THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - What a month for the Red Sox and their fans, nobody saw this coming. The Red Sox walk out of August with an incredible 25-3 record, mostly incredible because this team couldn't hit their weight prior to August. The key to victory; offense. After having one of the worst (30th) batting averages in baseball the Red Sox hit .319 as a team in August. Archer is finally in Cy Young contention, and Jackie Bradley Jr. is currently having an amazing season (70R-20HR-70RBI-13SB) for a lead off hitter.

Thanks to the 25-3 record Boston now owns the AL East, and barring a 3-25 September they probably aren't going to surrender the division. The Red Sox are also now 2nd in runs scored (622) and tied for 1st with the Dodgers for runs allowed (439), but LA still owns the best record in baseball at 86-49.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

ST. PETERSBURG, FL - Just a little over a month left to go and Boston hit the road to face a division rival, hopefully wiping them out of the division title race. The Rays would trot out their ace, David Price, in an attempt to keep the division race under 10 games. Chris Archer, once traded away by the Rays, would be very motivated to crush them.

Boston stuck it to Tampa Bay almost immediately, with a Dustin Pedroia double that scored Xander Bogaerts from 1st. Mike Napoli followed Pedroia with a 2R-HR that glanced off the LF foul pole for a 3-0 lead in the 1st. Jackie Bradley Jr. added to their lead in the 2nd with a solo-HR and Victorino made it 5-0 with an RBI single.

Through five and a half innings it looked like yet another Boston blow-out paired with an Archer gem, but the Rays managed to make it interesting in the bottom of 6th. Despite shutting out Tampa Bay, Archer's slider was not cooperating and he was issuing free passes at an alarming rate. It finally caught up to him, putting two men on, and the umps didn't help. With one out Mike Napoli caught a hard line drive to 1st, catching Wil Myers off guard, and rushed toward 1st for the inning ending double play. Myers, trying to get back to the bag, ran into Napoli and knocked him down but the ump failed to call it an out that would end the inning. After a length discussion between Farrell and the umps, the game went on and James Loney hit a 3R-HR. Farrell rushed out and continued his discussion with the umps, and kept discussing until he was thrown out of the game.

Napoli fueled the hot Red Sox offense once again.

Archer, clearly rattled, came back out for the 7th and things were still not going his way. Archer loaded the bases on walks, rarely getting strikes called properly, and then walked Wil Myers on a clear strike three that scored Jayson Werth. Archer would close out the inning and end his day, but 8BB and 4R with only 2H allowed would mar his potential win.

With a 5-4 lead Boston pulled father ahead with a Shane Victorino RBI double that scored Bogaerts from 2nd, and then Will Middlebrooks drove in Victorino to make it 7-4. Grant Balfour came in for the 9th, and he couldn't even get two outs. Mookie Betts hit an RBI double to score Blake Swihart from second, and then Balfour loaded the bases for Napoli. Napoli returned the favor with a Grand Slam that ended Balfour's evening, and capped off a 12-4 beating and a 10 game lead in the AL East.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

CLEVELAND, OH - With August coming to a close, things couldn't be better for the Red Sox. A 19-3 record in August has stunned everyone and put Boston in the AL East drivers seat. A sudden explosion in offense, along with their already excellent pitching, has helped turn this season around. A trip to Cleveland, and a date with Danny Salazar, probably wouldn't do much to slow down Chris Archer or the red hot Boston hitters.

Will Middlebrooks started things off in the 2nd inning with a solo-HR, and then Mookie Betts did the same in the 3rd. Dustin Pedroia made it 3-0 Boston with an RBI double after a Xander Bogaerts double to head into the bottom of the 3rd up 3-0.

Archer had little trouble going through the Indians lineup, once again his slider was working for him and keeping the walks down. Salazar managed to hold things together through the 4th, but the 5th inning basically ended the game. After putting two men on with no outs in the 5th Salazar was benched in favor of Josh Beckett. Jakcie Bradley Jr. started things of with an RBI single followed by a Boagerts RBI single and Shane Victorino capped off the carnage with a 3R-HR.

Cleveland had nothing left in the tank, and Archer breezed through 7 scoreless innings with 16K. Today's win gives Boston a sizable AL East lead, but they couldn't possibly continue winning at this pace.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - The Red Sox, now having one hell of a month, head back home this week for a series against the AL East front-runner Texas Rangers. Chris Archer wouldn't be all that intimidated about facing Darvish, but he dodged a bullet by going up against Tanner Scheppers today.

As usual (lately) the Red Sox struck first in the 2nd inning with a Will Middlebrooks 2R-HR, and then he homered again in the 4th to put Boston up 3-0. Blake Swihart added two more with a HR of his own with David Ortiz on 1st to go up 5-0.

Archer, normally prone to walking batter, tore right through the Rangers today with great ease. His issue with walks seems to come down to his nemesis; the slider. When his slider is sweeping across the plate, staying low, and catching the corner of the strike zone it's devastating. When Archer's slider is on, righties can't hit it, but when it's off it's a HR waiting to happen.

Middlebrooks 2HRs powers Boston past Texas.

It took seven innings before the Rangers managed to get on the board, and it took a series of hits to do it, with Leonys Martin driving in a run with a single. Boston came right back with a Dustin Pedroia RBI double to make it 6-1. Archer went 8 strong and finished the game with 6H, one BB, and 17K. Archer's strikeout rate has gone from a streak to a season long phenomenon, and the single-season K record is starting to look like a possibility.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

TORONTO, ON - Baseball is a fickle game. One week you can't hit to save your life, and the next you seem to hit when you aren't even trying. After months of failing to catch a break the Red Sox have caught on fire, going 10-2 this month. The Red Sox came into the game today with a half game lead in the AL East, and a win would give them the other half. The Blue Jays, starting former Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy, are officially headed in the wrong direction. If anyone needed to win tonight it was Toronto, but Chris Archer wasn't going to lay down.

Archer and Peavy exchanged shutout innings to start the game, but Boston opened the scoring in the 2nd with two HR. Will Middlebrooks started things off with a solo-HR and Blake Swihart made it 3-0 with a 2R-HR after a David Ortiz double. The Blue Jays came right back in the 3rd with an RBI double by Edwin Encarnacion, thanks to Jackie Bradley Jr. missing a fly ball, and then Jose Bautista drove in Encarnacion to make it 3-2.

The Red Sox were not impressed and hammered Peavy in the 4th. Ortiz slammed a 2R-HR followed by Bradley Jr. hitting an RBI double with two on. Boston kept the hits coming when Swihart smacked a solo-HR in the 6th, and a Bradley Jr. triple paired with a Xander Bogaerts single made it 8-2.

All-Star snub Swihart is having an incredible rookie season.

While the Red Sox were finally hitting Archer was putting on a show of his own. Despite allowing 2R, he only allowed a single BB and practically struck out two batters an inning. Swihart added to his amazing day with a 2RBI double in the 7th, giving Archer a 10-2 lead. Archer stayed in for the 8th and used it to make history by striking out 21 Blue Jays. Archer becomes the first to strike out 21 in a 9 inning game, tying Tom Cheney (1962) who did it in 16 innings.

Torii Hunter added to Toronto's misery with a solo-HR in the 9th, but the Blue Jays wouldn't be shut out. Another former Red Sox player, David Ross, would put the Blue Jays on the board with and RBI double thanks to another Bradley Jr. mistake. Whent he dust cleared Swihart finished 5/5 with 2HR and 5RBI.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - Things are going well for the Red Sox in August, already 5-2 so far and a series against the middling White Sox coming up. Chris Archer, after a rough outing against Baltimore, would face Marco Gonzalez and try to turn his season around.

Boston started off on the right foot with a 2R-HR from Mike Napoli with Dustin Pedroia on base to start the 1st with a 2-0 lead. Archer cruised and things got even better in the third when Napoli, Will Middlebrooks, and David Ortiz combined for stunning back-to-back-to-back solo-HRs and a 5-0 lead.

Archer, clearly over the outing against the Orioles, blew right through the White Sox lineup. Archer shut out Chicago, a Napoli sac fly in the 7th and a Blake Swihart solo-HR in the 8th gave him a 7-0 lead to basically seal the game. Chicago rallied to score a run off Ranaudo in the 9th, a Ben Coats RBI that drove in Dayan Viciedo, but it was much too little too late.

Napoli's 2HR 4RBI day powered Boston to a victory.

Boston's offense seems to be coming around, with 14 hits and 5HR today. Hopefully this trend holds and they can pass Tampa Bay for the division lead.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BALTIMORE, MD - The AL East race continues to be tight with Boston traveling to Baltimore today. The Rays continue to sit atop the division, but the race is starting to be about more than just the division. The Wild Card is starting to shape up and the AL East is just outside of sending multiple teams to the playoffs. In the NL the Dodgers have asserted themselves and hold baseball's best record (70-38) with the Diamondbacks (66-43) just behind them.

With the Orioles in danger of fading out of the race, this game would be important for them. With Archer and Weaver facing off again, everyone expected this game to be exciting, but nobody would believe how exciting. Boston struck right away, putting together a Jackie Bradley Jr. double with a Xander Bogaerts single to take a 1-0 lead after the 1st.

The second inning would give everyone a taste of what was coming, but Baltimore fans would have to wait. Shane Victorino hit a double and David Ortiz brought him in with a 2R-HR to take a 3-0 lead. Even with Archer on the mound, the Orioles came right back with a little help from Boston. Archer promptly loaded the bases and gave up a 2RBI double, and then Will Middlebrooks fielded a weak grounder from Adam Jones and seemed to forget the game was still going. The Orioles scored thanks to Middlebrooks and made it 3-3.

Archer and Weaver slogged through the 3rd before more fireworks in the 4th. Victorino gave Boston the lead with a solo-HR, but Chris Davis pulled Baltimore ahead with a stunning 3R-HR that left Archer visibly upset. Archer finished the inning, but after 7H and 6ER his day was done in favor of Anthony Ranaudo. Weaver probably wished he had taken a seat as well, but he came out for the 5th and got lit up like a Christmas tree. Bogaerts and Bradley teamed up at the top of the order with an RBI single to make it 6-4, and then a Pedroia single scored Bogaerts on a hit-and-run play to make it 6-5. Weaver put another man on before Middlebrooks drove in Pedroia, and with the game tied and only two out Weaver was pulled for Keven Slowey. Slowey, if you can believe it, was much worse. Ortiz gave Boston the lead with a towering 3R-HR, and Blake Swihart capped off a 7 run inning with a solo-HR for an 11-6 lead.

Ortiz isn't ready to retire just yet.

Ranaudo pitched well, shutting out Baltimore until the 7th when Nolan Reimold drove in a runner. The Orioles looked to score another but JJ Hardy was thrown out at home to end the inning. The 8th inning was basically the final nail in Baltimore's coffin. Bradley would drive in Mookie Betts after a 2B-SB combo would let him score easily from third, and then Bradley would make it to third himself after a throwing error on a pick-off attempt.

With the score 12-7 n the 9th the Orioles would tag one more on, but it was clearly too little too late. When the dust had settled the game would total 20 runs and 29 hits, almost unthinkable with the way the Red Sox had been hitting and pitching.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

Player (Prospect Grade - John Sickels, Current Level)

3B, Garin Cecchini (Grade : B+, AAA Pawtucket)

Not much news here, hitting has ticked up a bit to .256. 14HR and 26SB, made the MiLB All-Star team.

SS, Chris Owings (Grade : B+, AAA Pawtucket)

Similar to Cecchini, continues steady climb toward the majors. Hitting .275 with 8HR and 11SB, made the MiLB All-Star team.

RHP, Leonys Bravo (Grade : B+, AAA Pawtucket)

Looks like the Red Sox may have to pump the brakes on Bravo as he finally struggles. 1-2 mark with a 6.28ERA is quite a jump, though the organization still believes in him these are the first signs of mortality. With a 22K:6BB ratio in 14.1IP nobody is writing him off, but he will need to work on his secondary pitches instead of breezing by on his fastball-change up combo.

RHP, Braden Shipley (Grade : B+, MLB)

LHP, Henry Owens (Grade : B+, AAA Pawtucket)

Owens has been hot in the past month with a 5-0 record in July to bring his season up to 9-6. Dropped his ERA and WHIP down to 2.79 and 1.19, starting to look more and more like he starts 2016 in the majors.

LHP, Trey Ball (Grade : B, AAA Pawtucket)

Still getting beat up, but the stuff is still great and probably won't be demoted. Still needs to work on his command, but Boston is very committed to his future.

RHP, Braxton Davis (Grade : B-, AAA Pawtucket)

Going toe-to-toe with Owens with very similar numbers. 8-5, 2.75ERA, 119WHIP, 121K:52BB.

1B, Issac Koufax (Grade : B-, AAA Pawtucket)

AAA has been a little harder for the fast rising 1B, hitting only .268 with a single HR in July. Small sample size, but starting to look mortal at the plate.

RHP, Allen Webster (Grade : C+, AAA Pawtucket)

Still dragging his feet, rumors are that Boston have been discussing trade options for the off-season.

3B/OF, Rico Berroa (Grade : C+, AAA Pawtucket)

Hitting .364 with 4SB since coming up, nobody is jumping to conclusions yet on his hitting, but defense still remains his strength.

SS, Pedro Santana (Grade : C+, AA Portland)

Hitting .299 with 3HR and 13SB, won't be in AA past this season with Owings / Cecchini expected to be promoted. Ceiling is most likely a .270 hitter with 30SB and Gold Glove caliber defense.

Players Making Noise

RHP, Roddy Gibson (Grade : C+, AA Portland)

A stop in Portland might have been aiming too low, if AAA rotation wasn't full the Red Sox probably should have moved him there. 3-1 record in July with a 1.86ERA and a Bravo-esque 26K:6BB ratio in 29IP.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

SEATTLE, WA - It's deja vu all over again as Chris Archer took the mound today against the Mariners again, this time it's at SafeCo Field. Felix Hernandez would get his shot at revenge, and with Boston still struggling to hit he would probably get his way. At this point in the season Boston probably isn't "struggling" or "cold", the team is going to have to accept that they just aren't good on offense this year.

Things were looking up for the Red Sox when a Xander Bogaerts sac fly in the 3rd gave them a 1-0. Most teams wouldn't lean on a single run lead, but Archer was absolutely on fire today no hitting the Mariners through the 3rd. Hernandez struggled with his command, and thanks to his inability to get ahead in the count he couldn't get out of the 6th. Shane Victorino and David Ortiz each hit solo-HR off Hernandez, both on 3-1 counts, and Hernandez took a seat after 5.2IP.

Boston was practically high-fiving themselves up 3-0, especially with Archer carrying a no-hitter through the 6th. Unfortunately for Boston, the BB Monster reared it ugly head and Archer put two on in the 7th with Carlos Quentin coming up. Archer had him on a 2-2 count and tried to sneak a fastball high and inside, but Quentin was waiting for it and parking the ball in the stands for a 3R-HR that tied the game.

Quetin's three-run shot killed Boston.

Archer came back out for the 8th, hoping to staunch the bleeding and give Boston a shot at scoring, but things only got worse. Archer walked two more, bringing his total to 4, and Robinson Cano hit an RBI single to give Seattle the lead. Jackie Bradley Jr. capped of the horrible inning by blowing a "can of corn" pop fly that would have ended the inning but instead became a 2RBI triple for Corey Hart. Boston had nothing and Seattle cruised to an easy 6-3 victory.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - Boston fans were in for a treat today with the Seattle Mariners coming to Fenway. On the mound opposite Chris Archer would be Felix Hernandez. This was going to be a rough game for Boston, and it would put even more pressure on Archer to keep them in the game.

Things started off poorly for Boston with Shane Victorino fouling up a ball to RF that turned into a Willie Bloomquist double. Robinson Cano followed it up with a double of his own to make it 1-0 right off the bat. Dustin Pedroia evened the score in the bottom of the 1st with a solo-HR and we were back at a pitchers duel.

Until the 7th Archer and Hernandez combined to allow five hits between them. Luckily for Boston, things would finally go their way in the bottom of the inning. With Will Middlebrooks on 1st David Ortiz would hammer a 2R-HR that bounded off Pesky's Pole to give the Red Sox a 3-1 lead and knock King Felix out of the game.

Big Papi... so clutch.

Archer would go 8 innings and strike out 15 Mariners, another stunning performance. Uehara would come in and easily lock up the win. Despite Archer's performance the hero of the day was Pedroia, who went 3/4 with a HR and a SB.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - With the mid-season break behind them the Red Sox opened at home with yet another NL Central foe. The Chicago Cubs limped into Boston for a four-game series, and with a 45-50 record the Red Sox and Chris Archer would be penciling in a win. Former Oakland A's pitcher Jarrod Parker, coming off a Tommy John's surgery in 2014, would start for the Cubs.

Boston opened the scoring in the first with a Jackie Bradley Jr. lead-off HR, and things looked to be on their way. Archer, his usual self, showed improved command and struck out five Cubs over the next two scoreless innings.

Parker settled down after the HR in the first and held Boston in check until the 3rd when Wellington Castillo finally got to Archer with an RBI single to tie the game. Starlin Castro followed that up with an RBI single of his own to score Castro who had advanced to second. Archer settled back into his groove, using his slider more regularly, and held off the Cubs until the 6th inning. With a man on 1st Archer hung a slider right over the plate and Justin Ruggiano stroked it to RF for an RBI double and a 3-1 lead.

Parker dominated the struggling Boston offense.

Boston just didn't have any answers today and completely wasted another Archer performance that ended in 14K. Rule 5 pick Braden Shipley came in for the 8th and 9th inning and shut out the Cubs. The Red Sox could not string any hits together and made Parker look like Clayton Kershaw. Jose Veras came in for the 9th and easily ended Boston's miserable day.

CINCINNATI, OH - Another year, another sad All-Star game for Red Sox fans, at least this year there is some contraversy. Only one Red Sox player made it to Cincinnati this year, but it really should have been two. Chris Archer was a no-brainer, and started the game, but MLB robbed Blake Swihart of a roster spot and they don't have a decent reason for doing it. Swihart, having an incredible rookie season, finished second in the votes for Catcher but was passed over for Yan Gomes who finished fourth. Jason Castro finished third, but he is Houston's only All-Star.

Archer did better his second time in Great America Ballpark.

A decent game with a little back-and-forth ending with a lengthy comeback by the AL. Archer started the game and went three innings without allowing a hit, walking one, and striking out four. After Casey Janssen allowed the NL to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth the AL game back with one run innings in the 6th and 8th. It went into the 11th when Adam Jones, the MVP, hit a solo-HR to give the AL a 3-2 win and home field advantage in October.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - The All Star break is here and not a moment too soon for the ailing Red Sox offense. They have hit so poorly it's a wonder they win any games, but their pitching has been great, so great that the AL East is still within their grasp. It's going to be a tough run to the end of the season with five teams within 5 games of the division lead, everyone but the Yankees have a shot.

The AL East has lost a little shine, losing the "hardest division" crown to the NL West for the moment. Fans can always fall back on the "they are so good they hurt eachother's records" argument, but it's hard to deny the Dodgers and Diamondbacks. LA (61-34) and Arizona (59-37) hold the best records in baseball, and if 2014 is any indication it won't change between now and the end of the season.

Mid-Season MiLB Moves

Not too many surprises down on the farm, most of the big moves have been in the works for some time. The vast majority of the moves involved bringing guys from AA Portland to AAA Pawtucket in anticipation of a shot at making the majors in 2016.

RHP Leonys Bravo : Promoted to AAA after breezing through a half-season in Portland. 12-3, 2.15ERA and 194K in 150.2IP. Time to see if he will be ready for 2016 or if 2017/18 is more likely.

1B Isaac Koufax : Nobody blocking him in Pawtucket, so Boston felt they might as well give him a shot. Glove can play at any level, but his .299BA with 18HR has really surprised evaluators.

OF Rico Berroa : Much like Koufax, nobody blocking him and can play defense in the majors right now. .291BA and 17SB were eye openers and helped him earn a promotion to AAA.

RHP Roddy Gibson : Looked better than expected through Rookie and Class A-Advanced, moves into a AA Portland rotation that was decimated by promotions to start 2015 and instantly becomes their ace. Really exciting young talent that has coaches buzzing.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

CHICAGO, IL - The Red Sox headed back to the AL Central this week for a showdown with the White Sox, and they would need to keep winning if they wanted to keep things close in the East. Archer, coming off three straight games where he has struck out 14 or more would have to continue pitching well. Torii Hunter would get the nod in LF today with Mookie Betts needing a day off.

Outside of Archer, this game was pretty boring while highlighting some of Boston's issues with scoring runs. Boston opened the scoring in the 1st thanks to a throwing error that put Jackie Bradley Jr. on 2nd, and then a Xander Bogaerts single drove him in. Blake Swihart would make it 2-0 in the 2nd with an RBI double that would easily score Hunter from 3rd.

Bradley Jr. is quietly having a very good season.

Archer cruised through the White Sox hitters, walking a few but striking out most of them. Bogaerts made it 3-0 in the 5th with a solo-HR and Archer took a seat after 7IP. Archer finished the day with a single hit, 4BB, and 16K which puts him on a record shattering pace. Bradley Jr. added a solo-HR of his own in the 9th and Boston closed out the game 4-0 on another Archer gem. Bogaerts was the only Boston player that did much, going 3/5 with a HR, 2RBI, and 2SB. The Red Sox hammered out 12 hits but only managed 4 runs.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

KANSAS CITY, MO - The Red Sox hit the road for a long trip through the AL Central, and their first stop was a date with James Shields. Chris Archer has been as hot as any pitcher could be after his last two starts, but with Boston's hitting almost non-existent he might need to be even better.

Archer and Shields went at it right away, with Shields using his off speed arsenal to keep Boston's hitters grounding out and popping up. Archer, as usual, picked at the corners and racked up strikeout after strikeout along with a walk or two mixed in. Finally in the 6th inning someone broke the deadlock, Eric Hosmer waited patiently until Archer missed on a fastball high and tight that ended up right over the plate and finished in the outfield grass.

Shields was very sharp today.

Shields left after 6.2IP having shut out the Red Sox, and Archer left after collecting 14K in 7IP and allowing only the single run. The pens duked it out, with Boston continuing to struggle, and then Greg Holland came in to finish things off. In the end Boston outhit the Royals, but they just couldn't string anything together.
