or stiff arm anybody in real life game. Just going to give an example of De'Anthony Thomas is trucking and stuff arming people like crazy he is a great speed and elusive player but can anyone find game film of him full on trucking or stiff arming somebody. That's my only negative.

Eye black, captain's patches, the ability to choose team captain's. And track pride stickers. I think the game is amazing. Feels like the best one yet. But seriously...... Im gonna need you to patch this stuff in.......

Something I've always want them to add in:

The ability to shift formations and send different players in motion after the first player was in motion gets set.

Example.

I'm in the I-formation and **** my fullback to the right. My Fullback is now set. I then motion my WR on the left side of the formation over to the right side. My formation now looks totally different because I have moved two players.

It really opens up a lot of different play variations. As of now, you can only motion one guy and after he is set you have to move him back to his original position if you want to motion somebody else.

We're not saying it's "good" though, just that it's improved. We're saying that while it is better than what we've had in the past, it's still just average and feels like something that should have been a 2nd or 3rd effort on these consoles. It's functional, and more playable than most of the games on this generation, but it's not "good."

And this is in our opinion, of course. If you think it's great, I'm not going to try to convince you any different. Your opinion of the game is really all that matters anyways. I'm just clarifying that for us it's not a case of "this game is great but since we didn't get it 5 years ago I'm not buying it." It's a case of "this game, while better, is still average and doesn't warrant a $65 purchase."

After playing the demo a lot more.....I am happy with NCAA 14. It feels much more organic than it ever has.

The AI seems much improved on offense and the option is a joy.

With that though.....I am not paying full retail for this game. No way.

I can keep playing NCAA 13 till a major price drop. I have paid enough full retail for EA games over the last 20 years.

The last 2 years I was able to pre-order this for 44.99 as well as Madden.

Not this year though. I wonder why? Anyway a really fun game is waiting with NCAA 14.

That is the thing that NCAA has bitch slapped Madden this gen on.

FUN FACTOR.

It is a far more enjoyable football game than Madden this gen.....by far.

Still don't understand most of the plays in the Spread Teams' Playbooks. Half of Oregon's playbook is Urban Meyere's Florida Days. I just want the playbooks as realistic as possible. WHEN DOES OREGON RUN THE VEER OR SHOVEL OPTION ?!?! NEVER. Oregon runs IZR's, OZR's, Inside Zones (IZ's) and a few counters. They left one play that Oregon runs diligently and put it into VTech's Playbook which is the Buck Sweep Read !!!!!! Also, why doesn't Texas A&M have a QB Draw in EVERY FORMATION. Have you not seen Johnny Manziel's run plays ?? He got most of his yardage from designed Draws or QB Counters.

# 54 geezmeister @ 06/22/13 11:33 PM
Wouldn't it be cool if you could carry over your coaches info. I hate starting over each year..........

Having said that. The more and more i play this demo the better it gets. I think this one is a winner

I know what you're talking about here. It has been many many years since any EA football game allowed the user to shift or multiple motion, in an effort to curb cheezing I guess. Would add a ton of realism to be able to move your guys pre-snap the way you would be able to irl.

Agreed. I'll go a step farther: if a random OS member posted Jayson's comments verbatim in the demo impressions thread, would they receive a vacation from the forums for trolling?

The writers are under the direction of their editors, not the moderation staff - it's entirely different.

Also, I can only say that unless the guy posted something like that OVER AND OVER again, I'd have let it go. Can't speak for other mods.

Fair enough.

I like it, it's better than last year so far and that's just the demo. Hopefully EA will finish tweaking it, but it's worth my money.

Finally, after about 8 years, Florida has white/ORANGE shoes!!!! Holy hell.

Corliss, actually a vast majority of Manziel's rushing yardage came from scrambles.

Oh, and I'd love for EA to have a Samoan hair option. Not the dreads hanging out the back of the helmet, but a froish option.
