NFL 2K5 Obliterates Madden 13...and all others
Posted on September 2, 2012 at 09:36 PM.
I'll keep this short and sweet. After spending an extensive amount of time with Madden13 and having played all others, including my favorite Maddens 2005/06, I have come to the conclusion that Madden just doesn't hold a candle to NFL 2K5.

2K5 has now been given the title in my book as the best NFL simulation game of all-time. The level of detail in this game is STILL incredible! The Franchise mode is FAR and away better the Connected Careers (which is a great idea in theory but lacking in execution, presentation is better than any sports game out today, the "physics" of NFL 2K5 OBLITERATE Madden 13's Infinity Engine, which contrary to it's ad campaign, does provide plays that look and feel the same quite often.

The amount of user control on the field is amazing and the spot on commentary is just even more to celebrate.

Each team plays DIFFERENTLY...each QB feels different...each running back....well you get the point...

I could go into explicit detail about each mode or gameplay elements that are still surprising or how much more enjoyable the franchise mode is in 2K5...or how VIP is still something EA has had an answer for....

It is clear that EA Sports is aiming to get gamers wallets rather than your hearts....

2K5...will own your soul...bottom line. I've written numerous blogs on it...I loved Madden when it was great....but Madden does not stand up to a game 8years old...nor is it as deep....nor is it as refreshing...only the graphics in Madden are better.....

2K5 FOREVER.

The best to EA Sports and their repeated 3 year plans and their loyal fans....even the blind ones.

AMEN Hopefully EA and the NFL don't renew their exclusive contract after the season.

Hoping 2k is able to grab an opportunity to create a new NFL game when EA's exclusive license it up.

I'm sorry, 2k5 is a great game (I still own it) and it's game play is good (it has it's problems) not to mention the greatest presentation to date (Madden 13 is VERY close though)

But it gets boring real fast sometimes. The terrible rookies that look the same, the recycled animations in the highlight reel, and even the commentary sometimes, the freakin' super inflated stats (2 QBs throw for 6000+ yards and 60 touchdowns? WTF???). While I believe it's still greater than every Madden since 07, it's not a godly game. I think it's time you get over it. I'm not an EA fan, but I don't blindly hate the things they do either. Madden 13 is a great game to me.

@TreyIM2: Get over it....I think I past it at this point. Just putting the nail in the coffin.

@DaBlackGoku: Madden 13 is a great game...among Maddens this gen...

It was a good game with a fantastic ahead of it's time presentation. I picked up a copy again last year to see how well it held up and well, it didn't hold up very well.

Where NFL 2K5 outshines Madden 13 is in the presentation department. Madden 13 has made improvements especially the commentary. But it has no halftime/post game show. In addition, the replay system in Madden 13 is absolutely horrendous---replays the most mundane part of the play in slow-slow motion with erratic cuts and horrible angles. For example, there was an interception and it would show only the tackle repeated several times in super slow motion---as if they are just trying show off the fancy graphics and tackles.

I love 2K5... It was light years ahead in presentation and gameplay in 2004.... And still is very enjoyable and my fav football sim of all time. I think though Madden 13 and it's devs are going in the right direction and I hope they keep listening to us NFL fans, gamers and most of all consumers as long as they hold on to the license. I always said competition makes for better results but until then 2K5 holds its place as best football sim... But we all know everything comes to an end... Whether Madden keeps developing or we get another company like 2K to push the envelope we have to be patient and hope for the best... And most of all try to enjoy what we have at hand right now.

2K5 is a game that will go down as one of the greatest sports games of all time. A game that everyone who loves sports games will talk about as long as there are video games.

However, playing the game today it is dated. I played that game into the ground. One of the main reasons was The Crib and to see what I could unlock next. However, the gameplay became stale. The game was too easy.

Don't get me wrong. I am not knocking it at all. But I am enjoying Madden for the first time in years.

I hope, like many, that we get competition back. I don't want EA or 2K to fail. We need both of these companies to thrive to continue to bring us some of the best sports gaming.

@bigsmallwood - Lol. Nah, B. If u were over it, u wouldn't have blogged this. NFL2K5 came out 8yrs ago. 8yrs, B. EVERY year there are blogs, posts, comments, whatever from somebody, somewhere about how 2K5 is better than whatever Madden is present or previously released Madden. I just think it's time to let it go.

Madden 13 is definitely another step in the right direction and it is more than obvious, at least to me, that Madden's game engine is stiff. I've said it before, 2K created a less rigid football game engine so they had more freedom with it and many of those Visual Concept dudes used to work on Madden games so they took what was already a foundation there and expanded upon it when they made the NFL2K engine.

Even still, I never thought 2K5 was all that. I think the icing was way better than the cake, itself. What I think they did great was presentation, commentary and animations. Where they fumbled big time for me was archaic, arcadey controls where u had to charge up ur moves and the players ran around in a circle as if some invisible pole was there if they weren't doing some type of animation, and even the animations became repetitive (that damn stretch out for an extra couple of yards and smile animation comes to mind. Lol). Not to mention that floaty passing (someone mentioned those bombs. I had forgot about that. Lol. Seemed like they were in slo-mo all the time. Heh).
I played more Madden 05 because they were more progressive with the controls, even trying pressure sensitive buttons and true momentum (The 2K5 momentum myth is still funny to me. It was more animation based than true momentum). Controls mean a lot to me when playing a video game.

Either way, it's no more for NFL2K. I still have both games. Hopefully, the NFL will "loose" the exclusivity and 2K will jump back on it. I would love to see that.

I feel what you are saying TreyIM2, but truth is truth homie! Too many people across the world still reference this game. If we are able to see competition again with the NFL, that will be the moment of truth.

I actually thought madden 12 was going in the right direction but then 13 comes around and screws offline control so I went back to my wife 2k5... And to my surprise I'm ok with that
