Using NBA 2K9’s Living Rosters on the Xbox 360, I will break down LeBron and Kobe’s ratings at this point in the season. I will also compare their statistics, all-around game and ultimately crown the true king of hoops as of Feb. 4, 2009.

There is a level of preferential treatment that certain universities receive because they bring a ton of revenue to the athletic programs via television. The Bowl Conference Championship Series exemplifies the emphasis on revenue and financial bottom lines.

The BCS system is in existence to guarantee many major conferences and regional sports networks (RSNs) television and media exposure in the multiple bowl games held at the end of the NCAA Division I football season.

The raw power of RSNs and sponsors drive mainstream sports in the U.S., and it is no different with the BCS Series. However, there is a spillover effect here: Institutions are competing to find success in any way they can to land a bowl game. This can challenge the integrity of the game, whether it is due to malpractice in recruiting or giving preferential treatment to football programs over other sports programs within an institution. In the case of the latter, this challenges Title IX sanctions in place to restrict such abuses of funding.

When it comes to developing games -- like many other long-term projects -- there are set timetables and budgets to work with. Companies typically will analyze projects beforehand and attempt to determine the rates of return on their investments when dealing with multimillion-dollar software creations.

Looking at Take-Two Interactive's All-Pro Football 2K8 title from this capital, budgeting and investing point of view, we can begin to understand the company’s thinking from a business standpoint. After a three-year break, 2K football came out of retirement without an NFL license and decided to go head to head with the football giant and phenomenon known as Madden NFL Football.

The first thing I thought when I heard EA Sports would be partnering with Blue Ribbon for the new NCAA Basketball 09 game was: Is this a real news story, or is this a marketing ploy by EA to bring attention to its game? To be fair, I’m sure it was a little bit of both.

It’s suspicious to me how EA announces such a feature/partnership at this time of the year since it could impact the game in tremendous ways as far as strategy is concerned; did EA land this partnership when developers started working on this title approximately 10 months ago when development began or not? Of course, I am perhaps being a bit naiveté to think in those rational terms, because most probably believe this is a full-on marketing tactic by EA that was created to develop hype and gain some publicity on gaming sites. So, I suppose it wouldn’t surprise me either if this feature was in the works many months prior to the recent press release.

Our very own Steven Bartlett has returned from the South Florida Madden Ballers Tournament with some tales of how he performed and how the competition was. Check out his report and thoughts on the tournament in his article Madden Baller Diaries Part Two: Dallas Domination.

Quote:
"It was an impressive showing by the Cowboys offense last Saturday afternoon over at the GameBreakers store, which was hosting the South Florida Madden Ballers tournament. Around 20 local Floridians, some as far as Tampa, came down to pick up the sticks, hoping to pick up six on the Xbox 360. The Atlanta Madden Challenge winner was also present, so I knew this tournament was for real."

Our own Steven Bartlett is going to be playing in some Madden tournaments across the South Florida area and is documenting his preparation and experiences in his own Madden Baller Diaries. Check out his first entry, as frustration sets in.

Quote:
"The Madden Challenge is kicking off this month and so are other local tournaments here in South Florida. Here at the University of Miami, I’ve been practicing to prepare for any tournaments that I may come across, so I recently hopped on Xbox Live and tested my game online. I’m entering a local tournament up in Fort Lauderdale, hosted by the South Florida Madden Ballers on Oct. 18. The winner takes home $500."

The NBA Live series has been around for more than a decade and has seen various highs and lows throughout it's history. Our own Steven Bartlett takes a look at the series in his article The NBA, Video Games and some Hip-Hop: The NBA Live Series.

Quote:
"Look at the EA cover above. The year was 1994 when that game released. Bring back memories? These were the days of Hakeem "The Dream" and the Rockets -- a team that swept my beloved Orlando Magic powered by Shaq and Penny Hardaway. I was just a young one back then, but these were the glory days for the NBA. His Airness, fresh off 3 championships, managed to catapult the NBA to another level throughout the '80s and early '90s. The culture of hip-hop and hoops were slowly becoming intertwined, and flair, style, and grace were represented by a pair of Air Jordans and a swoosh on a shoe. The game of basketball in the United States would never be the same."

Despite the successes of Madden and NCAA Football this season, our very own rookie writing phenomenon Steven Bartlett checks in today to explain that they just aren't enough. In fact, Bartlett argues it is time for a new next-gen football franchise.

Quote:
"It seems like there have been a lot of sports titles on next-gen consoles, but not many have actually lived up to standards of being "next gen" to me. That doesn't seem to make sense does it? The Xbox 360 and PS3 are capable of pumping out extraordinary games; we've seen them in various genres outside the sports world. It’s time we get these games right -- after all, $60 for a piece of software better last a while, right?"
