NBA 2K12 Reviewer Gameplay Impressions

The wait is finally over. NBA 2K12 has hit retail shelves and our gaming systems. So far the game has done nothing less than impress me when gameplay is the topic of discussion. The game feels just as smooth as when OS had the exclusive hands-on demo and the post game is everything we’ve been asking for the past decade.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you total immersion.

Gameplay

Not many could have imagined NBA 2K11 would be topped easily after its success, but 2K12 beats last year’s game by far when it comes to gameplay. Everything from isomotion, passing, post game and AI have vastly improved. The game itself looks like you’re watching the NBA on TNT.

Visually, 2K12 moves perfectly. Clunky animations are officially an annoyance of the past. In previous 2K titles, getting caught in an animation hurling you in the wrong direction basically meant a turnover. Now you have a chance to save the play by passing out of the situation.

You won’t notice how awesome the game looks until you see teams running in transition or killing a fast break. And on that note, it’s safe to say the fast break is at long last back in an NBA game. The improved AI helps make the fast break what it is, with players understanding their role during the break. Also, each team is different on the breaks. The Spurs can still get some points with a fast break, but a lot of the time I’d recommend holding up and setting up the offense. But with a freak-athletic team like the Heat, make it rain as often as possible when you have a chance to execute the perfect fast break.

Point guard play is another big difference maker. Ball handing has a huge impact this year. Depending on who you’re using, team playing styles will change drastically. Using a D-Rose or Westbrook will allow you to create right off the dribble and penetrate, with the option of driving or dishing it out. With the slower, more old-fashioned guards like Kidd or Fischer, the option of blowing by your defender isn’t there unless you want to rack up turnovers. However, the closer you get to the hoop your handle rating will decrease, making it more likely for you to lose control of the ball.

But, if you’re the lucky one to get through to the hoop, the options are endless. Every shot you take can be altered in mid-air by using the sticks. If Tyson Chandler is jumping at you from the right, simply move the stick to the left and get a clean shot. Your success rate will go down slightly, but it will be an opportunity nonetheless.

AI Improvements

The AI improvements affect every aspect of 2K12, so everything mentioned in this article is reaping the benefits. However, so much has improved that it deserves its own section.

The CPU beats you by playing basketball. Each team runs their respective offenses from reality, and they run them all very well. In the past it felt like the CPU would only dominate because they could do things that users couldn’t pull off. It was the most inefficient way to create difficulties in the sports genre. But now it has completely changed. If you’re losing by 30 points it isn’t because there is a code letting every shot sink, it’s because the other team is playing basketball better than you. They will use pump fakes often, find their best shooters early and dish it into the post when there is a mismatch.

Your teammates also play some ball with you this year. You won’t see Kobe sitting in the corner waiting for you to make something happen. Instead he will be running around trying to get open himself. The new and improved play calling system also comes into play here, which you will see in the infinite amount of screens your players set.

With all of the AI improvements, you better learn how to play defense or you’ll be breaking controllers left and right out of frustration. You have to practice this year if you want to be good.

Post Game

Easily the biggest upgrade to the gameplay this year is the revamped post game. By pressing Y (Triangle on the PS3), your player will start posting up his defender. From here you have an array of moves at your disposal, including a spin around your defender or a quick fadeaway to create seperation.

Also, each player has a different set of post moves. Someone like Steve Nash won’t give you much, if anything, while posting up his defender. But when you get into the likes of LeBron (hold the jokes) and Melo, the post game becomes your most dangerous weapon just like it is in the NBA.

Also, just like any other aspect of the game, defense is key here as well. Using the sticks can help you shut down the CPU by moving it in the proper direction at the right time. Be careful though, the Dream Shake can leave you crying on the floor much like Adam Morrison.

Play Call System

My biggest gripe with 2K basketball has always been the lacking ability to run plays. They were clunky, slow and downright awful. In 2K12, the system was redone, adding in multiple plays per player.

Star players obviously have more plays than Carlos Delfino, since your offense will run through them more often. But each player, even Delfino, have plays that are suited to their role and style.

The plays still run slower than anyone would want them to, but if you initiate one within the first few seconds of the shot clock, it will come to fruition before you’re hit with a violation.

Another big change involves the play diagrams that show up on the court. They are easier to see, and actually easy to run through. Remember last year when it took you a good three to four seconds to stand in the circle? Well don’t worry about that anymore. The diagrams will help you watch the play unfold in front of your eyes, giving you the best chance at running an efficient offense.

Final Thoughts

I’m impressed with how much has improved in just a year. For games to improve, especially in the sports genre, it takes a lot of work. That work is apparent in the gameplay of NBA 2K12. There are a lot of moves to learn, which are taught in a new Training Camp mode, which I will touch on more tomorrow.

But until then, you better hit the gym.

This year, we are talkin’ ‘bout practice.

the only thing i dont like is passing, when not using icon passing, the cpu chooses dumb passes for u.

also, when i get my center getting fronted by a pg. i pass it to him an pg steals it cuz there is no loft to the ball.

fix the passing loft an speed an im a happy camper

I think overall its an above excellent game! As with everything in the world we can always find something to complain about but i wont cuz i love this game! Excellent and by far the best sports game out there!

I understand that people are paid to write favorable articles, reviews, and comments, but some of you guys take this way too far I think. It insults the reader's intelligence and wrecks your credibility. Anyone who's put in more than 8 hours by now will realize that the game has many glaring problems. Gameplay issues that easily outweigh the upside.

A shame that 2K comes very close to being awesome but seems to devote so much more time and money to advertising than on the product itself.

I will be splitting my gaming time going forward between NBA2k12 and Skyrim (11/11/11) until Madden 13 drops. Maybe this will help me regain any perspective I may have loss in relation to determining video game quality these past 7 years.
It's just that honestly, I think they are going the Madden model. In the Insights and interviews the 2K guys kept this mantra going of "not resting on our laurels this year" and every review I read is beating that same talking point into us. A few improvements, yes, but 2K11 was full of problems that the company never saw fit to resolve.

In any case, I was an avid Madden guy too up until a few years ago, but I haven't bought the last two and oddly neither has anyone I know. I'm sure they sold very well, but I get the feeling people aren't crazy enthusiastic about Madden the way we used to be and I hope 2K doesn't go a similar route. They released a buggy game with poor AI and some questionable balance and design. I don't know what's wrong with their servers right now, but I haven't been able to play ranked or download anything since release.

Anyway, we only get one patch, so we'd better speak up if we see issues.

Overall, the NBA2K series has been sumwhat enjoyable for me except for the clunkiness of the controls due to the animation system but since the masses, mostly, seem to give it a pass, I don't see 2K getting a happier medium between the two.

It seems like those things r only improved slightly. Passing is horrible, as well. More later...

I can't wait to play my first games against my VIP profiles this weekend...As with last year, i am creating team specific profiles for most of the classic teams, and a few for the modern ones as well....The CPU plays a lot more realistic to begin with this year, so playing against VIPs should be even better than last year(which was pretty great)

It's not a game killer by any means but between that and the NBA lockout preventing rookies and new rosters the game won't have the replay value 2K11 had. I only get to play the same 15 games over and over again in the Greatest Mode? I want to start a season but I'm not even sure how I will approach that this year unless the lockout ends soon.

Don't get me wrong, I love this game. It just baffles me why they would away something so many of us look forward to every year. I'm hoping a patch might fix this. I'll still play this game and love it but not being able to move legends knocked it down a notch or two for me.
i'm sure somebody already posted this, but there IS a way to move Legends around...so you can create all kinds of fantasy madness if you want..just a little more work than last year

COMPLAINTS:

(1) Granted, the graphics & game play have been improved compared to NBA 2k11, however, I don't believe the change was anywhere near what many 2k fans were expecting or as 2k sports was claiming. I mean, has anyone else noticed the difference between the photos advertised and the actual in-game characters?

(2) It was great that 2K expanded on the historic rosters (which made NBA 2k11 so great)...BUT, to give us all these legendary teams, and yet place so many restrictions on what you can do with them is just a big let down. By restrictions, I'm referring to not being able to customize legendary teams (e.g., assign or trade legends to current or other historic teams.)

(3) Moreover, not being able to use legends in the "create a team" mode was, again...a big upset. I mean something like this just seems so obvious to me, that I cannot understand why 2K sports would not allow users to customize the rosters (retro rosters) or create teams using legendary players.

***Now with respect to my complaints regarding the restrictions on trading/assigning/ or creating a team with legends....Whoever @ 2k sports thought that this would be okay, should be fired ! I mean, what kind of idiots do you have working there ? I almost feel like I got ripped off. 2k sports totally misrepresented the game...Making it seem like you can use these legends in all modes and blah, blah, blah.. (I read somewhere that you can customize the legendary rosters by starting a season mode, and exporting rosters... I mean ARE THEY SERIOUS with that ! That is not an acceptable solution for me or for many others I’m sure....That is f-ing ridiculous.)

(4) Why is there so many limitations with editing players (both current and retro)? For as long as I can remember, 2k has not allowed users to customize items, such as the length of player's shorts, or sock colors...WTF??? Does that piss anybody else off? I mean these players have shorts down to their ankles...It looks silly to me. The players’ uniforms should look like they actually fit the players.

(5) Lastly, why would 2K remove the Jordan sneakers?! That was so cool (except for the problem with setting up the color ways, which stunk)…2k sports adds all these bullsh*t sneakers to replace the Air Jordans of last year (and by Air Jordans, I’m referring to the real Jordan sneakers, e.g., I-XVI…not the rest of the garbage sneakers they added). And 2K, when you do add sneakers to the game, do it right! To the people at 2k, its quality you want to focus on….not quantity (unless ofcourse you can do both).

***I’m sure these comments won't get me anywhere, but I am hoping that maybe 2K sports will actually read some of these comments and take some pointers. I’m just really annoyed with 2K sports right now. I hate to mention EA sports because their graphics and game play was cheesy in the past, but they sure did have some great ideas integrated in their games.

***2K sports should really consider creating a patch that would allow customization of rosters (both retro and current)…That’s the least they can do! In the meantime though, I will post this comment in as many threads as I can, and hopefully prevent consumers from being deceived by 2K sports.

***To 2K…Try being honest with the marketing of your products. If you want to remove something from your game, then give people fair notice, instead of having us purchase the game, and realizing this afterwards.
I thought this was well written and on point. Not to mention the only way to use legends online is to purchase DLC. The game is fantastic but to the OP's point 2K put major emphasis on the legends then restricted what we can do with them. Not a good deal especially if the lockout doesnt end and we are stuck with last years rosters.

Does anyone else play My Player mode??? For me, this is the main reason i buy NBA 2k. And i am disappointed, AGAIN. Since 2k10, My Player has been gettin worse and more frustrating (to think, its supposed to get BETTER).
1. My CPU teammates r terrible, whether i play on Hall Of Fame or Rookie. They just suck completely. Im only into my 4th game and i have to carry the load for my team (Golden State Warriors). Let me remind you that I am a Rookie, rated 61, coming off of the bench and i only play about 8 mins a game. So if i dont lead the way, we lose. WTF
2. The opposing CPU is UNSTOPPABLE. Trying to defend them is hard enough due to barely being able to control my own player. But they make every single shot. i mean, c'mon. I know its NBA but seriously. They get 50 three pointers a game, 30 And-One's, etc.
3. Idk why they decided to add this 'bumping off of defenders' thing, because now i cant even run a play without gettin stuck on defender. I even get stuck in the key and called for a 3 sec violation, all because my defender has a vacuum for a chest. Please get this horrible animation off, its just plain stupid. Definitely ruins my experience. I finally just gave up and went to Create A Legend (with LeBron). Same problems as listed above (and more), though. But at least he isnt rated 61 like my created player.
I can keep going on and on but I will stop there. I hope an update wont ruin the whole My Player like the update for 2k11(im praying). 2k12 is a great improvemt tho, and thanks to Sliders i can play it without gettin pissed off as i did with 2k11. I only play head to head, since online play is very slow and delays horribly.

I coulda swore theres a long thread in the 2k12 forum that tells you how to do everything you guys are complaining about when it comes to the legends....

If that is your only gripe, then there is a solution....

you are right, technically. But why use this an as excuse to not berate 2k/vc for taking large steps backwards in nearly every department outside of 'The greatest' mode and actual gameplay.
I mean, you could actually do this last year without using a tricky exploit.

The dunk package glitch mentioned by J Smoov is reminiscent of 2k9 or 2k10, fortunately it was patched and you could assign dunk packages to nearly anyone who could dunk in game. Regardless of player height too.

Now, despite mostly polished gameplay (see: 3pt shooting and passing reminiscent of 2k9/2k10), everything outside of actually playing the game severely lacks polish. 2 steps forward
one step backwards has never felt so applicable when talking about a videogame.

I wanted to start a new thread in the forums but decided against it, but i'll post the idea here

To All OS'ers saying 'this is the best 2k ever' (thread title)

Rly?

(end)

Really rly!

I'm so heartbroken right now. Can't wait for the full version of 2k12 to be released.

So NBA 2k12 and TES V are now the biggest upcomming releases on my videogame calender.
Enjoy "the greatest' my sim nation brethren!

@MrBasketball.. Youre acting like this was the last $63 you had left to spend. If you dont like something, fine.. but dont act like "ohh Ive never been on a forum.. but for this Im going to register! Hmm" Like you dont sit at home on OS all day reading what other people have to say.. wishing you could figure out something to bicker at.. Obviously it cant be Madden12.. EA made that... its gold.. there cant be any problems with that.. (except for actual gameplay).. Let me see which would I rather have? Good gameplay or pretty sneakers.. Youre right.. I want the sneakers..

This is why i never before joined a forum until (wednesday, oct. 5)...because of stupid losers like yourself. You go threw these forums looking to comment on peoples' comments rather than focus on offering constructive criticism to the companies producing these games. Either (a) you're looking for friends because you can't make any outside the virtual world, or (b) you like to talk **** over the internet because you no i cant find you and just kick the **** out of you. Im done with this forum bull**** !! I don't have patience for people like you. I have a life you f*ccin virgin. have fun posting b*itch!

Uh.... anyway. The gameplay is great! The AI is tough & plays smart. My complaints involve losng things that were in 11. Substitutions are so tough! That & the restrictions on the legends are my big complaints. Good game otherwise.

That's your opinion. I agree this game has more problems than we anticipated, but it's still a damn good game. The gameplay is the best from an NBA game to date.

My big gripes are My Player and online. MP was too hyped to be shipped with these issues and online is just starting to get annoying. I don't remember the last year online worked.

Regardless though, this is still better than 2K11.

IAs many praises that this game has recieved you would think Jesus made this game. I unfortunately don't share the same love for 2k12. This game is overated. I basically only care about gameplay and I have to say that 12 is a step down. As I play the game more the controls are becoming more natural, but 2k11 handled better in my opinion. When I play online I'm often scared that I will destroy my controller trying to stay in front of a ball handler or contest a shot. You have to press the button you need 3 sec before you actually need it. I couldn't rate this game higher than a 8.

# 39 Al_Boogie3 @ 10/10/11 11:45 AM
The game play is so realistic and you have people complaining about certain things.

1. If you are a back peddling and the ball handler stops on a dime to take a jump shot and you try to contest a shot, like in real life there will be a delay on the defender jumping up to contest a shot becuase he will have to gather himself from back peddling.

2. there is a small window on trying to make a pass when there is a pick and role in real life, so trying to make the pass on the actual game is more realistic.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I respects everyone thoughts, I'm just trying to give some input on how the devs at 2K thought about the game

# 40 moemoe24 @ 10/27/11 11:22 PM
Only thing that got better with this game is the graphics. Everything else took a step backwards. The legend garbage they sold us is just that....garbage.
