Skateboarding is hard. Of all the sports you could possibly take up, it may be the hardest to learn, and if you stick with it long enough, it becomes equally hard on the body.

Skateboarding video games, traditionally, have failed to capture just how difficult it is to direct a flying piece of wood through the air and safely plant both feet onto a very small landing area.

OlliOlli is the first game since 1999's Thrasher: Skate and Destroy to accurately depict the difficulty and danger inherent to the sport.

The strongest aspect of NBA 2K14, next to its graphics, is its gameplay. While the jump from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4 may not have improved the series' on-court behavior as significantly as fans were anticipating, few impactful flaws in the gameplay exist in the current product. The brilliant post-up system contains more moves than a bowl of Jell-O. The retooled pick-and-roll mechanic offers so many different possibilities and variable outcomes that you can literally run it every trip down the court and never become bored.

Just when you try to put the gameplay to use in the modes, that's where the wheels have come off...

The latest issue of Famitsu magazine has confirmed that Konami will be releasing Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2014 in Japan on March 20, 2014 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Portable.

A PlayStation 4 version was not mentioned, which is surprising, given that Konami's soccer franchise, Pro Evolution Soccer, will appear on PlayStation 4 this fall.

Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2014 will include twice as many commentary lines as last year's game, plus it has re-recorded many of the game's sound effects by capturing audio directly from Nippon Professional Baseball stadiums.

Famitsu's preview also mentions a new "guess the pitch" feature, which increases the likelihood of a powerful hit if the batter correctly predicts the incoming pitch's location.

Pricing for the three versions was also revealed:

PS3: 7600 yen/$73 (retail), 7100 yen/$68 (digital download)
Vita: 6650 yen/$64 (retail), 6150 yen/$59 (digital download)
PSP: 3790 yen/$36 (retail), 3290 yen/$31 (digital download)

Konami's baseball games have traditionally been region-free, meaning the retail version of Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2014 should play on American consoles without any modifications. Preorders have not yet gone live, but expect import shops like Play-Asia and NCSX to start accepting orders in the coming weeks.

Downloading the digital version of Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2014 will require a Japanese PlayStation Network account.

The last time NBA Live 14's roster was updated, Stephen Jackson had just signed with the Los Angeles Clippers and Rudy Gay had been dealt to the Sacramento Kings in a massive 7-player trade.

Since December 10, almost a dozen different transactions have occurred in the NBA, including Captain Jack's departure from Lob City. None of those moves, unfortunately, are currently reflected in NBA Live 14.

The holidays have ended. So too have the days when families and relatives could sit down and enjoy a sports video game together.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years have, in the Young family, seen sports games like RBI Baseball, NBA Jam and Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey bring just as much excitement to the living room as plates full of turkey, mashed potatoes and dinner rolls.

The current menu of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sports games, disappointingly, contains no title capable of carrying on this tradition. Even in a room full of sports-loving, tech-savvy people, these $400 and $500 entertainment systems currently function best as a Netflix or Blu-Ray player.

Like a backup player filling in for a fallen starter, Electronic Arts' NBA Live 14 had a chance this November to impress gamers and supplant its star teammate, NBA 2K14, while Visual Concepts' game sat on the shelf recovering from self-inflicted injuries.

Of all the PlayStation 4 sports games, NBA 2K14 is the one I have played the most. I have almost exclusively played the new-look My Career mode, where you create an avatar and guide him through the cliché ascent from unknown street baller to NBA champion.

While the premise itself is stale, the mode's presentation is fresh, plus its scope is larger than any previous sports gaming story mode. You'd have to go all the way back to Midway's retired NBA Ballers and Blitz: The League series to find a sports game that put anywhere near as much work into crafting storylines and choreographing cutscenes.

If you read my review of NBA Live 14, then you should have an idea that the game's developers have a mountain of work towering above them. Even the team has acknowledged the game must be fixed, by posting an apology and promise to bring NBA Live to an acceptable level of performance and play.

Now here we are, with a specific checklist of what needs to be improved to make NBA Live 14 worth the $60 that Electronic Arts is asking basketball fans to pay.

Think of the children. Think of the kid who plays for the school basketball team or the weekend Church league.

Think of his parents, or maybe one of his relatives, out at the local shopping mall, stopping by an electronics store and buying that kid NBA Live 14 for Christmas.

Think long and think hard about what you've done, Electronic Arts.

Were the few thousand copies NBA Live 14 will inevitably sell to mom or dad or to aunt Suzy worth the disappointment of a few thousand kids on Christmas Day?

You know the answer. You know what you've done.

And sports gamers will remember. Especially the younger ones.

After spending eight hours playing NBA Live 14, the best thing I can say about my initial experience is that it's mercifully over.

Professional obligation is all that kept me from turning off NBA Live 14 after experiencing EA Sports' buggy, sub-standard rendition of professional basketball.

On the eve of the PlayStation 4's release, Operation Sports is taking a look back at some of the most memorable launch-year sports titles.

Because many players experienced these systems for the first time on Christmas morning, games on this list qualified for selection if they were released in the same year as their respective platform. Only American release dates were considered.

It might not appear old when you watch it on film, but All-Pro Football 2K8, now a six-year veteran, is ancient by sports gaming standards.

On its release day, I drove to a newly renovated Circuit City, filled my gas tank for $2.49 a gallon, unfolded three twenties and a five from my wallet then secured one of the store's twenty shelved copies of All-Pro Football 2K8.

I experienced my first system-crashing “red ring of death” on the opening kickoff of my first All-Pro Football 2K8 game, with Al Del Greco's boot traveling only a few yards downfield before the ball froze mid-flight.

Three XBOX 360s later, and I still find myself firing up All-Pro Football 2K8 once the weather starts to turn cold and the leaves turn from red to dead.

Motorcycle racing games appeared to be running out of fuel in 2008, with Nintendo abandoning its classic Excitebike brand for the disappointing Excite Truck and THQ dumping mediocre MX vs. ATV games onto every capable system.

The outlook was just as muddy on the PC, where the platform's best franchise, Microsoft's Motocross Madness, showed no signs of ending an almost decade-long retirement.

For a time, it looked as if the PlayStation 3's MotorStorm might end up being the only great motorbike series on the current generation of hardware.

It took three attempts from RedLynx, a small development team located in Helsinki, Finland, to finally reverse the diminishing fortunes of motorcycle racers. On August 12, 2009, RedLynx released Trials HD during Xbox Live's second annual Summer of Arcade promotion.
