THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - The past month has been very busy, and division races are starting to come into shape. Boston finds itself two games back of Baltimore for 1st in the AL East. Despite being 2nd, Boston (and Baltimore) aren't that far back of the best record in baseball (36-21) held by the Dodgers. It's looking like if Boston is going to repeat as world champions the road will go through Los Angeles.

Orioles3322-

Rays31263.0

Blue Jays26317.0

The Red Sox roster looked a little different for today's game. Chris Archer, who was struggling at 5-4 with a 4.35ERA, was sent down to AAA Pawtucket and John Lackey has reclaimed his spot in the rotation. SS Brock Holt was called back up to take Archer's roster spot.

As expected, when the Rays start one of their talented pitchers, this game turned into a pitching duel. Despite his best efforts, and numerous strike outs, Lester gave up a solo-HR to Ben Zobrist in the 4th and another run in the 5th to fall behind 2-0. Alex Cobb pitched very well, allowing only singles and inducing weak ground outs that left Boston feeling helpless. Lester failed to finish the 7th, and Mujica had to come in to get the final two outs.

Lester wouldn't be the only one who couldn't get out of the 7th, as Alex Cobb started to struggle and left the game for Jake McGee with two men on. Jonny Gomes came in to pinch hit against Jake McGee, and made the most of it with a 3R-HR to take a 3-2 lead. McGee allowed another before finishing the inning to fall behind 4-2. Mujica got the game to the 9th and Uehara shut the door for his 18th save.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

Two months out of the way and everyone is starting to round into form. No major injuries in the majors, so nobody has been promoted to fill in at this point.

Player (Prospect Grade - John Sickels, Current Level)

3B, Garin Cecchini (Grade : B+, AAA Pawtucket)

Good offensive numbers (27R 8HR 27RBI) make an unspectacular BA (.266) palatable. Continues to steal bases (10) with a decent K:BB ratio (21:33).

LHP, Henry Owens (Grade : B+, AA Portland)

Did not have a great month of May (34.1IP 3.93ERA), but overall numbers are still very good

RHP, Anthony Ranaudo (Grade : B, AAA Pawtucket)

Not having a good start to the season, 5.48ERA in 69.0IP is highlighted by 31BB. Needs to improve his command and show more mastery of his secondary pitches.

2B, Mookie Betts (Grade : B, AAA Pawtucket)

Still listed as a 2B, but getting equal playing time at RF. Boston seems to be prepping him for a future of not-being-as-good-as Dustin Pedroia, which is fair. His work at the plate isn't going to unseat Pedroia for sure, or really anyone, hitting .266 with 4HR and 26RBI.

C, Blake Swihart (Grade : B, AA Portland)

Swihart continues to hit well, but a strained finger has prevented him from playing regularly. 6HR and 32RBI while hitting .304 will probably get him to AAA at some point this season.

RHP, Allen Webster (Grade : B-, AAA Pawtucket)

Struggling much like Ranaudo, 6.23ERA and a 29:44 BB:K ratio isn't helping his season. Also needs to show more command of his secondary pitches.

RHP, Matt Barnes (Grade : B-, AAA Pawtucket)

Looking like the Pawtucket ace at 3-2 with a 2.74ERA. 63K in 85.1IP, definitely impressing coaches.

LHP, Trey Ball (Grade : B-, AA Portland)

All of his numbers look great, 4.50ERA a little deceptive, dominating hitters but having back luck with hits occurring with men on base. Only 28BB in 78.0IP is a good sign for such a young pitcher.

Players Making Noise

RHP, Brandon Workman (Grade : B-, AAA Pawtucket)

Workman, who already has a little over 40IP in the majors under his belt, is starting to look like he deserves more. Despite being seen as less talented than fellow RHP Allen Webster, he could beat him to The Show if he continues to pitch well. The organization sees him as a reliever going forward, but that could change.

LHP, Drake Britton (Grade : C+, AAA Pawtucket)

Drake has pitched well and garnered some attention. Probably a reliever long-term, but still valuable as a lefty. If Britton finishes the season strong he could get a September call-up.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

ATLANTA, GA - Jon Lester must have angered the Baseball Gods at some point, forcing them to match him up against the best young pitchers everyone has to offer. This time it was Mike Minor, and Boston would have their hands full for most of the game.

Perhaps it was the warm Georgia night, but both teams did a massive amount of swinging at air. Both teams cruised through three innings without generating much offense, the stalemate was finally broken in the 4th with a Shane Victorino solo-HR, but a rally by Atlanta evened the score 1-1 in the 6th. Lester was pulled after the 6th, having 12K and a whopping 124 pitches thrown to get those K's, and that was Atlanta's opening. Mike Minor finished the 7th, with 9K of his own, and Edward Mujica gave up a run in the bottom of the inning to put Minor in a position to claim a win.

Grady Sizemore became the story of this game, starting with a mistake in the outfield that allowed Jason Heyward's single to turn into a triple and score BJ Upton from 1st. Will Middlebrooks became a hero in the 8th with a solo-HR that brought the score to 2-2, but Sizemore struck again and took a bad angle to a ball that allowed Andrelton Simmons to go from 1st to home and take a 3-2 lead. Enter Craig Kimbrel, exit Sizemore (pop-out) and Bradley (K) to bring up the pitchers slot. Farrell, playing the percentages, would put in lefty Daniel Nava over Mike Napoli to face Kimbrel. It would pay off all the way from home plate to just over the RF wall, but not far enough, as Heyward would make the leap and rob the game tying run. Game over.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - A rainy day at Fenway would be the site for today's matchup with the Toronto Blue Jays. Lester had already faced off against one of the Jays' best pitchers (Hutchison), and today he would face rookie stud Marcus Stroman. Stroman hasn't been particularly amazing so far, but he is sticking in the rotation and getting better with the mental side of the game.

This game basically boiled down to a pitcher's duel where both offenses liked to swing at air. Mike Napoli was the only player immune to Stroman's 2-seam fastball, going 4/4 on the day. With a 1-0 lead going into the 5th inning, Dustin Pedroia and Mike Napoli hit solo-HR to bookend an Ortiz ground-out and expand the lead to 3-0. The rest of the game was very dull offensively, with Lester going 7.0 innings and striking out 9 with only a single hit and BB allowed. The Tazawa-Uehara connection closed out the 8th and 9th to wrap this one up.

Lester is currently enjoying a run of starts that move him into the AL Cy Young conversation. With a 6-2 record, 2.44ERA, and a 0.97WHIP he could find himself passing Texas' Yu Darvish in the voting.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - Jon Lester just cannot catch a break this season, and now he has to face off against another solid team in the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers currently boast the AL's best record, and with some of th best hitters in the game, they wouldn't surrender that title easily.

Detroit's Rick Porcello would face off against Lester, going pitch-for-pitch until things got interesting in the 3rd inning. Lester would load the bases, and come up against the heart of Detroit's order, but work his way to safety by managing three outs and no runs allowed. Porcello on the other hand would give up a solo-HR to AJ Pierzynski. Lester would finally crack, giving up two runs in the 6th to fall behind 2-1 and end his day there having thrown over 100 pitches already.

Boston would lean on Ortiz in the 7th for a solo-HR, and both teams would cruise through the 9th tied 2-2. Junichi Tazawa would stay in after throwing a perfect 9th inning, and Manager John Farrell would soon regret that decision. Tazawa would struggle mightily, giving up a run and walking Miguel Cabrera to load the bases for Victor Martinez. Martinez would return the favor with a towering grand slam that landed on Lansdowne Street and ended the game in the 10th 7-2.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

ARLINGTON, TX - The tour of baseball hell continues as the Texas Rangers welcome the Red Sox to a warm Texas night. Lester had been hot since being battered around by the Yankees, and he would need to be solid tonight against a heavy-hitting Rangers lineup. The only bright side to this game was Texas starting the struggling Tanner Scheppers, so Boston's 5-2 run might keep going.

Shin-Soo Choo would get things going right away in the first, driving in Elvis Adrus from second to take a 1-0 lead in the first, and the lead held until the 3rd inning. Scheppers had managed to keep Boston from getting hits, but he finally broke down in the third by walking Middlebrookes and allowing a hit from Victorino, who were then driven in by AJ Pierzynski with a hard hit double to RF. Scheppers managed to settle down in the 4th, but the 5th was the end of his evening. After striking out Bradley Jr., and giving up singles to Bogaerts and Pedroia, David Ortiz hit a towering shot to LF for a 3R-HR and a 5-1 lead.

Choo can only watch Ortiz's HR

Texas managed another run in the 5th, but Boston took back two more and looked to be cruising to victory. Lester took a seat afte 6.0IP and 8K, and Mujica closed out the 7th. Then, things got tense, as Mujica completely lost it and loaded the bases on three straight walks. Choo, again, would step up and hit a 2RBI double to bring Texas within three. One more run would come in before Koji Uehara could come in and save the day. Uehara would clean up Mujica's mess and record a two inning save to give Lester his 5th win and take over 1st in the AL East.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - The Red Sox completed their second trade of the season with a real stunner, as the St. Louis Cardinals opted to part with 23-year-old SP Shelby Miller. The Red Sox sent 2B/SS Ryan Roberts (AAA Pawtucket) to St. Louis in exchange for Miller, who is currently 3-3 with a 3.52ERA and 31K.

The addition of Miller could be huge in 2014 and beyond

Perhaps the Cardinals know something about Miller that caused them to let him go, they are struggling at 2B so Roberts fills a need, but Miller had a very good season in 2013 (15-9, 3.01ERA 169K and a 1.20WHIP) and figured to be a mainstay in their rotation. Miller brings an influx of youth to the Boston rotation, most likely pushing the struggling Jon Lackey to the pen.

This trade is an excellent win-now move combined with an eye on the future. Miller, 23, has a very promising future after a break-out 2013 season. With Miller as a nominal Ace-in-waiting the red Sox will not have to press their minor league arms into the rotation until they are ready.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - The Red Sox can't seem to catch a break lately, going from a double dose of the Yankees to Toronto on the road, and now a visit from the Oakland A's. Is that wasn't bad enough, Oakland's wunderkind Sonny Gray would take the mound.

The game started off with some excitement as Gray showed his youth, allowing a run in the 1st (Pedrioa drives in Bogaerts from 2nd) and narrowly escaped a bases loaded jam without allowing any more. Gray looked good, inducing many ground outs, but allowed a second run in the 3rd. Meanwhile Jon Lester was shutting out the A's, struggling a little with command as he issued four walks on the day.

Not much happened until the bottom of the 7th, both teams played good defense and their pitching looked good. Gray left the game for Sean Doolittle in the 7th, and Boston jumped on Doolittle to put the game away. Dustin Pedroia (4/4 on the day) hit a solo-HR to add to his 1st inning RBI total, and Will Middlebrooks really polished him off with a 2R-HR (bringing his RBI total to 3) in the 8th. In the end Lester and Andrew Miller combined for a 3H shutout to give Lester his 4th win and Miller's 1st save.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

The season is well under way, so it's time to take a look at how Boston's future is shaping up. Overall, the Red Sox have one of the top farm systems in baseball with a good variety of depth and high-end prospects. They are especially deep in pitching, with a mix of LHP and RHP a few years away from being ready for the Majors. Considering the current roster, and the guys in AAA who wouldn't really be considered "prospects" at this point in their career, we probably won't see any of these guys in 2014 unless someone gets injured.

Player (Prospect Grade - John Sickels, Current Level)

3B, Garin Cecchini (Grade : B+, AAA Pawtucket)

Cecchini probably has the best shot at making the majors based purely on roster construction, but he is generally considered Boston's highest rated prospect who isn't currently in the majors. His hitting and plate discipline are very good, and should hold up at the next level, but he doesn't have as much power as you would like from a 3B. So far he has hit over .300, with a .322 mark in A-Advanced and AA during 2013, and steals an impressive number of bases. His 2014 season has started off a little slowly, hitting .267 with a single SB and a 10:14 BB:K ration.

LHP, Henry Owens (Grade : B+, AA Portland)

Boston's 1st round pick from 2011, and still just 21, Owens looks like the real deal. His walk rate moved in the wrong direction in 2013, but he can be a strike out machine at times. So far this season he is 1-1 with a 3.92ERA and 37K in 38.2IP. If Owens continues to pitch well he should see some time in AAA, but the Red Sox aren't in a hurry to get him to the majors so most expect him to have a better shot in 2016 after a full year in AAA.

RHP, Anthony Ranaudo (Grade : B, AAA Pawtucket)

Another solid pitching prospect who has a good 2013 season. Has some health concerns, but he if can perform well through this season he should have a shot at getting into Boston's rotation for 2015. Rough start to the season going 1-3 with a 5.54ERA and 34K in 37.1IP.

2B, Mookie Betts (Grade : B, AAA Pawtucket)

Betts, Boston's second best position player, is a bit of an enigma. After failing to hit a HR in his first 72 games in the minors he followed it up with a 15HR season between A-Advanced and A ball, so it's hard to tell which one is the real Betts. With Dustin Pedroia signed through 2021 it's hard to tell where Betts plays, he could make a move to the OF. Betts has started the season hitting .262 with a single HR and 14RBI.

C, Blake Swihart (Grade : B, AA Portland)

Swihart was a 1st rounder out of highschool in 2011 and the Red Sox have been bringing him along slowly, but the trade of Lavarway may have accelerated his time-table. He didn't show much power when he was drafted, but scouts have always felt he should develop some pop, and he has certainly shown that so far this season. Swihart has been hitting .351 for AA Portland, if he continues to play this well he should be promoted to AAA Pawtucket. He has always been good with his glove, so it will be interesting to see how well he manages games in AAA. With only AJ Pierzynski and David Ross above him, the Red Sox may need Swihart in the majors sooner than expected.

RHP, Allen Webster (Grade : B-, AAA Pawtucket)

Good arm strength with some command issues, but still a promising player. Started seven games (30.1IP) for Boston in 2013, but was brutalized by major league hitting. Has room to improve, best case scenario he becomes a useful starter or dependable reliever. Worst case scenario he gets lost in the shuffle and loses out to the bevy of pitching prospects around him.

RHP, Matt Barnes (Grade : B-, AAA Pawtucket)

Barnes is probably the first guy from this group to get called up, he could use some time in AAA to sharpen his approach, but Boston will probably start him in the pen before moving him into the rotation. Barnes has started the season 1-1 with a 2.36ERA and a 1.26WHIP.

LHP, Trey Ball (Grade : B-, AA Portland)

Athletic, throws hard, lefty, 7th overall in 2013, Ball has everything you could want in a pitching prospect. He starts off the season in AA, but he could push Barnes for first-to-the-majors if he has a spectacular 2014 season. Currently 2-1 with a 3.64ERA.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

TORONTO, ON - After a rough stretch, and the shame of losing to the Yankees, Boston faced off against division foe Toronto. The Blue Jays, themselves hovering around .500, would start promising youngster Drew Hutchison. Hutchison is fighting with fellow Blue Jay Marcus Stroman for future-ace honors, and the slumping Red Sox would be a prime target for his third win.

Hutchison would pitch well, but not quite well enough to win this one. After taking a 1-0 lead on a Macier Izturis solo-HR in the 2nd Boston would come back to tie the game in the 3rd and Grady Sizemore would hit a 2R shot for a 3-1 lead. Hutchison steadied the ship, allowing 8 hits over 5.0IP, and looked like a true ace-to-be. Lester on the other hand, looked like a very solid veteran, and blanked Toronto over 6IP with only 2H and 8K.

The normally reliable Uehara was a little off

Edward Mujica would come in for Lester in the 7th and shut out the Blue Jays through the 9th, then Koji Uehara would come in and make the game interesting again. Uehara's normally devastating splitter was off, and Uehara struggled to get two outs before allowing a hit and a walk to bring the winning run to the plate. Uehara's splitter came back just in time to induce a game-ending ground out and nab Lester's third win.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - The Red Sox announced a stunning trade today with the aquisition of SP Chris Archer from the Tampa Bay Rays. C Ryan Lavarnway (AAA Pawtucket) was sent in exchange for Archer, a real no-brainer move for the Red Sox that bolsters their rotation.

Archer has struggled this season (3-2, 5.70ERA with 23K), but even if he continues to struggle and gets sent down to AAA this feels like a win-win scenario as C Blake Swihart (AA Portland) is looking more and more like he will pass Lavarnway in the pecking order.

The aquisition of Archer pushes Felix Doubront, who has been servicable this year, into the bullpen. Boston also annouced that SS/3B Brock Holt has been optioned to AAA Pawtucket to make room for Archer. Doubront has pitched out of the pen in the past, this move gives Boston good options in long relief with Chris Capuano currently shouldering the vast majority of that role.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - The Yankees came to town this week, their second series against Boston this month, and after going 3-5 since their last meeting they would be motivated to win in Fenway. Over the same period the Red Sox went 7-2, including a 2-1 record against Baltimore, and would love to get revenge for Lester's last loss.

For the second time in three starts, the Yankees owned Lester from the 1st inning. The Yankees would hammer Boston's ace for 3 in the first inning, and follow it up with three more by the 4th (which Lester failed to get out of). 9H in 3.1IP and Lester was back on the bench licking his wounds. Teixiera would be Lester's biggest problem, hitting a 3R HR in the first and a 2R shot in the 3rd to rack up 5RBI.

Despite allowing 2 in the first, the Yankees and starter David Phelps had this one pretty much wrapped up. Sizemore tried to get Boston back in the game with a 2R HR in the 7th, ending Phelps' day, but it just wasn't enough to rescue Lester from his second loss of the season.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

NEW YORK, NY - With a four game losing streak hanging over their heads, the Red Sox traveled to the last place they wanted to be. The Yankees, fully loaded after free agency, were licking their chops to get at Boston. The Red Sox had just been swept 0-3 at Texas, and after a 5-1 start they were right back to .500.

The game started off well, Lester pitching effectively and the offense giving him a three-run lead heading into the bottom of the 4th. That is when things started to turn sour, and the defense was mostly to blame. The Yankees pushed Lester hard by driving up his pitch count and drawing out at-bats waiting for the right pitches. It finally payed off when Grady Sizemore bungled an easy fly ball to LF and the normally steady Jackey Bradler Jr. did the same, allowing two runners to score in the process.

Lester came back in to pitch the 5th, but he wouldn't finish the inning. More defensive miscues put Yankees on base, allowing Ellsbury and Gardener to score, and then Brian McCann finished Lester off. With a man on McCann took Lester deep, giving the Yankees a 6-3 lead and bringing Andrew Miller out of the pen to relieve Lester. Miller wasn't stellar at first, allowing another two runs, but he finished the game without allowing any more. CC Sabathia, despite allowing 3R and 9H, was excellent and kept Boston from getting solid contact all game.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BOSTON, MA - The Red Sox closed out their three-game series today with the Brewers, and the weather couldn't have been more perfect. Boston would drop the home opener on Friday, their first blemish of the season, but today would turn out to be historic for the Red Sox.

It only took two batters in the bottom of the 1st for the first milestone of the game as Dustin Pedroia hammered a two-run HR on to Lansdowne Street for the 100th of his career. It may have been the fireworks, but Matt Garza just never recovered and looked imminently hittable for the few innings he pitched. The Red Sox scored three more in the 2nd and one more in the 3rd and 4th, sending Garza to the locker room with 7ER in just 3.2IP.

Lester's no-hitter put the Brewers away

While Pedroia's 100th was a big deal, it was quickly overshadowed by Jon Lester's pitching performance. The two-run shot in the first was more than enough for Boston to win as Lester tossed a near-perfect game that ended as a no-hitter. The Brewers just could not hit Lester, despite all their efforts, and ended the game with a whopping 15K. The perfection was lost in the 7th with a BB to Jean Segura, and a fielding error by Will Middlebrooks that put Ryan Braun on base. Lester managed to strike out the next batter and never looked back.

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

BALTIMORE, MD - The Boston Red Sox opened their title defense today at Camden Yards with Jon Lester on the mound and high hopes of starting out on the right foot. Lester would match up against Miguel Gonzalez in the game and try to continue the momentum from 2014.

It only took three batters to ruin Baltimore's home opener, and Gonzalez's day, as David Ortiz opened the scoring with a solo shot in the 1st inning. Mike Napoli tried to follow Ortiz, but a deep blast to center was robbed by Adam Jones, reaching over the wall to take away a would-be HR. Daniel Nava continued the scoring with a solo shot of his own, the first of two, to give Boston a 2-0 lead in the 2nd.

Gonzalez's day only got worse as Will Middlebrooks blasted a two-run HR in the 4th to make it 4-0, and he was pulled to start the 5th after giving up 8 hits over 4.0IP. Meanwhile, Jon Lester was pitching extremely well and looked like he could finish the game himself. Once Nava added his second HR in the top of the 8th and Boston managed to drive in another to make it 6-0 it was clear that Lester had a win all but locked up.

Junichi Tazawa came in to relieve Lester in the 8th and closed out the game with two scoreless innings to wrap up the game 6-0. Lester finished the game with 7.0IP, only 2 hits, 9K, and his first win of the season. Boston managed 4HR's to crush Baltimore, a rough start to Miguel Gonzalez's season.
