For the past week, I’ve been playing--and more importantly, enjoying--one of the most unique sports titles on the iOS system. Qvadriga is a chariot-racing sim with a fair amount of management; enough, in fact, for the site PocketTactics to call it “Football Manager for classical Roman chariot teams.”

Last week, we ran an insightful article that highlights some of MLB 14: The Show’s small, but impactful, problems. All of those issues Jayson points out are evident, and can detract from the overall fun.
However, I think MLB 14 on the PS4 is one of my favorite games from the last five years. I’ve probably played more games in The Show this year than any baseball game in the past; only rivaled by MVP 2005.
So, in the interest of balance, here are small, but important additions MLB 14: The Show gets right.

It’s been more than a month since MLB 14: The Show released on PS3, and for many of us, April was agonizingly long month. As a community, we collectively waited for the release of our favorite baseball game on PS4 by analyzing every piece of news and video, playing lots of The Show on PS3, or perhaps just watching real baseball. My short trip to San Francisco to play the new version with the developers was an all too brief tease, as were the gameplay videos and Puig/Pence showdown.
The month is over, however, and those with the interest and ability probably have the next gen version of The Show firmly planted in their PS4s. If you are still looking for info and deciding whether to jump in, read on to see my thoughts on this latest edition of Sony’s hardball title.

The newest edition of the well-reviewed Out of the Park Baseball series has gone live. And, after a week of playing, I can attest, as usual, the latest edition is the best -- even without one of its newest features.
If you haven’t read my initial impressions, that would be a good place to start. If you have, they all still hold true -- in fact, my overall impression of the game has gone up with repeated plays.

Last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend a special preview of MLB 14: The Show on PS4.
Despite the event being deep in the heart of the Sony, it felt anything but corporate. Instead, the morning felt more like hanging out with a bunch of baseball fans, including Ramone Russell, talking sports and video games. We discussed everything from the MLB replay system to NFL 2K5, all while playing the next-gen version of everyone’s favorite baseball game.
In fact, playing is what we did for the majority of the event. My goal was to experience the game as a whole, and not to dig into specific portions of the game. I didn’t visit every stadium (in fact, they weren’t all available in the current build) or dissect individual player models. Only exhibition and head-to-head modes were available. This objective colors the below observations which, again, are rather big picture.

Last Fall, I reviewed Franchise Hockey Manager, a professional hockey text sim from the makers of Out of the Park Baseball. At that time, FHM felt relatively unfinished, despite its pedigree and huge amounts of potential.

Last week, I jokingly commented on MLB 14: The Show's fact sheet, which included the addition of "left-handed infielders." To me, this seemed not only an odd thing to add, but an odd thing to publicize.
If you are unfamiliar with why left-handed infielders are so rare, it has to do with fielding and throwing runners out. Lefties field with their right hand, but need to throw to the left (first base) to get the out. This leads to an awkward transition, bad throws, and extra time for the runner. Think about the throw a right-handed first basemen needs to make on a 3-6-3 double play, or a right-handed quarterback who rolls to the left for similar throws.

Nothing can help end the winter doldrums quite like two things: the phrase "pitchers and catchers report" and information on the latest edition of MLB: The Show.
We got both of those this week, as well as another winter storm here in the Northeast. The disappointing delay of both versions of MLB 14:The Show, along with never-ending snow make it seem as if Spring will never get here.
