Syracuse Orange (1-1, 0-0 Away) | Memphis Tigers (1-1, 0-1 Home)
|
Syracuse looks to bounce back from its rough ACC opener against the Seminoles by heading to Memphis. The Tigers are fresh off an upset of ranked Kansas but that may be a fluke as Kansas doesn't look too good this season. Syracuse should be able to get back on track and pick up win #2 in the Bays era.

Syracuse came into Memphis and dominated both sides of the ball in a comfortable 31-13 win. Syracuse lost their starting QB and HB in the first half but had already built a 24-3 lead so they were not too worried. HB Tyrone Perkins came in and ran for over 100 yards in relief, raising the question of if he should start over the ineffective Moe Neal. Tommy DeVito was on fire before the injury, throwing for nearly 200 yards and 3 scores, in only the first half. The defense absolutely stifled Memphis and forced 3 key turnovers to help the cause. Syracuse is clearly better than their lower conference foes this year, but they need to prove they can hang with ACC competition to be taken seriously.

#18 Florida State Seminoles (0-0, 0-0 Away) | Syracuse Orange (1-0, 1-0 Home)
Florida State enters this matchup ranked number 18 in the nation. They have immensely more talent than Syracuse and the Orange will need a minor miracle to pull off the upset here. Syracuse is playing at home but that shouldn't matter too much in this one. Look for the Seminoles to have no trouble coming away with a win.

This game wasn't even as close as the score suggests. The athletes on Florida State were much better than ours. RB Cam Akers ran for 100 yards, had 100 receiving yards, and scored 5 times. QB James Blackman threw for nearly 400 yards and 4 scores. RB Moe Neal was hurt on the opening drive of the game and did not play again. Not that it mattered much because the Orange were playing from behind all day and did not run it much anyways. Riley Neal scored for the second straight game and Tommy DeVito played a pretty good game once again. This program still has a long way to go before it can even think about competing in the ACC. Florida State are far from the best team in the nation but we aren't even close to measuring up to them yet. The difference has to be made in recruiting as currently, none of the top athletes in the nation want to attend Syracuse University for football, instead choosing traditional blue bloods like Alabama and Michigan.

UAB Blazers (0-0, 0-0 Away) | Syracuse Orange (0-0, 0-0 Home)
Coach Bays opens this new chapter of his career at Syracuse with a home game against UAB. UAB are one of the better teams in the Sun Belt but should still be beatable for an ACC team like Syracuse. We don't really know much anything about this team other than that they look worse on paper than Georgia State did so the challenge is on. Look for a ugly win for the Orange.

This game was a close fought battle for most of the way before Syracuse finally managed to get a two score cushion late in the fourth quarter. UAB actually led going into halftime 17-14 because of poor clock management by the Orange costing them a field goal chance. Syracuse shut down UAB for the most part although their QB did have an efficient day passing. SO QB Tommy DeVito threw for nearly 300 yards and 3 scores and ran for 80 more, showing he can be the leader of this offense. WR Sean Riley had a big day, nearly racking up 100 receiving yards and also scoring. The defense allowed some big plays but were solid and stepped up when it really counted with a big interception to set up the game-sealing score. Syracuse looks competent but will definitely start to struggle when they are no longer playing Sun Belt competition.

This bowl game is much less glamourous than the one that the Panthers somehow made it into last year. Georgia State will face a very average Marshall team in the New Orleans Bowl. Oh boy. That Georgia State pass rush turned it up a notch for bowl season. They combined to total 13 sacks including a school record 5 for Walter Anderson and 3 from SR DE Marterious Allen. On offense Taz Bateman rushed for 100 yards and 2 scores and had 80 more receiving yards and an additional score. Winchester scored 4 times total and was nearly perfect through the air on the day, connected with Jonathan Ifedi for 2 TD's. Georgia State moves to 11-2 on the season for a second straight year and are looking forward to playing in the MAC next season.
